Take Mandana and Vicky. Eli is ok character so he can stay home. Or he WAS OK until this wild hunt thing.

Yes, it's all too easy to write unoriginal urban fantasy. Much like heroic fantasy, it has a lot of ready-to-use stereotypes.

As for the companions, I suggest Mandana and Vicki.

Thinking about it, why did they had to shove the Wild Hunt? It seemingly serves no purpose besides making Eli more miserable and gain extra "pity points", seeing that the game quite (un)subtly implies his past life literally burned out, and he's partially immortal to boot.

A cool thing is that the main menu changes when you get new dudes. You can see Vicki added to the party view.

You may also notice that protag is different from the main menu pic on the first page, since I initially played the game for a short while with a mans.

We ride on to eternal glory.

    [IMG] Hey, Eli, whatcha reading?

[IMG] "Draft week". It's a personal account of the 1863 draft riots.

[IMG] If you wanted a personal account, you can ask me. I was there.

[IMG] I know, but I thought I'd read an account WITHOUT gremlins in it first.

[IMG] My version is more accurate.

    [IMG] Jesus. Forget I asked.

Enough jibby-jabba, duty calls. Per popular demand, Mandana and Vicki will be coming with us.

[IMG] I have not been to this area since the 70s. It was a dangerous place to be in those days.

[IMG] So I heard. "The Bronx is burning" and all that. A lousy time to be a cop in New York.

[IMG] I... refer to the 1770s. This road was a frequent skirmish point between the colonists and the British. If I close my eyes, I can still hear the cannons.

    SHELLS IN THE NIGHT.

Taking a look around, we see an ad for some kind of historical drama. You're a bit out of touch as far as pop-culture goes.

It's obviously a poster for the Wadjet Eye game A Golden Wake. There's also some guy standing around.

This MTA officer surveys the area. He is glowing over his cup of coffee.

    [IMG] Markus? Is that you?

[IMG] Santina! Long time no see.

[IMG] I thought you pulled the pin.

[IMG] I did. Turns out retirement doesn't suit me. But what about you? I heard you, uh, had some trouble?

[IMG] Some, yeah. Working through it.

[IMG] Right, right. Glad to hear it.

:codexisfor: [Perception] You two know each other?

[IMG] You don't remember Markus? He used to work the ferry.

[IMG] Yep. I got to ride the boat all day while you cops did the real work.

[IMG] If I remember right, you stopped your fair share of creeps.

[IMG] Well, here's a secret. When your beat is a boat, the bad guys got nowhere to go.

:codexisfor: You worked the ferry? What was it like?

[IMG] It was a sweet gig in the summer, I'll say that much. Sunshine. Free hotdogs from the commissary. 360 degrees views of Lady Liberty. But in the winter? Forget it. It got so cold and damp my uniform would turn to ice. After five years of that, it was time for a lateral move. The subway might be filthy, but it's WARM.

I... question the judgement of this man.

:codexisfor: Lousy night to be out, huh?

[IMG] The damp doesn't bother me much. Not as long as I have my jitter juice here.

:codexisfor: Has anything... strange happened in the area recently?

[IMG] I work the subway, lady. I see five strange things before noon. You're gonna need to be a lot more specific than that.

But have you seen my dad, a middle-aged guy?

    :codexisfor: Thanks. See you around.

    [IMG] Stay dry out there.

The exit east heads "to the corner". West - "Gun Hill Road heads east to a residential area".

Hm, okay, I guess that would be right west to the corner and left east to the residential area.

Visigoths are goths from the west, but goths from the west are east of us.

Anyway, The Corner (tm) sounds intriguing.

    oh dear

:evilcodex: DO YOU HEAR THE VOICES TOO?

:evilcodex: IT IS AS THOUGH A THOUSAND MOUTHS CRY OUT IN PAIN

And this is... kind of weird. Why am I telling you all this?

:martini: I've got a face people trust. You just couldn't help it.

Hah, yeah. Maybe you could run for mayor. Still doesn't solve my problem. I just... don't know what to do. I knew that room at the Eddings house was too good to be true. I KNEW it.

:martini: It's obvious what you need to do.

Obvious to YOU maybe. Me? I'm drawing a blank. What do you suggest?

:martini: You just need to get a bit... creative.

    The vision fades.

[IMG] Hush. She is waking up.

    :deadtroll: Anyone got any aspirin?

