I'll probably be using Adel every map until the very end.

I wouldn't recommend trying that on a first run. You'll break a lot of spears (and your sanity). :P

Also, after turn 24 you only get one roll for weapon skill (and that's only on successful hits). So you can't grind forever on one map.

Update 133: Chapter 8-1 - The Veterans (part 1)

CbXuEtu.jpg

An officer is contemplating his dilemma:

AiItSIV.jpg

Folmer: (Are there no battalions that can move out of position to help...? This isn't good... What do I do?)

AtGEYBC.jpg

Christine: ...Major?

Folmer: Huh? Oh, right, right... You're one of Lord Reese's soldiers, aren't you?

Christine: Yes, sir. My name is Christine. I am a member of Sinon's mounted archery unit.

Folmer: Oh, of course! Why didn't I think of it sooner? You and your soldiers are here!

Christine: ...Yes...? Have I missed something important, Major Folmer?

Folmer: Oh, right, you wouldn't have been told yet...

1YlpZq8.jpg

Folmer: I recently received news that a squadron of Imperial saboteurs had begun moving toward there. I sent a messenger to our allies to evacuate the townspeople... but he was attacked enroute, and all he could do was make it back here. Now, my second messenger has finally made it, but the Imperials are already approaching Heim...

Christine: I see... What will you do? Surely you will not abandon the townspeople to be slaughtered?

Folmer: Certainly not. As a soldier, it is my duty to protect them. Not to mention that I personally owe a great deal to some people of that town... However, I was at a loss, as there were no forces that could be spared to send to their aid. That's when I realized it... Would Lord Reese allow you Knights of Sinon to do this for me? I will, of course, assist with any expenditures the mission may take.

Christine: I understand. I will confer with Lord Reese and seek his approval.

Folmer: Oh, thank you! I only need you to protect the citizens until they can evacuate. My scouts tell me the Imperials enlisted several expert marksmen and manhunters. Please let Lord Reese know that his soldiers should take due care.

4EfY9mD.jpg

Folmer: There's a group of old men who live in the town. Dudley, Chebyshev, Gibbs, and Webber are their names. Those four old men are... how should I put it... Hot-blooded and fickle. They'll charge head-on at the enemy if you let them. Please do not let them.

SYg70uK.jpg

Off to do some more firefighting then.

There are 10 deployment slots available for this mission:

vCNYi04.jpg

Before I prepare a party for that, I'll briefly talk about Dean post-recruitment.

2q5W92f.jpg

As you can see, the Bhuj (another reference to a historical weapon: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhuj_(weapon) ) is quite powerful. In fact it's likely to be overkill at this stage, and given how plentiful generic axes are, I'll be saving it for later.

MsuOHoJ.jpg

A nice bit of story-gameplay integration, Dean learning the mercy skill allows him to help with capturing. The bolt knife still remains the best option for injuring opponents at this point, however.

Going back to the mission preparations, I'll be hiring Kramer (500), Volo (1300) and Faye (650) to facilitate their permanent recruitment. I have one seat left at the Kingfisher for this chapter, so Kramer can get the accuracy buff there:

rgi17yO.jpg

Ruby, Sherlock and Czene can also come along for training. Larentia's mobility should be handy here; as well as Sherpa (guard) and Elbert (provoke). Izerna rounds out the roster.

Equipment is a bit cheaper again after the last batch of citizen requests, an iron spear now costs 890 (base price 1000):

dqM2KsH.jpg

Larentia can have one too since her Euthyphro is about to break. Kramer and Sherpa receive a longsword and shortsword respectively. Sherlock stocks up on steel+ arrows, Christine on standard iron arrows.

I retire Sherlock's horse in exchange for a slightly better one:

s16JbAT.jpg

Finally, some vulneraries are distributed as a backup measure. There's still about 18k denarii in reserve for future spending.

8ZKqJoV.jpg

Christine is still a bit underleveled for using the apollyon, but that won't be the case for too much longer. I dumped some leftover archery gear from the last mission in her bag as well.

hJZE6mz.jpg

Going all the way from 74% to 99% accuracy will pay dividends for training Kramer. I haven't deployed him in a while so he has some catching up to do.

pg7e8r8.jpg

If I'm remembering correctly, Ruby is one mission away from her happiness requirement. Promotion requires one more level after recruiting her.

