It's laser rifle from original X-com.

Wait, is that screenshot from the original X-Com, unmodded? I seem to remember being able to build laser rifles before you even knew what Elerium-115 was - hell, potentially before your first mission.
I was wondering the same thing.
And yes all laser weapons can be researched without any captured alien materials.

edit.
That picture is from some mod.
Here's what it looks like on vanilla.

Damn, i've just realized that when i look at Ufo defense screenshots i have the exact same melancholic feelings as when i look at my ex-gf pictures. It means they both gave me emotions that will never come back. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing.

The difference between XCOM's tactics and JA2's... incomparable.

And the visuals, too. I don't like the cartoon style that old games such as XCOM, Syndicate, Dark Sun and Cannon Fodder employed. Hired Guns and Liberation (Captive II) were much cooler for the time.

Xcom was more cartoony but at least you didn't fight in the same Africa style environment all game. Every map has a different vibe.

Also, at the time the videogames graphics was pretty primitive due to technology, in that case cartoon style was easier to do with better result. You can't go realistic with 1993 tech and graphic fidelity.

PS: Silent Storm is cartoony too.

Landscape consistency is important in a contiguous 256 sector map of a country.

That said, JA2 has quite a bit of variety in its sectors:

And that doesn't show the subterranean stuff either.

Yes, you can. There are plenty of games that managed non-cartoony visuals around 1993. I even gave you two RPGs.

Problem was, devs thought every RPG had to look like Lemmings.

PS: Silent Storm is cartoony too.

I mean in terms of cuteness. I should have been clearer on that point.

Now, please be careful what you say next. If you attempt to annoy me again with your bullshit, and don't budge an inch, you'll go in the iggy bin with the rest of them.

Wow so much difference. All i see is brown and brownish green lands. If you wanted to show an example of terrain diversity, you failed hard i am afraid.

Now i wonder how a 7 years old little girl managed to play videogames or even exists back in the 90's.

Welcome to the iggy bin. octavius was right. It might seem petty to put someone on ignore, but at the end of the day it's highly effective (especially when alerts are disabled as well).

It's a damn shame such a game engine was never expanded on for winter combat. Can you just imagine trying not to freeze while trying impossibly to shoot at red shirts beyond your pistol range?

Yep, expecially when the prequel had different biomes. Also, that jungle\savanah (or whatever it is) setting is absolutely boring. But don't get me wrong, i consider Ja2 the best turn based ever made after Xcom. Too bad the franchise ended this way

My family had its first PC when I was either 7 or 8 back in '92.

I never played it btw, worth it?

The Roguey review: https://rpgcodex.net/forums/index.p...e-grognards-thread.94135/page-38#post-3752534

It's a linear combat-crawl JA2 minus the strategy layer (a plus for me, minus for others). If you start it, be sure to take at least one or even two high priced mercs with a long range rifle, otherwise the beginning will be like smashing your head into a wall.

Maybe time to give JA2 another try. I remember enjoying the game when I bought it a while back but never played it again after being exposed to the Drassen counterattack.

EDIT: I remember using this guide to set up the game the first time around: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za9ZxUor66o, but I think I will use this one instead: https://lilura1.blogspot.com/2017/04/Jagged-Alliance-2-Retrospective-Walkthrough-Part-I.html
I'm not clicking your links because laziness, but make sure to 1.13 for maximum tactical inventory porn.

Because clicking a link is a marathon. Anyway, I would say be careful what inventory components you add. For some, it can make the game unecessarily tedious and complex.

7.62 High Calibre and Brigade E5 ?
End State maybe. All I know is that it looked like it was headed in the right direction when I found it and it was made by a lone Finn (obviously he was alone).

oh, you're asking me because I rated your post
rating_citation.png
, amirite?
I gave you that rating because I had no idea what game you're talking about, tbh ...

edit: and now I realize you weren't asking at all, but stating that you don't know the game's name. :D