[IMG] I do not believe common medicine would be effective. You seem... well. Much improved from last time.

:codexisfor: My body is adjusting to demon visions. Great.

[IMG] Lotsa people pay good money to have visions. And they have to spend a week starving in the woods.

Sounds like you're speaking from experience, Vicki.

[IMG] Anyway, the woman in the vision said something about the Eddings house? Shouldn't be hard to track down. I've had worse leads.

    [IMG] Indeed. Let us proceed.

... there's actually nothing to do in this place. No new exits, nothing to interact with, it was only there to trigger horny visions. 10/10

    Time to step back.

[IMG] Nope. I'm trying to stop some.

[IMG] That's what I like to hear.

:codexisfor: Do you know where the Eddings place is?

[IMG] ... now why would you be asking about that?

:whiteknight: I'm looking into what happened. It's linked to a case i'm working on.

    Codexia is caught flashing again.

[IMG] Santina? This lady on the level?

    [IMG] ... sure.

[IMG] All right then. I don't know what kind of case you're working, but if it's linked to the Eddings place, I don't wanna know. Head west from here. Turn right on Morgan. It's the last house on the left.

West? But the description says the road heads east :x

    :codexisfor: Thanks very much.

[IMG] Sure. You be careful out there.

Heading (W)est. Or (E)ast. Who the hell can even tell.

    Sup.

A half-crumpled brick lies forgotten on the sidewalk.

    Great!

Random bricks are exactly what I love to pick up!

Down the street, dozens of homes line Morgan Ave.

Good that we know the whereabouts of our target.

    Doesn't look too impressive.

[IMG] This is the place that Markus mentioned. Looks pretty ordinary.

The garage door is too heavy to lift, obviously, and the mailbox is empty. Front door maybe?

Guess not. Only thing left is to go around the back.

    O hey

    Muh artistic shots.

    ... down, down, down...

    A window!

    :what:

    Okay, that was unexpected.

Nothing particularly useful here. Just a rusty water tap that doesn't werk.

Thankfully, we are armed with a brick.

    SWING!

    AND!

    miss

[IMG] If that's your throwing arm, I'm glad you don't have your gun anymore.

    Even the window isn't impressed.

    AGAIN!

    :negative:

[IMG] Indeed. You lack the necessary arm strength to hit your target.

    [IMG] Wow. Kinda harsh there.

[IMG] I only speak the truth.

    Zing.

    Inquisitor Santina, engage inferno pistol.

[IMG] So... this veil thing you put on my gun. Nobody will be able to hear it?

    [IMG] Yes.

    [IMG] Right. Cool.

    THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES @_@

    Aiming...

    FEUER!

    [IMG] Well shot.

[IMG] Give me something hard next time.

    :shredder:

I don't see any ladders here though.

Fortunately, Codexia turning in place and looking at everything in confusion is enough to give Bandana the necessary signal.

    Hot.

    Here we are.

    :codexisfor: Who are you?

    Hurr.

:codexisfor: Wooo yourself. What are you doing here?

    We need help! it says.

    Totally not a trap.

Some stuff in this kitchen, like a bunch of notes on the fridge. The note reads: "I MADE WAFFLES!! ENJOY! -A" and "Please don't touch the quinoa! -D".

Also, a small screwdriver lies abandoned on the floor. Naturally, we appropriate it. Further, on the wall, an old phone. It looks like the line was cut. And a clock above the window: This clock has stopped. It's frozen at 3:30.

    Let's move.

    :codexisfor: ...

Which forces the mirror to go ":(", hue. And then Quick! You can unlock the door from this side.

Some garbage pics hanging about. A picture of a face splattered with something that is *probably* red paint.

A photo of a man and a car.

    Slam, babies.

A photo of a woman and a dog.

    :shittydog:

    Should get the others in.

[IMG] Perhaps we should enter and see for ourselves.

    Indeed.

We shall do it Soon (tm).

If you bring Mandana and Eli along for the mission, the window puzzle is solved by giving the brick to Mandana, even if you're playing as a man, and letting her throw it. Yep.

Well, admittedly bricks are pretty heavy. At 2kg+, it's not that easy to throw one well upwards.

You know, the first real puzzle of the game (with the ghoul from another dimension) seemed rather promising. It's probably not extremely hard to figure out, but you do get killed if you try to solve it in a direct, simple manner. The solution requires combining several objects and actions.

