Let's Play Unexplored: The Mithril Run
Let's raid Moria Moryondor! A RogueLike with a special LOTR mode. It's one of the three free DLCs.

    Artist: Donato Giancola.

Vote which character to play. Characters' starting gear are like in LOTR.
Halfling Rogue is OP so not available. Screenshots will be too dark with Frodo sneaking around backstabbing everyone as well. Sneaky bastard starts with an invisibility ring, I wonder what is the story behind it?

Dwarf is winner, gonna watch some LOTR first to get into the mood.

The Dwarf, An unExplored Journey, or Down and Up Again.

    Part 1.
    Show Spoiler

I, Gimpli the Dwarf begins my profitable adventure in the mines of Moria Moryondor, may my fortune from my plunder lead to an early retirement!

Although the dungeon is randomly generated, Mithril Run has a more fixed structure compared to the base game.

The mines are pitch black and I quickly lit my torch. Corpses litter the entrance, unlike them I will not die in this dark hole!

Map at the top left shows I am at The Dark Entrance with one level below me.
I have 2 rations which heal 10 HP over 10 secs and 3 healing potions which heals me fully.
I wear light chain mail, a special helmet which I refuse to take off and a cloak which lets me hide in the dark near walls.
I have 3 torches, some fint & steel to start fire, 2 throwing axes and my axe!

Weak poisonous spiders are my first enemy.

A goblin shows up, attracted to the sounds of my fighting.

He wields a sword and shield, but he is no match for a seasoned Dwarf fighter and my axe!

I looted his sword, shield and hard boiled leather armor which is a heavy armor. I can wear 1 light and 1 heavy armor at the same time. I swapped my cloak for the leather armor.
    He drops a key too.

Further in I find a barred door.

I fought weak beetles, creatures are afraid of pointy weapons aimed at them and this keeps them from attack you, mobs take damage just by touching pointy weapons like swords and spears, but not axes. Forgive me master for not using my axe!

Pulling a lever opens the barred door.

Further in a locked door which the goblin key opened.

Behind the door is the stairs down but I will clear this level first.

I light other light sources when I come across them. Coffins hold treasure sometimes, gold is better off with the living!

    A suspicious looking wall.

    A secret door!

A bright white Sprite is in the room, if you catch one with an empty bottle it will provide light, alas I have no empty bottle and I'm not about to waste a healing potion. I'll have to come back later.
The barrels have some rations, time for my second breakfast.

Inventory check before I advance to the next level.
    I have 7 rations & 3 healing potions.

    Map of The Dark Entrance.

Eew spider eggs, gonna kill them before them hatch!

A barred door, maybe if I can put a owl statue here the door will open.

    A bat?

A firebat? It lights on fire and dies in a fiery explosion.
Strange are the creatures here under the mountain.

Another new monster called a bloat.

It spews flammable gas that the brazier lights on fire. Yikes!
Best kill it away from fire.
I can collect some gas with an empty flask. Could be useful!

Found a stairs down, according to the map there are 2 different levels below us, let's search for the other stairs.

Nearly walked into this pressure plate trap before I detect it.

Pull this lever and a turret is deactivated.

The turret is found across the bridge.

    Another level activates a bridge.

A locked chest, if I have lockpicks I can pick it, maybe there is a key nearby.

A giant magical beetle crawls up from the ground, it shoots magic missiles and teleports next to me if I run away from it.
I stay close, dodging the missile and slay it. A fearsome beast!
A shield can deflect magic projectiles but I was too surprised to drop my torch to pull out my shield.

    A key!

It opens the chest and in it is an empty flask.

    Found the other stairs.

I backtrack up to The Dark Entrance and capture the Sprite in the empty flask.

2nd level cleared with 7 rations and 3 healing potions.
I have a flask with a Sprite. It is brighter than the usual Sprite in a flask. May it be a light to me in dark place, when all other lights go out.
I pick up a tool, it can be used to pry torches off walls & disarm traps and turrets.