A9FgPOR.jpg

Izerna is now at a high enough level to use fortify without penalty, thanks to having the skill expert. I don't anticipate this to be a long mission, so her current selection of orbs should be sufficient.

FqqwuRT.jpg

Sherlock will hit his unpromoted bow skill cap soon (30), which will take him up to 90% (base) accuracy with the composite bow and +arrow types. The composite bow should last the whole battle, if needs be I'll trade something to him later in the fight.

qAKu3Bj.jpg

As usual, Elbert's job will be utilizing provoke to neutralize key threats. It's a great skill for mitigating unpredictability in most engagements, especially when you need to protect NPCs. Just keep in mind that you sacrifice moving\attacking on that turn.

aLh6nOQ.jpg

My plan for Czene is to have her hide in some trees, and pick a few good targets of opportunity to get the last bit of experience she needs for promotion.

Tvcw6vT.jpg

Volo's on chip damage duty, since he doesn't need any more levels to be effective. With the shortsword equipped, he has a 31% chance of activating adept (skill/2 + attack speed), which might throw a wrench in things.

HDmDroh.jpg

Larentia's wyvern will be helpful for plugging gaps in the line and reinforcing quickly. Now that I think about it, passing her some verutums for throwing would be a good idea...

hcqLquH.jpg

Last but not least, Sherpa's role here will be defensive in nature. The shortsword will prevent him inadvertently stealing experience from units I'm training.

Arriving near the town of Heim, our party is in the southwest of this sector, next to the escape point:

jTAO5kz.jpg

There is some farmland to the north above cliffs, and a few dwellings are beyond that. Parts of the town extend to the northeast as well.

ucHGQYW.jpg

The ballistae operators (green) must be the old men Folmer was talking about.

zmCRfvM.jpg

The town centre is directly ahead, just off the road.

wKCU48N.jpg

There is a river crossing to the southeast, and a branch in the road running parallel to the river itself.

wLAZdSs.jpg

In the far north along the main road, across a bridge, is the lead element of the Imperial attack:

KbSDJ1C.jpg

Funca appears to be the commander of this force.

f7Kz1tw.jpg

Aside from carrying a crafting material, his skillset is also notable.

I assume you meant Ruby?

Triangle button is your friend ;)

Horse Swap is still limited to recruited units only. Units you've hired but haven't recruited cannot have their horse traded with Horse Swap. I once bought Arthur a Morachian Warhorse and couldn't trade it to someone else until he was fully recruited.

That's why it says "not usable with guest or mercenary units". Arthur is a mercenary in your example.

I always play these games for max ranking/low turn count, I can't help it.

Trick to raising Adel up seems to be always seeking opportunities to let Vantage work (sometimes you'll have to de-equip shield). Make sure to throw him into any nearby crowds of enemies. He's faster than many bosses too, so just park him next to one and keep Leon nearby. If you're making use of Vantage, his weapon levels keep up with everyone else's quite well (he'll be fighting 3 or 4 times as much as the next unit). After many restarts, I've learned to give Leon and Adel the first two Sinon Horses, no other units can make use of the +2 Speed so well.

You do go through quite a few Slim Spears, but those are the workhorse weapons of my army. The shop never runs out of those things.

Leon/Adel are good in the early game, but their effectiveness falls off later. Promotion doesn't really help them much gameplay-wise, lances don't synergize with their other skills.

You're going to have even more fun promoting Daoud and Aegina ;)

Is it possible to recruit all of the mercenaries and view all of their stories?

Are you going to do so in your playthrough?

Update 134: Chapter 8-1 - The Veterans (part 2)

yd3zw9i.jpg

kwv6DlX.jpg

Gibbs: You think we've just been sitting on our porches drinking tea for the past forty years?! You young folks don't even have what it takes to keep up with us! Heh heh heh!

Christine: Major Folmer asked me to make sure you stayed out of the battle...

