I really rate this game. So far I'm having more 'fun' with it than I did Deus Ex. The story isn't that interesting (so far, I've blown up some artillery and a big generator room, and found an Inquisitor, with no real exposition or analysis of what is going on. Just the old 'Orks attacking planet for technology' thing), but the gameplay is spot on. You can just smash shit up. I'm playing it on hard so it isn't tedious, if you do something stupid like run right into a pack of orks they will cut you down. I like how the game encourages you to try different approaches... albeit limited to ranged, melee and grenades.

The graphics aren't OMGAWESOMECRYSIS level but the art design is excellent. They really got the 40k feel, but I'm not surprised: it was made by Relic after all.

Really? I always thought that if any 40k race was emo, it was the Eldar. Chaos seem to be the most relaxed of them all, they're all about doing whatever the fuck you want (as long as you worship Chaos, of course), while the Imperium is fundamentalist totalitarian.

I'm nearing the end in part V, and I've enjoyed it for the most part. Granted I don't play a whole lot of third-person shooters, or shooters in general, but the weakest part of the game to me is the story but that doesn't matter so FUK YEAH SPEHS MAREENS! I took the advice in this thread about playing it on hard first and I can see I wouldn't have liked the game as much if I played on normal. Just enough difficulty where I can duck behind some omnipresent crates and let my shield regenerate to give me a fighting chance, but I can't stay there too long or rockets/grenades will rape me.

I'm nearing to the last third of the game, and while it started great, and has that WH40K feel, I think it gets pretty monotone and boring after a while. The game is very linear (literary a corridor shooter), with scripted battles after every 100 m. And thats all. There are only a few jetpack sections, which is petty, I liked those. Thank God there is no cover mechanic, so that is a plus. The WH40K theme makes the game fun, but only in small bursts.

So is it buy for pc, buy for xbawkz, don't remove from inventory, don't play at all or wait for bargain bin?

I've enjoyed several popamole shooters in the past that were good for what they were. Demo left me undecided. Mouse+keyboard felt very awkward, but that could probably be solved with rebinding the keys.

If you're only interested in the single player campaign then wait.

    I'm still liking multiplayer, though.

I'm playing on hard. If there's a massive pack of orks running at me, I pop some off with headshots, toss a grenade in, wait for it to go off and then charge right in. But you can't kill them all with melee.

Eh, bit of a letdown. Probably the best part about DoW was the voiceacting with its buttload of memorable one-liners. So far there's nothing of the sort in here. Instead the commander delivers gay lines like "there are benefits to thinking for yourself!" What the hell? Is that like an Ultramarines thing? DoW was all Blood Ravens iirc.

Relic invented the Blood Ravens because they wanted a chapter they could mess around with. I really don't know why they chose the Ultramarines for this new game, the plot isn't Utramarines-related (no Tyranids), but I guess they wanted to appeal to people who might not have played Dawn of War but recognised the blue armour.

Just wondering if Ultramarines lore calls for them to be all bland and gay or if Relic is running out of steam on the IP.

Without the campy VA to carry it there's really no point in sitting through hours of mashing RMB.

    Haha.

    No.

They do the same thing in the Black Library novels in order to make SMs "relatable". Pretty much the entire character arc of the squad is lifted from the Ultramarines books. I always imagined aspects of the Soul Hunter series to hew closer to "real" spess mehrines.

I'm not a WH40K geek, but the Ultramarines really sound like pussies compared to the Blood Ravens. In Dawn of War, I loved their arrogant attitude. And when I first heard the Ultramarines in Space Marine, being nice and respectful, I was like Whaaaaat?

Do any 40k fans actually like the Ultramarines? Or is it just Games Workshop being delusional and/or mainly using Ultramarines to attract newcomers unfamiliar with 40k.
