So the latest Mass Effect book, Deception, has come out and it's so bad that even the most fanatic of Bioware fans are up in arms about it.

A list of errors and shittiness updated by people reading it:

A video by a Bio-fan who decided to burn the book out of protest. Might want to leave the commentary blurbs on for this one, really adds to it.

Well to the writer's excuse, it is quite hard to remember all ins and outs of such a diverse and massive setting - the amount and the complexity of lore is simply overwhelming.

From that list of errors, book seems more like a troll attempt.

Is there a more pathetic form of life than the Bioware fan? Holy fuck, yeah let's get all upset about a shitty little 4th grade sci-fi pulp book that contradicts the lore of a some subpar video-game nobody in their right mind should give a damn about.

It's just sad what kind of pathetic excuses for human beings our modern society, the internet and marketing have created. Watching stuff like the video that was posted obove gives me the fucking creeps.

On the one hand yeah, this. However, on the other hand, you have a company that hires a commercial writer to write a story based on setting/characters/events created by the effort of the company. What does the guy do? Gets even the most basic facts wrong. I flipped through that list, and even I know a bunch of shit from there, simply from my unfortunate exposure to ME1. Anyone that's played TWO games and maybe read three "codex" entries would be able to easily write up a list like that.

So, while in general, that's disturbing and pathetic, I find it good that even the sheep occasionally demand quality shears.

These are not facts. These are mere details of a fictional world. And when you change your mind about a fictional world, you change the details of a fictional world.

I myself consider Elder Scrolls lore an interesting curiosity, but you won't see me raging about Mannimarco, King of Worms, from Oblivion. It doesn't matter.

What if I call Frodo an elf? Or maybe Harry Potter is about Martians inventing Kama Sutra?
A fictional setting fact is still a fact - in its own context. If you approach it with an attitude of "Eh, it's made up, everything goes", you get shittons of schlock fanfic-level excrements published by major publishers and consumed by crowds of retards meanwhile the critics praise it to high heavens.

    Sound familiar?

Frankly, I have seen worse than " Harry Potter is about Martians inventing Kama Sutra?"

Apparently, in the later Dune books, it was a bit jarring to see Jews and a Jewish conspiracy enter the supra-future fantasy setting out of nowhere. Still, if there was anything wrong with the quality of later Frank Herbert Dune books, the Jews were not one of them. It's always the style and development of the plot, and not the fact that they retconned Jews out of nowhere.

    (Is retconned the right word?)

Yeah, of course, the importance shouldn't be so much on the what rather, on the how. Unfortunately, I gather that the how is so bland in that latest book that it's not even worth raging over. I mean, if I had a series I liked, and suddenly a new book came out with an excellent story but with a bunch of "facts" being presented as "wrong", I'd ignore that and just enjoy the story. Unsurprisingly, this new book doesn't have such a saving grace, which means that it can be torn apart even by the most clueless of sheep. Says a lot of things about it.

And yeah, retcon is the right word. But in this case it's not retconning, it's just author doing a rush job and possibly being lazy to check the "facts" beyond skimming the first line of each entry. Not that I can blame him.

I laughed. And then when I read "This is my 5th time trying to burn it.", I felt sadness and pity for the poor lost soul, so proficient in the esoteric discipline of ME lore, and yet unable to comprehend the intricacies of kerosene.

No, seriously, I honestly feel bad for that person. How sad is it to make a whole drawn-out video recounting the failures of a book, leading up to the cathartic act of burning it (and with The Roof is on Fire in the background), only to fail at properly igniting a bunch of paper in the end. I'm going to like that video just so the author feels a bit better about himself.

Broken lore: when I open fire with a rifle and only shoot a Krogan in one foot the entire time he still dies.

The fact there is one person in the world, just one person, willing to buy something like this speaks volumes. Decline of the west indeed.
