Update 19 - Fields of Hayasdan (Beautiful Blob Betrayed By Baktrian Bastards)

Ipsos is our only "heartland" province in asia minor and only pleace where we can train our faction units. Unfortunately it's populated only by three families and one dog. I lowered taxes so those bastards would breed faster (dog can go to hell though) but it's not enough. We will train shitty units in Ankyra and then disband them in Ipsos basically resetlling population. It's quite costly but we have to do it (we need some base of operation to fight Epeiros).

Sarpedon is marching to Kyrene because it's one of provinces we must control to meet victory conditions. Unfortunately, taking Kyrene will make us border Carthage, and last thing we need is more fucking imperialistic neigbours.

Zadrakata surrendered without a fight and it's going to get it's ass enslaved because population is unhappy.

It was only matter of time. Finally, Baktria attacked us. Rebelion was not enough and Baktrian "king" want to expand his "kingdom" borders... O tempora, o mores!

I decided not to mess with independent cities in the north and go straight for Hayasdan/Armenia (they are also guys who rebelled against Basileus and we need to destroy they to meet victory conditions). I disbanded our Hellenic Medium Cav because they made complete fools of themselves while we were field testing them during battle with sand niggers. Now we have only prodromoi (who also made fools of themselves but we need SOME cav ffs) in Hegemonides army.

Damn, there is Thessalian cav to recruit here (as pseudo mercenaries) they are sweet but they cost so much... and we have other shit to do with our shekel. Maybe next time.

Baktrian SATRAP (King my ass, you should be my bitch!) is sieging us with one unit of pandotapoi phalangitai, I decided to sally forth and bitchslap them.

Baktrian native phalanx looks pretty much like ours, but they don't have this sweet ass symbol on their shields...

... Actually, do you guys know what this symbol supposed to be? I always wondered what the hell it is, but to this day, I still don't know.

We shouted few instults and Baktrians decided to go just go away.

I put my army on river crossing, waiting for reinforcements because I was sure that even AI is not retaded enough to attack army on river crossing... but no, it is retarded enough to do it.

Well, quite stubborn people, dem parthians. But so silly, oh so silly...

Those guys are not cataphracts, they are "just" armored horse archers but I hate them anyway and concentrated my efforts on killing them.

And my hatred made me reckless and fucked up our formation a bit but we are still fine.

Their general either wanted to save horse archers or was simply stupid and charged into thick of it. We poked him with extreme prejudice and his death resulted in mass rout... rout in OUR direction, so their army got annihilated.

That's parthian general revenge from the grave, our reinforcements got ambushed.

And that's how ambush looks like in this game. Your unit start surrounded by enemy and are in "column" formation.

We quickly tell them to regroup.

And they managed to do it fast enough, well done.

Unfortunately ambushers have one unit of horse archers so they will just shoot us till they are out of arrerz.

They finally charged but then just retreated and left the field, I didn't know that "Eleutheroi" (rebels) armies can retreat so I'm quite surprised.

Well, we "won".

But our eastern army will be reinforced by less troops than they hoped.

Epeirotes signed peace with S.P.Q.R... and they still own southern Italy, that's... unexpected.

Reinforcements arrived and our eastern army is getting ready to poke the heart of Parthian kingdom.

S.P.Q.R are finally doing something in Gaul. They just made Aedui their protectorate (vasall, basically) and that's bad news for Arverni and all Free People Living in a Free State (tm).

First free city here that decided to fight for it's independence.

But it won't save them from being sold into slavery (They were quite happy but I'm not taking any chances).

Now it's time to put Armenia back in line (Historically it was actually Armenia that destroyed remnants of Arche Seleukeia invading Coele-Syria - last bastion of Seleucid king).

Be defualt we are facing stack that attacked us but Armavir garrison is much scarier army and will be behind us, so we have to turn around.

We redeployed, leaving Armavir garrison enough room to organize their line (we could just rush them as they enter the field but that's too cheesy).

We have random shit being trown in our general direction while Armenian infantry do pretty good job at not being completely slaughtered by our Pezhetairoi.

Army behind us is getting close so I send two unit of phalangitai to cover us. This made our left flank a little bit exposed but that's our Argyraspides flank so I have absolutely confidence in them.