    Map of The Abandoned Mines.
Going down one of the staircase.

Not long after entering The Lower Mines, I step on a trap that summons a cloud of bats!

I can keep them at bat by pointing my sword at them.

You can take down a few with a good swing!

Spiders scurry away from the extra bright flask of Sprite.

I spot foes and treasure behind a window.

These special plants give off light, I can even take them with me but they don't last long.

A pressure plate opens a door.

An unIDed potion. Purple background means unknown, blue is good, red is bad. I'll try to safely ID them later.

A key, the rock around me is iron ore that I can mine if I have a shovel.

    Hey a shovel!

Careful he is a big. They too run from the bright light.
    Also beneficial is misspelled.

    A room with gargoyle statues...

    The doors shuts behind me...

    I grab the treasure.

I pulled the lever which opened the door, as I was leaving a gargoyle attacks!

Gargoyles are weak against fire and I threw my torch at him many times. Little damage but it knocks him back allowing me to pick the torch up again and throw.

He drops some heavy stone armor and battle axe!

Reached the other side of the window.

I hug the walls looking for secrets and the walls give way before me!

Behind the walls is a Mithriil figurine worth 500 GP! I'M RICH!
I have to escape for it to count.
The 24 arrows in the chest will help immensely, there are foul creatures in the mines that are dangerous up close.

My loot so far. The Earth Sigil can be used to enchant normal gear at a forge.
I collected poison blood from spiders and coated my weapons with poison.
1 ration, 6 healing potions left. I got hurt as I was distracted taking pictures and healed with rations.

    Map of The Lower Mines.
Only way is back up, you can see the layout of the whole known dungeon at the top left.

The Maze is the center of Moryondor. Stairs lead up to The Great Hall and surface or down to The Underdark and Mithril mines.

    I can hear snoring.
Monsters can see, hear and smell me as well.

Looted another gargoyle room, this time I locked the gargoyles in after I escaped. HAHA!

Lots of goblins for me to kill.
Finally there is light on this level, with no need to carry a light source in my offhand and I equipped my shield. By blocking their weak attacks I can avoid damage.

Also, no using a light source means I can wear my cloak and hide and do some sneak attacks.

    Satisfying crunch with bodies flying!

They have a cave troll. That is unexpected, this will be a tough fight, what with goblins still running around.

I retreated and barred the door, the troll sniffs me from behind the door. When was the last time I bathed?
I should explored elsewhere for now.

Lots of gobs busy running around.

Hiding behind walls, I toss stuff making noise luring them near so I can surprise attack them. Muahahaha!
Beware! Those greedy gobs pick up stuff and use them.
I've tossed some gear down the holes so the gobs can't pick them up but those stuff do reappear at lower levels, I could be potentially arming mobs I'll be meeting later.

I tried sneak attacking with shortsword which does X3 damage compared to the usual X2 for most weapons.

By Durin's beard! While exploring, the bridge collapsed behind me stranding me.

I can jump off the chasm to the level below. But the shelf has a scroll I can use. It could be a teleport or descend scroll.

It is a teleportation scroll, and it brought me back to the gargoyle room!

I hid in the shadows, threw a dagger to distract the gargoyle guarding the door and escaped!

While wandering, I met the troll again! This path must lead behind the barred door.
    Time to kill it.

Trolls are good at sniffing me out, I hid and prepare to surprise attack it.

    Surprise!

Badly wounded, the troll spew acid at me, fearing for my gear I stripped and ran but I managed to dodge it.

Keeping my distance, I threw my poisoned weapons at it, forgetting that trolls regenerate, healing faster than the poison!

I rush in and finished it with my axe, I then drank it's blood healing a little of my wounds.
    Yuck!
I need a swig of some strong dwarven ale!

I continue killing the gobs, one armored gob survived a backstab by my shortsword, I might be better off using my axe!

It appears that the sneak attack multiplier is after armor deduction which makes the low dam high multiplier shortsword weak.

