Less Diversity

I like more diversity in races. Elder Scrolls is cool in that 10 different races are all living together, trying to make shit work. Of course you have your slaves and racism, but it comes with the territory. It's just cooler to have more fantasy races than it is to have just dumb humans or some single sect of humans or whatever. Diversity is fun. And yes I am a commie.

Yeah, diversity is bullshit. I feel like less and less games are being made for me. I mean, I can only play a gruff speaking white guy in The Witchers, Metal Gears, Splinter Cells, Duke Nukems, Gears of Wars, Nioh, Uncharted, Assasins Creeds, Red Dead Redemptions, Grand Theft Autos. Having choices is ok I guess but only as long as gruff speaking white guys get decent stats otherwise what the fuck am I supposed to play!?

Yes and I found the Orlanthi to be far more detailed, interesting and diverse than the thinly sketched fantastic species who surrounded them, from a grim, tattooed Humakti Warrior to a laughing, crazily clad and outrageous follower of Eurmal or a lusty Orlanth man, they were all massively different in approach, attitude and appearance.

I want that level of detail and difference rather than the usual boring archetypes of stuck up Elves.

 

I agree fantasy and sci-fi games should probably focus on a few well done races, rather than spread themselves too thin. You can always drop hints and rumors about other races further away, setting them up to be explored in future games. Elder Scrolls has been cock-teasing the Akavir races forever, who knows if we'll ever actually see them, but that adds a cool sense of mystery to the lore. The Mass Effect sequels introduced more races to have something new I guess, but when you think Mass Effect you still think of the core 4 aliens they spent a lot of time developing.

 

And in the vast majority of cases, this isn't done, so, in those cases (aka, almost all) there's no reason to make them non-human in the first place.

It would be nice to see some high effort new races in a game, instead of just short human, human with pointy ears, human with wings and human with a weird head. Some non humanoid races with alternative societal structures could make for an interesting development in games.

Or instead of throwing your hands in the air you just encourage the devs to do a better job with the ones they already have.

What you're saying amounts to "welp someone removed this really good thing from this game I like, they might as well take everything else out too" instead of asking for them to do it right the first time around.

 

The biggest city in Skyrim had to relocate the Argonians to the docks because the Dunmer refugees wouldn't stop being racist towards them.
Hilariously, it was interpreted as the Nords being racist when it's obvious they were protecting the Argonians and valued their contributions.

Your post does not make any sense. It also does not explain the benefits of slapping pointy ears or green skin on a human and calling it another race.

 

There are some practical implications here, as well.
The more outlandish and weird a different race is, the harder it is to identify with them for most people.
The more un-human another race looks, the more resources it takes. New base-models that cannot be shared, animations that cannot be shared, etc. Why do you think most other races, in any visual media, are humanoid?
So A) It's easier to relate to for the viewer/player. B) It's simply cheaper to make.
Those are benefits one simply cannot ignore.

 

You're having a debate with yourself if you think that's what I'm discussing. I'm arguing for ambition in worldbuilding - make the races more different to humans than they are now. Not whatever point eared crap you're talking about.

 

I think there's truth to this but it's probably overstated. Yeah it's true there are resource considerations but if you're planning this stuff from the start you can do it with very little increase in resources. I think even the average player has a really positive reaction to diverse and interesting cultures in games, to the point where if you succeed at it, it becomes a strong talking point in reviews.