Thorakitai! prepare to flank the enemy!

First they shall throw their glorious hellenic javelins and then charge with glorious hellenic fury!

They got butt-charged and we have to send Argyraspides to save their glorious hellenic asses.

Armenians decided to avoid deadly wall of pikes and simply go around our phalanx in the back... sneaky bastards!

Thorakitai are saved but we told them to go being useless elsewhere and let Argyraspides do their job.

Then our rear got completely overrun...

I tried to send Throkitai from right flank to our rear but they got attacked by Armenian noble infantry and we can't move them.

Prodormoi! Follow me, we have to do it ourselves...

Thorakitai on our left flank are not only "occupied" by armenian nobles, they are being fucking slaughtered by them. We had to send some Pezhetairoi to help them.

Meanwhile our archers and skirmishers are in full flight.

And our main phalanx line is getting charged from behind by Armenian royal kinsmen heavy cavalry.

... And our cavalry we send to help, got intercepted by armenians and tastefully raped.

I didn't know they had so many fucking heavy cavalry, man.

... They are everywhere, just... just so many.

Fortunately our Klereouchoi and Pezhatairoi have pretty high morale so they keep fighting.

Armenian cavalry is raping us, but our Argyraspides are completely crushing their infantry.

We managed to encircle one unit of Armenian kinsmen cav and we are not going to let them escape.

Armenian infantry finally broke and we can concentrate on fending off their cavalry attacks.

... And by fending off I mean sending three pahalangitai units to stop one kinsmen heavy cavalry.

But I think they finally have enough.

Why the fuck we even attacked Armenia?

We won, but lost shitton of men, especially since we outnumbered them quite nicely. Hegemonides is far away from Antiocheia so he won't recieve any reinforcements and Armenians are sending more shit here. He's on his own.

Some of our men got healed though... we will put the stuffed bodies of those that didn't on nightwatch to scare off Armenians.

Somehow Hegemonides got "decorated hero" trait for this battle. Whatever.

Pergamon surrendered without a fight and we are going to enslave the shit out of it because it's a huge city and we won't be able to keep them in line if we don't.

We have whole asia minor. Now I want island of Lesbos. Empire needs it for it's... strategic porn industry purposses.

Update 20 - Achtung! Cataphract!

We recruited some some mercenaries to bolster our numbers in Armenia. I hired one hoplite unit and 2 units of persian archers, unfortunately here are no cavalry here to hire (not good one at least).

Ok, Armenians attacked us again. They lost a lot of their heavy cavalry last time and I think those guys don't grow on trees here so we should be fine.

Weather is shit but even if armenian infantry got bonuses in bad weather (or immunity to penalties from it) they are too few anyway so it should not make a difference.

They are walking slowly giving us a lot of time to pepper them wit pointy stuff but those guys are quite well armored so effects were extremely dissaponting.

Their infantry have quite good staying power so we have to do this flanking thingy, fortunately they don't have any light cav to rush us and ruin our plans, like the last time.

We managed to rout them and then our cavalry chased down the routers (that's the only thing our cav is good for).

Now it's second army's turn.

And they have heavy cavalry.

Look at it!

They just fucking charged through our phalanx. I want their cavalry, man (Actually I think we could have royal kinsmen cav by "hiring" allied eastern general in one of our satrapies/allied states but that's costly and unit would be gone if general got killed).

Well, there was too few of them in this battle to do much (and my tunnel vission didn't kicked in) so we managed to eliminate quite easily.

Winning this battle gave us Armavir. We enslaved it and took shitton of money for it.

Seriously? They hauled their asses over here from arabia and attacked us with this stack?

And that's all they have? They will pay dearly for this unprovoked aggresion!

Baktrians attacked again, and this time they brought three armies... There is nothing we can do about it, we may be huge blob but we only have three armies ourselves (and they are nowhere near).

I ordered some family member to deal with sand niggers and just autoresolved it because I don't feel like chasing skirmishers with phalanx. We won and casualties don't matter because we used garrison from Hierosolym and other places to deal with them.

We have those cute guys but I think I will wait for MIC to improve in Antiocheia so we can recruit armored ones.