Did they just give up after designing the very first puzzle of the game ? In the previous mission, the few puzzles all had extremely simple solutions. And in this mission, just when you think there's going to be a puzzle (how to enter the house), the problem is solved without even requiring you to think.

Come to think of it, is it even possible to die in the previous mission ?

I think they blew their budget on making sure there was a simple solution for every 2 companion combination you can bring with you to missions eg. the burned leaflets from the grill party on Staten Island - if you did Bronx first, then the solution for the keypad lock puzzle was different ( and even more trivial ). It's an ambitious approach to game design, but the trade off is shedding the puzzle elements

That would explain it (and it's kind of worrying, as the number of combinations will keep increasing).

So, are there more "instant death upon failure" puzzles in the game? Or timed ones? That's looking like a "bait-and-switch" situation.

Vicki's had enough of this writing on the wall.

    :codexisfor: KayKay?

[IMG] Ghosts do not have this ability.

Bet that's what mommy tells you.

    or told you rather

    that sounds familiar...

Might as well go up then.

The hula girl on the shelf starts bouncing, making Vicki go apeshit

[IMG] I would... strongly suggest holstering your weapon, detective.

[IMG] Sorry, bit jumpy. It's this house. Something about it ain't right.

    She puts away da gun.

[IMG] My dad had one of those in his car. I wanted to shoot that one too.

Ghost is obviously leading us into a trap, but before going to the end of rhine hall, we pick up the figurine.

Screws, you say. Good that we have a screwdriver.

    Ancient chinese secret.

Better explore the rest of the area first.

The door is slammed the moment we open it.

The hell. Joey could never do shit like this and he was surely a spirit guide with more XP.

The other door will shut at once too, so there's only one way to go.

    uh hi

[IMG] Courage to change the things I can... and wisdom to know the difference.

Doesn't seem like the spirits are particularly amused. Maybe the alcoholic's prayer isn't very useful against non-alcoholics.

    [IMG] That isn't helping!

He sits cross-legged in the middle of a glowing circle. He's chanting quietly to himself.

And the ghosts: they're fuzzy and indistinct. They stare blankly ahead, barely noticing you are even here.

    :codexisfor: Um, hello?

Codexia makes everyone's eyes go wide upon first meeting.

[IMG] Are you... real? Or am I just hallucinating from hunger?

    shoulda brought KFC

Golden rule: there is power in names. Never give yours away.

    :codexisfor: What's going on here?

[IMG] Well, that's the question, isn't it? I've been here... three days, I think? Didn't think anyone would come.

[IMG] Nevertheless, we are here. My name is Mandana. This is Vicki Santina.

FFS stop blowing our cover, Bandana :argh:

[IMG] I'm Logan Brown. I... could really use your help.

    "Brown", very original.

:codexisfor: Does it have to do with those ghosts over there?

[IMG] Hold on. You... you can SEE them? Like, actually see them?

    :nocountryforshitposters:

[IMG] Insomuch as one can see any lost spirit. They have no human form.

[IMG] What do you mean, no human form?

:codexisfor: Every ghost we've seen looks like grey shapeless blobs.

[IMG] Shapeless blobs? No, that's not right. I see people. Two women, one man. They're confused and angry, not exactly easy to talk to.

[IMG] [Intelligence] Let me see if I understand. You can see these spirits, and you can talk to them.

    [IMG] Yeah.

[IMG] [Intelligence: Critical Success] I see. You are the one KayKay told us about. The Bestower.

[IMG] Yeah, uh, that's me. You know your stuff.

[IMG] [Intelligence: Extended Success] You came here to help these three spirits pass on.

[IMG] That's right. Only things went a bit... wrong.

    :codexisfor: Wrong?

    Auuuuughhh yourself.

    [IMG] Crap.

[IMG] Shh, just relax. Okay, she's calm. For now. I... kind of need to focus. Can you help me, or what?

:codexisfor: Tell us what's going on first.

[IMG] Later. When I got this under control. But for now? I need to know their names. It's the best way to get through to them. Can you do that? Figure out their names?

:codexisfor: You can't ask them yourself?

[IMG] I've tried. They won't listen to me. Which is why I need their names.

[IMG] So we go pound the pavement. Just like any other investigation.

[IMG] I... guess? Whatever it takes. I'd go myself, but I'm kinda trapped.

:codexisfor: Got it, we'll be back.

    [IMG] Thanks. Seriously.

