Quite a unique vibe there, with bits of Stalker, Knights Templar conspiracy theories and Lovecraft thrown in for the mix. A thoroughly enjoyable LP, hats off to you good sir! :salute:

Whoa, the original design documents have been released( thanks CappenVarra !) . It seems to be a very early pre-development draft and a LOT has been changed in the game. Just to mention a few things:

- Originally the ruins were supposed to be inhabited not only by Dinosaurs, but also by "Mogs", mutated pre-historic hominids.
- Sasha was originally supposed to be a pre-historic amphibian hominid, some sort of real life mermaid unrelated to Niamh.
- There were several other humans roaming the ruins, including a Viking, a 19th century sailor, the ghost of a priest who befriended Sir Guy and others.
- The writer who is also an historian(Richard Guy) probably didn't chime in at that point. There are a lot of silly things that were ditched, for instance, the babylonians/"ancient byzantines" responsible for the ruins were originally meant to be celtic druids.

It's very noticeable in this early draft is that there were very little horror influences, in fact the lovecraftian feel of the game is quite absent, as is the utter backstabbing paranoia and cosmic horror that made this game so great. The story also has been changed a lot(for the better I would say!). Originally the plague ravaging mankind was a mutation of the AIDS virus( ) and the whole conspiracy theories involving the Freemasons and the Priory of Sion were absent. In fact, by the end of the game the player character was simply put into government custody, the supreme mindfuck that ended up being the cliffhanger ending was absent.

Another trivia of note is that the Oisin/Niamh backstory was based on an actual celtic myth. I though that one was very cool:

It is a very interesting read for those that played the game or followed the LP. Anyway:

Also, is anyone else for completely revoking FretRider's GD/political poo chute posting (and ideally reading) privileges, so that he doesn't get distracted by shitposting?

It is no distraction. Truth is there is not much to post outside GD/political. Aside from the occasional thread about the games I like, that is.

The design documents were somewhat disappointing. They are very interesting, sure, but in many aspects it is almost as if they deal with a different game. The bare bones of the plot and setting are there, but by the time the game was developed they had changed most of the background and characters(not to mention everything else: The design document deals with a myst style game using FMV). I would be interested in reading more about the disturbing effects of Grailstone, the Priory of Sion, about the Babylonians/Ancient Byzantines, the Templesein and the rest of the more obscure pieces of game lore. Turns out that those were not yet part of the game when these design documents were written.

Surprisingly enjoyable LP. Good story and an atmosphere that leaked through the stills. Too bad about the ending though. The whole LP had me thinking that the grailstone was a very bad thing and better hidden/forgetten about forever after it was retrieved, but then he goes on to found some NWO. Woulda liked more on the original occupiers of the cave and the origin of the grailstone as well :( both had some strong lovecraftian vibes coming off of them and would have made for a better ending imo. Sequels...

Then you'd have more free time on your hands - problem?

It would be a win-win solution, we'd have less retarded shit clogging the 'dex and you'd have reputation centred around your taste in games like AzT and insights into them, rather than banal shitposting.

Geez Draq, leave your gd butthurt out of my LP.

There is very little activity in the playground and adventure forums, like it or not.

This is epicjoy, and it makes me miss good adventure games.

Is Journeyman Project anything like this in depth?

I never played the Journeyman Project. If you like this game, a natural followup are the games developed by frictional(Penumbra series and Amnesia). They are quite different but are also strangely a return to much of what this game tried to do in 1996.
