Sounds very interesting, I'll have to look it up. I remember watching many episodes of the Rose of Versailles on tv (and in French) but never the whole serie. I still have Death Note to watch first, it's sitting on my hard disk but I haven't touched it yet, heard it was good but I'll see for myself.

Not anime related but on the same subject: if you like French history, the mini-serie Les Rois Maudits (The Accursed Kings) is highly recommended. It dates back from 1972, consist of six episodes of roughly 100 minutes each, and is basically theatre on film. It's a bit unusual, but the script is very good, with many display of wit, and the actors excellents. If possible, it's best to watch it in French with subtitles of your prefered language. It was remade in 2005 but the charm was lost in translation, plus the actors of this version are more famous than talented. As for the story, it follows the succession intrigues of the French court from the death of Philippe le Bel, soon after he had the head of the Knights Templar executed, to the start of the Hundred Years' War.

I'm not sure it'll make you too popular with, say, Kaiserin.

I was a big fan when I was 12, and would find myself promptly changing the channel when a family member entered the room.

Hello again and welcome to this update of my amazing Let's Play Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Another Story. I hope you're all feeling comfy, because it'll be one hell of a ride; myself I'm drinking earl gray from my special ferret mug. Yup, I got a mug with pictures of my ferret on it, how awesome is that? I received it as a present last Christmas, so now when she's sleeping I can see my little sweetie whenever I drink tea. Anyway. In the last chapter, love and romance were in the air, but I'm afraid that in this update the game is about to get a lot darker and mature. Usagi received a call from Sailor Uranus, asking her to come at once to the hospital to check on the young Hotaru, who suddenly fell ill. Could her affliction be linked to the disturbing reappearance of ancient enemies that plague the town or is it yet another plot device to get us to move to another place?

After hanging the phone up and checking with Jupiter and Venus, we pass through the bedroom. How silly is it to place a bedroom right at the entrance of a building? Sailor Mercury is still tending to Urawa, a character who appeared in only two episodes of the anime and that the only use so far was to give yet another cryptic warning about Destiny being changed. Time will tell if he will get a bigger role or merely serve as plot revelations dispenser.

Destiny changing... I wonder what in the world is beginning to happen...

We do not need to take the bus and go back to the train station, however I wonder where exactly the bus goes, seeing that this side of the road ends up with a wall... Remember that this game came out in 1995 and at that time game developpers did not yet invent the technology known as Suspension of Disbelief. You probably played a few games featuring the SoD system, it helped you to not facepalm yourself when you discovered that Kvatch was still burning and Martin was still waiting for you there, four months after you were told to reach the town with the utmost urgency. But this is an old-gen game so bear with me please.

Back to the town area, let's see what's new and if some of the stores are now opened.

Cool, the toy store is at last open! And we even got a creepy salaryman in there! Yet, he makes me wonder if the Sailor Senshi receive royalties from the sales of the dolls in their likeness.

Speaking of sales, here's the inventory from the shopkeeper. We can have video games as healing items, now that's pretty cool. I do not know how they have to use it on the battlefield though: do they need to eat it or insert it in some body cavity? Would that really heal or put the user out of her misery?

Outside, we find this guy, it seems he can help us find our way if we are confused about where to go. Nifty. I have to say I find negative questions to be confusing though.

Well, that's very helpful if a little creepy that this guy would know the events revolving around a group of schoolgirls. Now, I wonder exactly what'll happen if I tell him I went to the hospital yet. He'll probably tell me I'm lying and need to go there. I'm sure the devs did not have this guy tell you all the steps to take in this chapter.

So now we know that after the hospital we have to check Usagi's house, the Shrine and then the school. We do not know yet why but that's beside the point.

Looks like everyone got their priorities sorted.

They still sell the same stuff here. Of special note is the Pork Chop that is said to "fix all your accidents". Now what is that supposed to mean exactly? And what kind of accident? A general type or a girlish type of accident? On second thought, I'm not sure I wanna know...

The jewelry store feels a lot more alive now that all monsters in it have been exterminated.

And here is what we can buy, some generic accessories. Nice but since we do not have a lot of money, we'll skip. Plus I'm not gay so I'm not gonna buy some girlish stuff like that!