Parthians are down to 3 provinces and they are trying to save one of them by attacking our army. They have a lot of armoured horse archers here so I'm not really looking forward for this battle.

Parthians brought armoured horse archers, armoured horse archers, armoured horse archers and some cataphracts. We gon get raped.

Good news is that our archers do pretty good job at dropping their armored horse archers.

Well, Dahae Nobles are probably like Suromatae nobles, look all shiny but in reality they are dressed in leather armor with plates of polished horn.

Then more horse archers approached (who would have thought?) and they are shooting our general so we have to get him out of there.

Ok, they brought SOME infantry.

And there I was, thinking "hey, it's going pretty well" and then BOOOM! Cataphracts.

My left flank is fleeing and I can't blame them.

We organized some rescue expedition for our left flank while other Parthian Cat's are chaging straight into our phalanx in the center, because they just don't give a shit.

Pezhetairoi can't hold formation but at least they are not fleeing.

Then fucking miracle happened. Parthian general had heart-attack.

Most of Cats routed because of dead general.

I tried to make sure they won't regroup while trying to keep us in formation because another organized charge could break my men.

And I think they are bugging out.

Yup, they fled.

I think we wasted our chance to deliver finishing blow to parthians here.

We pretty much depopulated Ass-sack creating this army, we can't replenish our forces and mercenaries here suck badly.

And I auto-resolved siege of Nisa because "they have 166 men, auto-resolve can't fucking screw me over on this", but yeah, it can.

But we did some raping and pillaging so I'm allright now.

Then we recruited few mercenaries here but I don't have much hope they will be any help.

Ok, Baktrians finally attacked. I don't think I can defend this city and army that is tasked with fighting Baktrians is in... egypt.

I can't give you exact number right now but it's quite low. I didn't hired any "allied" generals and I adopted/married into family only three guys I think. Game gives me candidates for adoptions every turn but most of those guys are horrible.

Oh, and by the way, do you have any experience with chariots in EB? because I wondered how useful they are because we can recruit some of those and maybe they would give more... flavour to our armies. I would appreciate any hints about them you could give me (if you have any experience with them, of course).

As long as you exterminate, pillage and burn every city you siege, you are conquering the world 'Assyrian Style'. It's not the Chariot that makes the beloved of Ashur, it's the mindset!

About chariots in EB.... I only have experience with the Casse ones. They're quite strong, but unflexible as hell - as you can imagine, cities, forests, broken ground- everything conspires against you. I don't know if the Hellenistic ones are better- more armour will probably help enduring arrows, but I would not recommend them-. Like artillery, I don't think they are cost-effective.

Update 21 Barbarians at the Gates (The Thin Red Line).

Last update ends with Baktrian attacking our city, since battle itself was not in last update it means I haven't done it at all (this shit's live, yo). I reloaded and only change is that worst phoenicians are trying to extort money from us, we told them to choke on a dick and battle with Baktrians can begin.

They have too many rams so we have to defend at city center.

We put two phalangitai units here, because it seems like most likely way for Baktrians to take.

This unit will defend against army that's behind us, streets are narrow here so one unit can cover it whole. We put one unit in reserve in case of "oh, shit".

Batkrians have mostly mercenaries which is not surprising since their towns are very small and they are not nomads (and can't recruit their elites in shitholes).

Walls are down and we shall se if I put our phalanx in right places.

It seems that I did.

One unit decided to go other way and we will have to keep an eye on them.

Army behind us finally moved.

And pokefest begins.

We have to use our "oh, shit" unit to cut off Baktrians that tries to surround us.

We engaged their main force, it's not very fair engagement though, their Phalangitai are simply much better.

Yeah, our pandotapoi are getting fucked up.

We lost Prophthasia. Sarpedon is already on his way and he won't stop until Baktrian are removed from the premises.

War with Baktria and threats from Carthage means that there will be no Elephant army to send to arabia. We need soldiers to fight wars that are worth fighting.

This city seems to be easier to defend so we may have a chance.

It took a lot of pokes to make Baktrians rout but we did it and Ubermanschen-Alexandria is saved.

Unfortunately we can't retrain our garrison here so it will fall after next Baktrian attack.

And revolting population won't help us defending it at all.