Dudley: Folmer? That snot-nosed little runt?

bPJCakL.jpg

Christine: He is firm but fair to his soldiers, and he-

Dudley: Hey, you guys hearin' this? Somebody made little Folmer into a military commander!

Gibbs: Well, I'll be... Hell must've frozen over! What's this world coming to?

Webber: Hey, it ain't all bad... He did send this little bird to come keep us company! Ain't that right?

He makes an unwanted advance, prompting a brief scream from Christine.

0Gb0G8E.jpg

Webber: You should come over and meet my grandson...

Chebyshev: Webber... Ain't you ever heard of "Look, but don't touch"? Your old lady oughta come back from the grave and give you a good whack upside the head!

Webber: What? It's a compliment! Lass, whoever gets to marry you is gonna be a lucky man, lemme tell you what!

pQefxfW.jpg

Christine: Imperial troops will soon be advancing on this town from across the river!

Dudley: Miss, we'll get a move on as soon as everyone else is safe.

Gibbs: That's right! And you should count yourself lucky to have our help!

Chebyshev: Back in the day, we were the best of the best in the Duchy's 12th Ballistician Division! The "Four Demons on Wheels," they called us! Prepare to be wowed, missy!

Christine: R-Right... Well... As soon as the others make it safely out of town, you need to make your way out too!

Meanwhile, across the river:

wlVV87f.jpg

Lawson: Still...

Funca: What is it?

Lawson: The townspeople appear to have been delayed in evacuating. The city of Navaron has only now sent a detachment to escort them out of the town.

Funca: How fortuitous. We can crush them and take this town as an outpost at the same time.

x7iuzqw.jpg

Eccentric old men aside, we can expect some enemy reinforcements mid-battle.

PMPWpTe.jpg

Although the conditions don't explicitly state that all of the civilians need to escape, the post-mission reward is linked to keeping them alive (at least if I recall correctly).

Chebyshev and friends are surprisingly accurate for their age:

lNay8eH.jpg

However their ballistae will do significantly less damage than you'd expect. For turn 1, it's a pretty straightforward advance along the road.

b8TI6mI.jpg

The bridge chokepoint is slowing down the Imperial troops somewhat.

LNE3iry.jpg

On turn 2, the first civilian emerges from his dwelling:

RMrNtEm.jpg

Dudley opens fire on the approaching spearman (and hits).

oUODZ2O.jpg

Elbert, Ruby and Christine are almost within range of the enemy, as Gibbs takes his turn.

q8kOlv5.jpg

He also hits his target.

3hTmWhn.jpg

On turn 3, the evacuation continues:

LE3naAk.jpg

Sherlock and Ruby's attacks are unsuccessful, although a ballista shot inflicts some damage.

fCQzjv8.jpg

Christine takes the opportunity to mop up the injured spearman with her crossbow.

HCzrk9o.jpg

mcxQHX8.jpg

Elbert takes point. Webber is apparently unimpressed with the opposition:

soRu6mN.jpg

One of these archers has broadhead arrows equipped, which is why I had the knights dismount.

ePHKvJZ.jpg

Larentia is ordered to the right flank.

ztdcoqU.jpg

Next turn, another civilian NPC emerges.

9JsmEwe.jpg

Elbert provokes the nearest crossbowman:

zT3US9b.jpg

Christine (with help from Dudley) takes out another Imperial soldier.

NeVeMlQ.jpg

Sherlock picks up his first kill of the mission.

Ii8V0k5.jpg

Arrows begin to rain down on Ruby's position.

RzVIW9q.jpg

I have her fall back behind the front line, and order Kramer in:

8w53KEA.jpg

He's a bit behind on levels, but will catch up soon enough.

Mwg5K4E.jpg

Sherpa joins the fray to guard Sherlock from attack.

I tried buying all furniture on a trial run, really didn't enjoy it. Killed my IMMERSION

Gonna stick to a max rank run ignoring furniture.

Well the game itself has a dialogue line poking fun at the furniture (when you first talk to Jonathan). But from a gameplay point of view, it's finding the extra money that's the challenge.