The Cologne is a pretty important kind of item for later as it restores EP in combat to the maximum value (12). It also makes my Senshi smell like an adult.

The bookstore, I wonder if I'll find that grumpy old man from The Neverending Story. I like that movie, the title song is nice too: "Turn around, look at what you seeeeeeeeeee. In her face, the mirror of your dreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeams. Make believe I'm everywhere, Hidden in the lines, Written on the pages is the answer to a, Neverending stoooooooryyyyyyyy!" And the guy who sung it is cooler than you:

This is, I believe, shows what was really wrong with the 80's. Forget the drugs, forget the Iran-Iraq war, forget Nancy Reagan.

Curative comic books! This again raises the question of how, and maybe where, they should be applied.

We are now introduced to my favourite Senshi: Hotaru Tomoe, alias Sailor Saturn. Her father is a bit of a mad scientist and Hotaru died as a kid in an accident that occured after Pr. Tomoe opened some kind of portal. He accepted a bargain with a Daimon from the other side of the portal: he would become a host for the creature and Hotaru would be returned to life. In fact, Hotaru became host for an evil entity called Mistress 9 . She later became friends with Chibi-Usa, lots of fighting happened, Mistress 9 tried to summon the evil Pharaoh 90 but was defeated and Hotaru was revealed as Sailor Saturn, the Sailor of Destruction who reigns over life and death and has the power to destroy the world. She died but was rebirth as a baby and adopted by Sailor Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. She would regularly age very fast when her powers would be needed and it seems that it's exactly what happened here. She holds up to her title of Sailor of Destruction as she is probably the most powerful character of this game. She's also the only Senshi to have a weapon, the Silence Glaive.

What could have happened?

She just started stumbling.

She transformed back right in front of our eyes. Yeah...but it was so painful... And the Mugen Gakuen has been revived recently too. I think something evil has begun happening. Yeah! Hotaru, have you ever felt this kind of pain before?

Mugen Gakuen is the Infinity Academy. In other parts of the game they refer to the place with the English name, either for hygiene reasons or to add more confusion. This whole story arc deals with Pr. Tomoe, Mistress 9 and the Outer Senshi.

It was like when I was under the influence of the Taioron Crystal. Usagi-san's Ginzuichou seemed to help relieve the pain.

The Taioron Crystal... T...then, Hotaru-chan, are you going to turn back into Mistress 9?

I think it's okay now.

Yeah, Hotaru has opened her eyes and is a Sailor Senshi now. She won't turn into an enemy.

When I collapsed, I felt that I was envelopped by darkness. But that evil power... That evil power is an enormous power of darkness... I felt like my Destiny was being influenced by something else.

We got a new team with us, time to check them out and change a few things:

For now we'll use the cluster formation. As said previously, it's a very aggresive formation but potentially dangerous if we cross a very damaging enemy and the group has low defense. People in the back will deal a little less damage than normal but still good enough to be useful while getting a bit of defense, while those in front, and especially the one in the center position, will deal a lot of damage. Hotaru, being very weak for now, goes to the back and Sailor Moon, who has the highest defense, take the central position.

More info about our allies. Looks like we missed a few birthdays last month.

The town now becomes a danger zone and walking around means we'll get stopped and put into combat with random monsters, in a typical and annoying JRPG manner. And in the same, we have to run around a bit to grind some experience and become more powerful else we can get advance the story and meet some boss to powerful for us to deal with.

This update is dedicated to the loving memory of Annie Carlson. She will be remembered as one of the few women to have survived, and even enjoyed, the onslaughts of the Codex and its multi-headed dicks pets. The circumstances of her death are well-known: while in a bookstore last month, she tried to lift a huge rad heavy hard-cover mega full integral edition of The Adventures of Tintin from a shelf and, as she slipped, the dangerous rectangular object of Belgian and equally dubious origins fell on her head, ending her life too soon, for our great sorrow. Following her will, her body was lyophilized and the remains kept in a sealed package; this way she will be able to wait for the time when technology will allow her resurection. One will only need to open the package, add a bit of water and enjoy the results.

Chapter 5 - The School of Despair! Twisted Dreams! Lots of Bad Interminable Dialogs!