Maybe this time we can access these shits.

    Hello there.

Not a whole lot of interesting stuff among the garbo. A post-it note has the words "BUY EARPLUGS" written in very hard, angry letters. Interesting.

There's also a metal trash can under the desk.

[IMG] It looks to be full of... ashes.

[IMG] Jesus, burning documents in a trash can. Could've burnt the whole place down.

Or maybe the resident was just a chain-smoker?

Anyway, guess Eli would be useful here. But since he ain't around, let's move on.

    :happytrollboy:

    What do we have here.

The faint whiff of old marijuana smoke and this peace sign suggest the inhabitants were hippies.

The left night table has a single drawer.
    PLUNDER!!

    wut

    rip, agent Doggett

The other night stand is empty. However, a framed photo sits on it.

    Fkn hippies :argh:

Next, a heavy wooden closet lies against the far wall. Loot!

[IMG] Huh. Some 70s reject clothes. A tacky umbrella. An old doll...

Says you, I want that umbrella.

Looking anywhere else in the house gives no results. However, Staten Island XP tells us all we need to do is run around and talk to everyone, everywhere.

    'Sup.

:codexisfor: Did something happen at the Eddings place?

Smooth. It's not like 15 minutes ago you said you were a cop investigating it.

[IMG] Not for me to say, sorry. You might be a cop, but you don't work in this district. I probably should keep my mouth shut.

:codexisfor: Three people died at the Eddings place. Do you know who they were?

[IMG] I told you. It's not for me to say.

[IMG] Come off it, Markus. You and I both know you aren't employed by the police. You're employed by the MTA.

    [IMG] So?

[IMG] So as far as cops are concerned, you're a private citizen. You can talk to whoever you want.

[IMG] And I should talk to you because...?

    :hmmm:

[IMG] Because you know me. I wouldn't ask you something like this if it wasn't important.

[IMG] Well, I suppose because it's you...

    [IMG] Right on. Thanks, Markus.

[IMG] You were right. Three people died - the two owners, Art and Jess Eddings - and a student renting out the spare bedroom. Dana something, I forget her last name. Jess was found stabbed in the back yard. Art killed himself in the garage. Dana was found in the basement, also stabbed. Nobody knows exactly what happened, but folks have been steering clear of that place since.

    ZOG, ES LOIKE A MEATGROINDA

:codexisfor: Could you tell me about Art and Jess?

[IMG] They lived here twenty years at least. They're the local artists, EVERYONE knew them. You always see them around the neighborhood. He'd be in that beat-up old car, and she'd be walking that old dog of hers. Come to think of it, nobody knows what happened to the dog. Hopefully she'll turn up.

Well, we know the doge ain't coming back.

:codexisfor: What do you know about Dana?

[IMG] Not much. She was a student, I know that. Needed a cheap place to live. Jess and Art liked having students around. They vibed off youthful energy, they said.

:codexisfor: People have been steering clear of the house?

[IMG] Well, you know. A double murder and a suicide tends to put people off. You wouldn't catch me going in there, I'll tell you that much.

    How convenient.

    :codexisfor: Thanks, see you around.

P sure we have all we need for now.

Speaking of dead people found in the garage and basement... How the fuck do you get into those? There's no staircase leading down here, no storm cellar door outside. Is the sole access REALLY through the garage door ONLY?

:codexisfor: I found some names. Dana, Art and Jess.

    THERE IS POWER IN NAMES.

[IMG] You sure? Let's try it. Are those your names? Art? Jess? Dana?

    suddenly

    things turn spooky!

    2spooky4me

[IMG] What the hell did you just do?

[IMG] No, no! Please, there's no need for this! Art? Dana? Jess? Just... relax, fellas. Please! Relaxxxx.

the ghost blob morphs from three to one to three again

    might and magic 11

[IMG] Close? That was a poltergeist!

    zomg!

[IMG] Let me guess, that's bad?

[IMG] You have no idea. A poltergeist forms when spirits are corrupted. It is a perversion. It should... not happen. At least, it should not happen anymore.

[IMG] Well, it happens now! These ghosts attacked us. They tried to tear KayKay apart! We barely got this circle up in time.

[IMG] We need to understand what happened here.

[IMG] Fine. I... think I've got things under control. If you have questions, ask 'em now.

:codexisfor: What is that circle you're standing in?