Our Parthian offensive is halted again because Ass-sack is depopulated (which means no reinforcements) and Nisa doesn't even have walls so we can't leave small garrison here and hope they will manage to keep it.

Population in Ubermanschen-Alexandria calmed down but Baktrians besieged it again.

Northern front looks much brighter though, Armenia is at war with Sauromatae and we can attempt to take under-defended Miskheta.

I decided to task son of our Basileus with taking Byzantion. We are at war with Epeirotes anyway so it's not like we are opening new front.

We have waves of unhapiness throught the empire. I will try to move our capital around to calm people down but some of our provinces may declare indepedence.

Byzantion is under siege, taking it will give us some additional shekel and it's still will be possible to defend whole asia minor and byzantion with one army.

Meanwhile we got attacked by Armenians and our army here is without a general becase I told him to go Armavir and stop revolts there.

There is lots of them, they have two beastly generals (and we are led by captain) so we are going to make our stand around this stone hill, pretty much camping on red line.

Our right flank routed georgians and none else here have balls to attack us, I decided to advance.

We managed to kill one armenian general (you can see how fucked up our formation there was by the fact that our kleurchoi killed him using sword).

One unit of phalangitai on our right go surrounded but I knew it could happen so we have Thorakitai in reserve.

Meanwhile armenian attack on our left run out of steam so we had a chance to un-fuck our formation.

Our right flank continue it's advance almost unopposed.

We have a chance to encircle large part of Armenian army here.

Armenians, seeing what's happening stopped attacking our left flank and looks like they are retreating.

Yup, they are.

Best thing is, Prodromoi managed to catch routing kinsmen cavalry and kill second armenian general.

ENSLAVE. Now we have to bring our general here from Armavir.

I decided to auto-resolve it because we can't save during enemy turn and I was afraid game might crash and we would have to redo two battles.

And we fucking won. I'm very surprised.

Gabai is under siege, we actually can completely lose east to Baktria. That's no end of the world because I prefere Baktria as main power in the east because we can clean the floor with their armies in open field battles (and that's not so true in case of Parthians). Sarpedon is reaching babylonia and I'm developing MIC's around Ekbatana and Susa so he should have steady stream of reinforcements.

Armenians are trying to take back Armavir with this tiny stack, it's not going to work especially since our army is near.

Ok, let's just auto-reslove it because there is no way I can win it myself anyway.

Yup, Ubermanschen-Alexandria is in Baktrian, dirty hands.

Terrain is great and Epeirotes are attacking in two waves. Kalinikos Syriakos got this shit.

We have their general surrounded and if he dies, this battle is over.

Kalinikos proved that he is true son of his father and good warrior (For now Sarpedon is heir of Arche Seleukeia but we are going to make Kalinikos heir because we are larping being kingdom and all that stuff).

Epeirotes infantry is in full flight and we just need to chase them down with cav so they won't fall back to byzantion.

Enslave! I would change name of Byzantion to "Kalinikia" but you can't change names of cities in EB because of campaign script running in background.

We finished bulding of our best possible MIC in Antiocheia. We can recruit armoured elephants...

And Hypaspistai. But we can't recruit Thorakitai Agematos Basilikou. I'v done some internet research and those guys are tied to Cataphracts reform. Who thought reform that requires you to lose two armies on fucking purpose was a good idea? You can't imagine my butthurt right now... you just can't. My butthurt is a legion.

Hurting butt aside, I think that recruiting some Hypaspistai makes a lot of sense for use since Seleucus was commander of Alexander's Hypaspistai and all that jazz.

Baktrians retreated from Gabai, that's unexpected but very good turn of events.

Also I decided to change our policy towards Babylon. It was our allied state so far but persian units we can recruit here are complete crap. I decided to fully integrate Babylon to Arche Selekeuia which will take shitton of time but will let us recruit our faction troops here.

With this hill, even divine intervention won't help them so reinforcements should not even bother coming here.

They are coming straight for the center so we can slightly reorganize our left flank.

Now we have to deal with Cats.

We basically swarmed them with everything we have, and it worked.

Our losses are acceptable and quite a lot of "dead" soldiers got "healed".

We have to enslave Hekatompylos because population is raging.