It took some times but here it is! I unfortunately got some work to do, was tired and needed to rest and other bad excuses you're likely not interested to hear. But this thread won't die just now, have no worries about that, dear readers!

As we left Sailor Moon and her team last time, she received a strange message from Sin via Wikipedia from the future. Don't look at me like this, I kid you not, this is Sailor Moon after all. Sin, between two taunts, revealed that the four Inner Senshi and Chibi-Usa had been taken prisonners and actually detained in the Juuban High School. Knowing full well it was a trap, even as the other Sailors warned her, she still stupidly decided to go right ahead. This is obviously a failure of monarchy: just because you are the king, queen, prince or princess does not mean you are intelligent, it simply means you were born from the previous king, queen, prince or princess.

My party is now outside the Shrine, a few screens away from the School and only a few random groups of weak and generic monsters stand in my way. But I just remembered to do something I haven't done yet...

That's right, kids, the Link Menu! Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Another Story (or BSSM:AS for short) has a system similar to Chrono Trigger where two or even three characters can combine their powers to do a more powerful attack. Or, in the case of this current game, that's the theory as we'll soon see. One of the main difference between Chrono Trigger and Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Another Story (or BSSM:AS for short) is the former automatically reveals the dual or triple-techs available when characters are together during a fight while in the latter you need to find them out yourself.

So it means, like in this exemple, you need to take every Sailor Senshi and pair them and see if the link works.

In some cases, it doesn't work. The whole thing feels tedious very fast, believe me.

You can later check in the links you have discovered and their effects.

The same goes for triple techs. Again it's not very clever, you only need at the start of the game to try every combinations and you're done with it. Chrono Trigger did it better in that characters gain techniques as they grow in power and those techniques then allow them to do dual or triple techs, there is a sense of growth in power. Not in this game but then again it might be because Sailor Moon is FUCKING AWESOME in the first place.

Another important concept that Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Another Story (or BSSM:AS for short) uses: links are in a first time very weak. That's because each character has a Link Power attribute that determines, you guessed it, the power of the link attack. This attribute gets higher only when used, and only the character initiating a link will get "link exp", not the other Senshi who are part of it. This other element basically makes link system underpowered at the start and tedious to train. The consequences is that, for pretty much all the game, you are better off using spamming techs and ignore the dual or triple techs, except maybe for special ones, like those that resurect fallen party members.

Last bit of info about the link system: Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi-Moon can both turn into their Super form, breaking their links with all other characters. But they can then link with each other for a very powerful "hidden" move.

With my homework done and a full link menu, I then left the Shrine to reach the School, the steamroll way. Get a few levels and enemies become a joke. At least there is no level scaling in this game, which makes it a lot better than Oblivion.

At last! This isn't much of an evil fortress for our enemies but it'll have to do. In a real display of mastery of the dramatic medium, the camera leaves my character to focus on the roof of the school:

They're wandering around inside of our illusions, as usual. Only...Lady Serenity continues to be protected by the Ginzuishou.

While "Lady" is in our hands, she can't be touched by a single finger. We just need to be patient a little longer.

I bet that in the original version, she says she can't be touched by a single tentacle.

Looks like our objectives are clear: rescue the pink-haired girl that we only saw in the intro.

Also in the infirmary we can find the traveler who heals tired people for free but weirdly enough I did not take any pictures of him. I blame this on the fact I'm tired and I did not get many pics of naked chicks in my mailbox.

Big deal, Sailor Moon can conjure up huge hearts that she can throw at her enemies, now talk about impressive! I bet this choice will impact the game until the end; leaving Sailor Mars behind means we'll have to fill her void.

This update took longer than expected because of that: I suffered through outbursts of maniacal laughter due to the sheer atrocity of that text. The worst part is that I feel like re-reading the manga again just to make sure it wasn't that different than I remember.

I'm sorry, but dry prequels don't really do it for me. That and the 2nd movie was complete ass and watching it caused me to miss Jim Edmonds walk off homer in the 2004 NLCS.

I know GitS:SAC wasn't really a prequel, but it nonetheless gave me the emotionless feel of one. Still, it's certainly a high quality production and to each his/her own.