[IMG] Oh, this? KayKay taught me how to make it. Ghosts can't cross it.

[IMG] Ghosts as well as any creature of spirit.

    [IMG] You know your stuff.

[IMG] I have had... experiences... with such things. Which is why I am concerned. Mages expend tremendous amounts of energy to create them. How did you manage it?

[IMG] Me? I just drew the circle. It was KayKay who turned it on.

[IMG] This is... unprecedented. You and your spirit guide must be very powerful indeed.

[IMG] We're just doing our job. One day at a time. Or we would, if we weren't stuck here.

:codexisfor: How long have you been here?

[IMG] Two or three days maybe? I had some energy bars in my pocket. That got me through the worst of it. But yeah, it won't be long before my shoes start looking very tasty.

    :codexisfor: What happened here?

[IMG] Like I said, we came here to put these ghosts to rest. Usually it doesn't take much. We talk to them a bit, learn who they are, try and get through to them. But these three? They got violent. Ugly. They went after KayKay. Tried to rip her to shreds, poor kid was terrified.

[IMG] Kid? Just how old are we talking?

    [IMG] She's ten.

    :hmmm:

Wanna bet "KayKay" is actually Kendra, the little girl ghost from Blackwell Epiphany?

    [IMG] Jesus. What happened?

[IMG] We got this circle up. It calmed them down long enough for her to escape. We've been separated ever since. If she comes in here, the ghosts attack her. I leave this circle, the ghosts attack ME. So... you see my dilemma here.

    [IMG] You couldn't call anyone?

[IMG] All this spiritual energy screws with my phone. But even still, I couldn't bring anyone else in here, it's too dangerous.

... but the circle is keeping them at bay why is it dangerous

:codexisfor: Why aren't the ghosts attacking me or my friends?

[IMG] Because they don't know you're here. Ghosts barely see other people. Only me and KayKay. As long as I don't provoke them, they won't go crazy again.

:codexisfor: Why couldn't we see KayKay outside?

[IMG] She is not a lost spirit, but an aware spirit guide. Different rules apply here.

3rd law of conservation of ectoplasma

[IMG] KayKay and I are bonded at the soul. Only I can see her, it's the way it's always been.

:codexisfor: Have ghosts attacked you before?

[IMG] No. Ghosts are normally... harmless. Confused and alone, but harmless. Usually I could talk them down. Find some point of connection. Get them to trust me. But these guys? They won't even listen. They just... hate.

    :mob:

[IMG] You are not alone. Supernatural beings have been getting progressively stronger.

[IMG] So things are just going to get worse?

[IMG] I cannot lie. Things will be worse. I am sorry.

[IMG] Well, one thing at a time. Let's focus on getting me out of here. Then I'll worry about how screwed I am.

:codexisfor: We saw a ghost in the East Village the other day.

Yes, and also on Staten Island, but somehow you don't feel like mentioning that.

[IMG] You did? Is it still there?

[IMG] I can only assume so.

[IMG] Well, get me out of here and I'll be happy to check it out for you. It's the least I could do.

:codexisfor: How do you usually help a ghost move on?

[IMG] It... depends. Usually we talk to them. Convince them they're actually dead. Sometimes an object works. Something they're attached to. Something that reminds them of who they are.

:codexisfor: So what can we do to help you?

[IMG] I don't know! With other ghosts, KayKay does most of the talking. Ghosts relate to her more, being a ghost herself. But I'm on my own this time. These three won't listen to me, they're just so... angry. So I hope you guys have some ideas, because I'm out.

[IMG] My knowledge of lost spirits is minimal, but I have heard Eli speak of them. Poltergeists do not occur naturally. We need to discover how these three died.

[IMG] An investigation, huh? That I can handle.

:codexisfor: Sit tight, Logan. We'll be back.

[IMG] Believe me, I'm not going anywhere.

We will indeed be back... next time.

Bit of a boran update, but you can prepare yourself for some... developments in the next one

    That seems a reasonable reaction.

You laugh, but why can't we bring the poor guy some food from the store? Or that café that does nothing? Too much effort?

Djinns may be unable to lie, but they don't understand subtlety too.

    Video-game architecture for the win!

A good excuse to have ghosts and spirit ghosts do all of that fancy stuff.
    So far not impressed.

I guess with Logan in the party, you'll start seeing ghosts as people instead of 'grey shapeless blobs'.

And it looks like KayKay knows more tricks than old Joey...
