[ Interview ]

StrategyCore has the final segment in their lengthy Sword of the Stars interview from this year's E3. It was going to be much longer, but terrorists destroyed some of their computer hardware with the interview recording on it. While the Department of Homeland Security is investigating, read up on Kerberos Productions' bloodthirsty attitude towards victory conditions.

SC: What is winning? Killing everyone else?
MC: Or your alliance is killing everyone else. And basically we saw that has the other false thing that's been growing in 4X games. It's this fantasy about other kinds of victory conditions. Their sophistry is based on ignoring military power. Diplomatic victory! What's diplomatic victory? Diplomatic victory is everybody is either on your side or dead. That's a diplomatic victory. The only reason why people join your side isn't because you're a swell guy, it's because they better or else. Because we've seen that the ending of the Cold War has given games this strange fantasy about victory conditions. For instance, did we beat the Warsaw Pact because of a cultural victory? Possibly. Everybody wanted blue jeans instead of crappy pants made out of borscht and bad shoes made in Bulgaria. The fact that the culture was backed up by an absurd amount of military power had something to do with it. In history, they're been lots of moments where one side says "Okay, we're pretty much done.". But they're pretty much done because if they could fight, they would. You achieve cultural victory because the guy is like "I'd like to come over and take all your stuff, but I can't. So I'll just do what you do.". These artificial victory conditions all seemed to put the cart before the horse. So there is Allied victory. Your side beat the other side. There are nonaggression pacts, that sort of thing.

Read: SotS Interview Part 3

Wow. Now that sounds like the most stupid interview of the day ! Inventing a bunch of crap to back up the weak decisions of a development team. Nice one.

Cultural victory isn't all that bad, you're basically dominating everyone else by building a superior country. When you have a superior country full of wonderful things, people like to invade you - so you need some dudes to protect your shit.

But you won't have very good protection if you're still having stone throwers guard your diamond encrusted towers. So you have to keep up on military technology too, while exploring your cultural techs.

To be honest, it sounds like they tried to do these victories in other 4X games and got their asses kicked D:

I hope their dislike of a Diplomatic victory doesnt harm the Diplomatic sides of things, as those are my favorite civs to play. Using a Silver Tounge to procure riches and techology to fund my future plans of domination.

Lame. Cultural victory isn't just "omg ur country is so awesome we give up" it's the ideas of your country spreading to the peoples of the other nations, who take them up and overthrow the current government etc. Kind of like the whole communist thing in South America. This game is from the developers of Homeworld so the focus on wars and shit is to be expected. Still, I play 4x games (<3 Dominions) because of the wealth of options they provide and a completely combat focused 4x game would get old fast, relatively.
