Ivan : unable to complete first dungeon (underground tunnel)

Greetings, I've been hooked on an interesting roguelike (with full limb severing, heh) called Ivan (http://ivan.sourceforge.net/) but I can't get manage to get past the first underground tunnel dungeon.

If anyone's played this and has any recommendations, I'd appreciate it. It seems like this game has a fair number of dungeons in addition to this, so I'd love to see them at some point without having to cheat.

My dog also usually dies within the first three monster encounters. Poor puppy.