You're going to have even more fun promoting Daoud and Aegina ;)

I've only gotten to 6-1, 6-2, but both Adel and Leon develop really easily and can hold entire fronts if they stick together. Once they get 20 weapon skill the 100 hit rate with Iron Spears is awesome. They aren't as sturdy or nimble as other units so need to use good shields though.

Really enjoy using Daoud (and Marcel too), he needs to hog all the Iron/Broad axes to have decent hit rate though. And Aegina is great, only limited by the limited amount of magic in stock.

It's very minor but I'm tempted to restart again after reaching Chapter 4. I spent 3-1 feeding Aegina every kill I could, when I probably should have been making the kills with Estaban. Was greedy for the Wind skill lvl ups and now I'm low on Airblades, and Esteban is still only lvl 2. Could've gotten him to at least 4.

I was able to capture Seamus in 3-2 by manipulating AI using units with Hide skill (Esteban and Czene) and blocking the northern escape route with Elbert. Slowly wore down the enemy until Seamus was all alone, having spent all his turns running about the map.

But why would Reese spend all his armie's funds on paintings and other garbage? It ruins it for me.

It's better to give her the early kills (also, throw windstorm on her while she's underleveled, that will help). Esteban just needs levels, his bow skill is much easier to increase.

Yeah, you'll find quite a few of the bounty targets will try to run rather than fight to the death.

But why would Reese spend all his army's funds on paintings and other garbage? It ruins it for me.

I know it's not strictly "realistic", but neither is the way food bonuses work. They're abstractions at best or gamey at worst. Up to you, it is a lot easier not having to find an extra 400k or whatever it costs.

I think the money comes from save scumming and capturing everything, and pawning valueable stuff to make furniture purchases. Would need to know the game perfectly to plan out the funding.

But I don't think I'd enjoy it because buying furniture is gay and kills my immersion

I've seen a Japanese max rank run without savescumming, but it was extremely long and likely done by someone who knows the game inside out.

Would need to know the game perfectly to plan out the funding.

Which is why you should try a "normal" run first. It's more fun that way too. You'll kill your enjoyment fast if you try to meet every objective as a newcomer.

Could you link it? Find it hard to believe they wouldn't save scum to make captures at least. Only way I'm able to reliably do it is by making the attempts on turns 5/10/15/20

You don't need to capture whole platoons though, just 2-3 good ones on average per map should be sufficient (named characters are worth double the ransom). There's also injury-boosting food potentially available as well.

It wouldn't be the first time a military commander spend funds allocated to his unit for his own benefits. You also find example of that among managers and politicians. Though it doesn't really work with how Reese is written as an upstanding commander.

Update 135: Chapter 8-1 - The Veterans (part 3)

The first civilian NPC escapes:

kXIGW1O.jpg

Larentia joins the battle.

PUtUaNu.jpg

Izerna gains a level from healing Ruby.

WtT0Wth.jpg

Turn 5, now greater challenges present themselves.

8rcXljj.jpg

3y60G3Z.jpg

Elbert uses provoke again:

hTpqKaU.jpg

Dudley fires his ballista at the very same archer, giving Kramer a chance to sweep in for the kill.

d2OeeD9.jpg

Gibbs eliminates a spearman. However, one of his comrades manages to scale the cliff.

qrMyhjo.jpg

Sherlock takes care of him with double-shot.

zvl9xIA.jpg

Ruby saddles back up, and successfully runs her spear through this crossbowman:

RKJScxZ.jpg

Death from above.

fGVp6eS.jpg

That takes Larentia to double digit speed, not bad.

NIMxXEc.jpg

Now for the reinforcements. Sherpa stands guard next to Sherlock.

NsnZHqm.jpg

Czene has some success with the stun knife, activating injury\disarm at the same time:

koawqJi.jpg

Christine goes for a crossbow shot to cripple the spearman, but the trees provide him enough cover. Volo charges in to deathmatch the adjacent crossbowman, taking a hit in the process.

ryqHqOQ.jpg

As usual, the evacuation continues on turn 6. More pressing though, is another trio of Imperial soldiers arriving from the south:

XTtB9JG.jpg

I play it safe and have Volo fall back to use a vulnerary.

