I've started Thief numerous times but have always come to a deadend in some catacombs when zombies start popping up. I always find that section jarring and it completely kills the atmosphere for me.

try Thief 2, some missions force you to ghost and stuff can get you one hit killed, there's also usually less of a focus on exploration looking for shit and "puzzles"

Why would that level be harder to run through? Unless you mean exclusively running around

as mentioned before, some endgame enemies can actually chase you, and they're p. dangerous

I'm pretty sure it has parts which you simply cannot run past. Also, it's pretty easy to get lost if you're not paying attention, and the amount of backtracking required really lends itself to playing properly.

I just started playing Thief for the first time yesterday. Got the full game after playing the demo.

The demo was better than most games I've played in recent memory.

    So....no.

On an unrelated note, why do developers insist on having so many in-engine custscenes nowadays? Why not have infinitely better looking and atmospheric Thief-like cutscenes? Or Max Payne style comic book narration?

In-engine cutscenes are the worst of both worlds. They're supposed to be immersive, but all they do is tell the player "Hey, this looks the same as it did before - except you can't do anything!". If you're going to break the flow of the game with cutscenes, might as well make them original and stylish.

I don't bother looking at trailers for games anymore. You're lucky if you get a few frames of actual gameplay footage among all the majestic cinematic cutscenes.

You guys do know that being overrated doesn't mean the game isn't good, right? It means people say it's better than it is. The rage in this thread directed at a simple "i dun like it, lol" supports that.

Codex stop hitting yourself why are you hitting yourself

Then how can one overrate Thief?

For instance, people overrate Half-Life all the time, with shit like "unprecedented AI!", "amazing level design!" or whatever.

But I've yet to see anyone make claims for Thief bigger than the game itself.

Thief can do in-engine cutscenes, as several fan missions have demonstrated. Problem is, the Dark Engine is probably the WORST engine to do them in. At best they make me cringe, at worst they make me lose all interest in playing the mission. System Shock 2 has a few of them, but they're fortunately not very long. The worst kinds are the "cam-vator" cutscenes, where you're being railroaded VERY SLOWLY along a set path, but are allowed to look around freely. Except that due to a bug, if you jump, you die. :-/

    No. Fuck you.

Funny but I'm playing Thief Gold now and have just experienced the awesomeness of that area yet again. One of my all time favorite missions in any game this one.

Oh and Expert is the only mode to play indeed. At the very least why cut yourself off from content, never mind the fact that you have to play sneaky? Playing Normal is only if you want to go on a bloodthirsty rampage.

I was thinking "yes" when I saw this thread first appear, because I got Thief years ago as a kid and just couldn't get into it. But seeing the responses and reading the praise for Thief's level design in the exceptional game levels thread made me finally reinstall and give it another chance.

What a fucking great game :love:I am sorry that I nearly sinned, Codex.

Is Thief over-rated? By its fans, maybe a little. In general? No, and honestly it's not given enough praise.

Playing Thief 2 now. I was looking forward to the focus on breaking-and-entering style missions - I enjoyed Bonehoard in the first one, but though the variety was good, I found the undead/mystical levels to be generally weaker and not as conducive to the style of the game - but the first couple of missions weren't great, the Expert objectives felt more like chores than the fun ones in T1. Hope it gets better.

edit: just played the police station, nvm

    Well..

Option 1 - Instead of running away you run into guards and suddenly cool slo-mo camera (+bloom filter) rotates 5000 degrees and you are told to press WASD to dodge their attacks and escape the mansions as the world around you crumbles to dust. Also when you are almost at the exit a dragon breaks through the cieling and shats out gold coins which results in secret bonus stage.

Option 2 - Mass Effect like dialogue wheel pops up. You flirt and depending on the type of costume Garret is wearing (more available on preorders and through DLC) you just might successfully bend over and escape the moment guards are done with you.

    Option 3
