Now's your chance to find out if Larry Bond's Harpoon – Commander’s Edition is half as confusing as it looks.

The US Naval Institute, a forum for independent thought since 1873, Advanced Gaming System, award winning developer of the computer Harpoon series, and Matrix Games/Slitherine, the largest independent war and strategy game publisher, are pleased to announce a special demo version of AGSI's Harpoon - Commander's Edition designed for those who are interested in modern air/naval wargaming but haven't had an opportunity to try their hand.

This demo version features five scenarios highlighting the US actions in Libya in 1986, Attain Document III and El Dorado Canyon. This special bundle also includes a special quick start guide and two YouTube videos showing how to install the game and a quick walk through of the scenarios.

The special demo version is only available from this joint USNI-AGSI page.

Confused. Isn't there a Harpoon 3? Usually wargames sort of evolve and get better, so I don't think I'd bother playing the first one. I've considered getting into these before. What am I missing?

The first one is the only one that's any good or rather the only one that's any fun. The others were attempts to reinvent the thing and instead made it shittier, more complicated and rather than playing a game, you're sweating at a tedious simulator. I know there's a fine line when you consider complex games like this, but Harpoon II and III just aren't very interesting. Most of the re-releases over the last years have been based on the original Harpoon, with updated navy lists and scenarios and interface changes to make it fit for Windows and with better databases. Harpoon Commanders edition is actually the latest version of Harpoon 3.

I'd get Harpoon Classic 97 if you want somewhere to start. It's easier to get into and is simpler than the newer games. I hate the interface of Harpoon II or III. It looks like shit(and that's saying something when you see Harpoon Classics graphics and interface)and is a bitch to navigate easily. Of course maybe I'm just biased since I've been a Harpoon man since 1990 and have logged enormous amounts of time on the original and the windows updates.

If you don't like the basics in Harpoon Classic then no way you'd like the added complexity(anal tedium?) of Harpoon 3 anyway.

I wish Sonalysts had continued with the Fleet Command line. That had a lot of potential as a Harpoon killer with a good interface, nice graphics etc. but they instead focused on the sub sim element.

Yeah, some of the Harpoon versions are quite bad.

However, this one is good. Unfortunately the scenarios are very, very small - but this is a great game to chew on while you wait for Red Pill to arrive.

Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations is aiming high in this niche. I think folks will like it a lot.