XWaxpuQ.jpg

Sherlock's pinpoint accuracy leaves this Imperial vulnerable to capture.

5SNKN67.jpg

He uses one-two to fire at the crossbowman as well, before retreating with canto. This sets up for Christine.

RX9iCRN.jpg

Ruby blocks an arrow in the north, but I focus on having Czene capture before the crippled soldier makes a run for it. She obtains a longspear and a standard-issue shield, also going up to level 9 in the process.

eerzHgX.jpg

It takes multiple attempts to get rid of this archer, but he is eventually dealt with.

1raF6nL.jpg

Hopefully this woman doesn't burn the village down :P

jSSFIKL.jpg

More Imperials arrive in the north:

Nf5TBZ2.jpg

Now two civilians are safe. Elbert engages Funca.

gHikxfo.jpg

He doesn't do much damage as the latter blocks the spear hit. As fighting in the south intensifies, a third villager escapes.

Larentia and Christine move in to support Sherlock, who has come under fire.

tuzE8LI.jpg

Another turn passes, with the villagers continuing to leave their homes. Elbert and Funca are still dueling, blocking the bridge.

Kramer notches up another one:

Vfdszet.jpg

Getting there...

46v8dHU.jpg

The river crossing is cleared, for now.

n1JeRhV.jpg

Sherlock cantos towards Izerna for healing. On turn 9, Imperial cavalry enters the area:

aPbDDTI.jpg

Czene is hidden from view in the trees, so Sherpa is assigned to protect Volo from harm.

Update 136: Chapter 8-1 - The Veterans (part 4)

The cavalry archer moves first, choosing to attack Izerna:

BZZ7u1V.jpg

Sherlock has double-shot available again, so he is tasked to deal with the threat.

nxFnC8d.jpg

Pretty standard level-up.

CO2EMsZ.jpg

I have him canto north to deal with the reinforcements there.

uVOAbZ0.jpg

Elbert has taken a decent chunk out of Funca:

IzOPMYR.jpg

Just in case, Izerna uses her vulnerary.

HTBQD5d.jpg

An archer hits Sherlock, followed by Ruby landing a crit. The lady sword gives out immediately afterwards though.

LqfjPFt.jpg

Meanwhile, the southern front is under control.

OWNI2cS.jpg

The last civilian begins evacuating on turn 10:

7j2VVia.jpg

Imperial troops continue to arrive as well.

1OkWzhE.jpg

Czene with the minimum damage hit :P

T66pcWT.jpg

Ruby picks up a new sword and deals exactly enough damage to kill.

DyP9AgC.jpg

Lawson moves from his position and injures Elbert:

kk7LcmR.jpg

That crossbow did its job well.

zNQNgQz.jpg

Kramer and Volo take care of the nearby archer.

31meBe6.jpg

Physic allows Izerna to keep a safe distance. I don't recall if I mentioned this earlier, but physic is an old term for medicine, hence "physician".

BrJVqDy.jpg

Next turn, the southern sector is looking much more dangerous:

ydGPNXH.jpg

Elbert distracts the cavalry.

VwsAfDU.jpg

Sherlock picks off an axeman in the north.

EnSVQ1Q.jpg

Ruby tries to intercept the closest target, but fails to hit. Christine, however, succeeds in doing so.

ckX6V1V.jpg

Izerna heals Elbert, while the battle further south gets more intense. Kramer is struck by an arrow, but Volo manages to retaliate with lethal force.

uy1bgsm.jpg

Sherpa stands guard to mitigate any further attacks:

sCIEcBf.jpg

This turn, reinforcements appear north of us.

wXFHChq.jpg

Sherlock makes use of the one-two skill to fell this crossbowman. Note that you can change targets for the second shot, but cannot use canto in-between.

G8SDzFv.jpg

Funca retreats and takes a vulnerary from one of his fellow soldiers.

Nd4LFKc.jpg

Oops, I forgot Izerna was in range of this guy.

sMa4KQB.jpg

Christine responds (I neglected to screenshot the actual kill here).

