Is that legal, though? I know they're not gathering money for the mod itself, only to fund it's development, but will that shit fly with EA? Especially considering these guys want money for what many others do for free.

It would be legally dicey to ask money for the mod itself (i.e. selling the mod), but asking money for living expenses so that they can work on developing the mod shouldn't be a problem. The difference between doing it for free and asking for money to cover your living expenses is that if you have the money, you will be able to focus on developing the mod and, as a result, it will be developed faster. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

As one KS project is starting with a whimper (Thorvalla), another one is ending with a massive bang. Star Citizen's KS project ended with $2,134,314 from 34,396 backers. The kicker is that on the game's website (which is down again), the game got another $4,000,000+ from another 45,000+ backers. We'll have the final numbers when http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/ comes back online, but we're looking at the most crowd-funded video game up to date, way over P:E.

Check this out. It's a pretty impressive looking sandbox space game containing RTS and RPG elements, and what's even more impressive is it's made by one 20-year old guy.

(edit: meant to say 'containing', not 'combining')

Damn. Hope the game's half as impressive as his campaign (it won't be)

First video I've seen where seeing the author talk doesn't piss me off. Will probably pledge.

Guy seems like a bro, instead of the usual holier-than-thou indie retards... I'm not a fan of procedural generated things, they never give that memmorable feeling that great hand-designed things have, but was a smart way for this guy to get his game going.

Regarding 8 bit Funding, it seems that it's no longer being updated and there's a box that opens up that asks you if you want to go to the Indie Gamestand site instead. In short, 8 bit Funding be dead.

Another space sim. So much for the "dead" genre :) http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/maksw/dominion-episode-1?ref=category . This one confirmed to be utter shit however
Also features the idea of crowd-development. People send them art and they put it into the game somewhere. So, live long and Prosper.

I had another look at this. I dunno. He'll make the money and all, and I'm sure the thing will be splendid technologically, but... I just can't bring myself to believe that he'll actually make a good game out of this, that's just too fucken much for one person, I wish it was possible but...anyway, best of luck to him, the pitch is very solid (hey Guido) and he deserves the cash.

Was anybody wondering about how it would be for Peter Molyneaux to do a KS pitch? Here he is: Project GODUS - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/22cans/project-godus - "GODUS is a delightful reinvention of the god game from 22cans and Peter Molyneux, who created the genre." - funding goal: £450,000 ($720,000)

This is going to generate some MAJESTIC bitching, butthurt and fanboy circlejerking. Bring it on Pete!