WDquMQH.jpg

Izerna has to trade for another vulnerary:

LcClCWA.jpg

Vantage pays off, effectively allowing Ruby two consecutive hits on this soldier.

dq1UNrx.jpg

That gains her a level.

Update 137: Chapter 8-1 - The Veterans (part 5)

Czene takes advantage of the bolt knife.

6Y3hnIa.jpg

Volo and Kramer take out the last enemy soldier at the river crossing.

MUvYxkl.jpg

Larentia makes the first move on turn 13, striking at the trio of cavalry archers:

4yiYChK.jpg

Funca throws a javelin at her, but she blocks with her shield, avoiding any serious harm.

Elbert lures the closest archer.

aWqsVnJ.jpg

Ruby charges in to take on the enemy weakened by Larentia earlier in the turn.

DKv1MKa.jpg

Christine switches to raijin arrows, launching one at Funca.

V80WGLc.jpg

The town's population is almost at the escape point:

05rIEue.jpg

On turn 14, Sherlock's double-shot ability once again demonstrates its worth, putting an end to commander Funca.

80nhEwH.jpg

Elbert baits in the remaining horse archer who hasn't moved yet.

JnbxfAI.jpg

Larentia and Christine strike down archer #2.

Pwsh3kO.jpg

Lawson turns his axe on Sherpa:

VF6YzU1.jpg

Izerna steps in to patch him up.

u1HfM1u.jpg

Next turn, Sherpa and Ruby team up to dispatch the final archer.

fC0BvoF.jpg

Sherlock's marksmanship continues to be unparalleled.

wFvBH2F.jpg

He is rewarded with another level-up:

hIE2C72.jpg

Thanks to axebane and her greater speed, Ruby avoids Lawson's attack and counters.

IVynPKt.jpg

Unfortunately my poor planning means I lack effective weapons to deal with him. Nonetheless, the evacuation is complete.

LOe1eXe.jpg

Christine confers with the ballisticians:

7cvvS5g.jpg

Chebyshev: You go on ahead. We'll be right behind you. Don't worry about us. There's hardly any of the enemy left to hurt the town, anyway.

Christine: I suppose... All right, I'll go on ahead. Catch up with us as soon as you can.

Gibbs: Yeah, yeah... We'll come as fast as we can.

Chebyshev: What, you think we'd lie to a pretty girl like you?

Dudley: We'll be there 'fore you know it! Oh, when we get back to Navaron, tell little snot-nosed Folmer somethin' for us, would ya? Now that he's a big shot, I doubt plain folks like us could see him whenever we wanted.

Christine: Sure, what should I tell him?

Christine: Anyway, I'm sorry to nag you, but please hurry!

Dudley: Oh, 'fore you go, I thought I'd give this to you. It's a crossbow I bought once back in my younger days. I never could figure out how to work the damn thing, but I'm sure you can do it.

Christine: This is.. a Hawkeye?! I can't accept something this expensive!

Dudley: Nah, take it! Look at my flabby old arms. You think I could pull that crank? I'll stick to what I'm used to, thanks.

Christine: ...I understand. Thank you very much. Okay, I'll say it one last time, but come as quickly as you can!

Chebyshev: It'd be a shame to let a fine lady like that die.

Dudley: You think she'll take it hard that we fibbed to her?

Chebyshev: What, you worried heaven won't take you anymore? Like they would've anyway!

Webber: That's true. We're all just a bunch of dirty old men, after all!

Gibbs: Heh heh heh!

We're alerted to the sound of a large group of Imperials approaching the town:

Shit just got real. Also, the music just changed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvhbleBYZ-k

Chebyshev: Fine... If you ever beat me in a game of Morachian Poker again, the brooch is yours.

Webber: Wouldn't your wife get angry that you're giving away her keepsake? Heh heh...

Gibbs: Well, I'm sure he'll do a good job at it eventually... Even if he is just a little runt.

Chebyshev: What's with all this pissy serious talk all of a sudden? C'mon, you lousy old coots! Let's show these Razites, for that sweet little lady's sake! We've gotta hold these guys off so she can get the others far away in time!

Dudley: Heh heh heh... Just like old times, eh, guys?