Found my 2nd owl key door, must be some nice loot behind that door.

    My haul so far.
1 ration, 6 healing potions left.
I'm going to start stashing items near the stairs.

    Map of The Maze.
The Underdark sounds dangerous, so I'm heading up to the Great Hall to gear up first.

The Great Hall is taken over by goblins! In a window of a room I spy a troll stomping and what appears to be a teleporter.

The goblins certainly have made themselves comfortable!
They shall feel the pain of invading dwarvern lands and my axe!

This room has a vent that releases flammable gas periodically, when the gas reaches the brazier it catches on fire. Anyone in it gets burnt as well.

Foul orcs in the next room!
There is a teleporter to the bottom left.

Rather than risk a fight, I lure the stupid creatures into the fire.
    Burn!

Orcs have their own armor, not as good as quality as Dwarf but they do offer some protection.
I drag the brazier out of the room as I do not want to set myself on fire in case I need to retreat.

The gas seeps into the next room which has another owl key door.

    Sleeping eh?

    Wake up sleepy head!

    Giant magical beetles again!
I use the barrels as cover.

    I found something.

4 pedestals, maybe the stone I found should be placed here but let's check the room to the left first.

These fellows shoot fire spells! Dark wizardry!

    Doorways provide cover.

By trial and error, I placed the golden diamond stone on the pedestals and the door opens!

A library, with many books and scrolls!

Finally! This owl figurine must open those owl key doors. I've came across 3 of those doors so far.

    Books contain useful information.

I've being keeping notes on my identified stuff.

Abilities are mostly tied to gear. Being Dwarf, I'm a bit slower than others.

Let's open up that owl door on this level.
    *rubs hands in anticipation*

    An armory!

A kingly gift on the floor!
It is worth 250 GP, if I get some Mithril ore I may be able to craft some myself.

After a player crafts his first Mithril Armor, 1 is unlocked and placed somewhere in the dungeon in future runs.

So many magical items, some may be cursed, I hope 1 of the scrolls is a scroll of detect magic.
I've explored this floor fully except for the teleporter and a locked door, instead of risking a teleport to the troll, I shall venture downwards to The Underdark.
6 rations and 7 healing potions remaining.

Some nice barrels near the stairs for me to stash. Thieving gobs don't take stuff in containers.

It's a very dark place, save for some poor crystal lights.
What other creatures are here besides goblins?

After clearing the immediate area I decide to read my unIDed scrolls, a scroll of detect magic will show me all magic on this level.

Arg, I read a scroll of pain which summons a phantom blade.

None of the scrolls aid me in identifying the magical items I've picked up, except for a scroll of enchant which I used on a magical bow, turns out to be a cursed bow which the enchant scroll uncursed.
I still have an enchant scroll left, this lets me risk wearing items which may be cursed.

In the dark I encountered another troll.

I placed a flask of sprite on the ground for light in the coming fight.

Wretched troll not only picked up my thrown weapons he also picked up the flask of sprite.
I killed him using bow and arrows.
    What's that sniffing noise?

    Incoming! 2 more trolls!

    Some desperate close range archery!

Remember that time Legolas killed a troll at close range in the mines of Moria?

    Victory!
    3 trolls in a row!

Tried using a magical long sword I have, turns out to be uncursed.

Fighting this goblin activates the sword's magical ability and tell me what it is. I don't have to kill 20 enemies with it, phew!

    A mediocre weapon.

    Compared to my axe!

Found the way down, I can smell mithril!

With the sword identified, I risk wearing a magical ring, it is not cursed as well.

Still lots of gobs on this level.

I found a pile of equipment, must have been thrown down by me when I was in the upper levels.

Spotted The Goblin King is in a room nearby, he didn't notice me.

    Wish he sings.

In another room I find 2 signs.

I bet this is referring to the special flask of sprite I'm holding, but I still need the light so I'm holding onto it for the moment.

A forge is in The Underdark, time to enchant my equipment.

Enchanting a battle axe with an earth sigil.

    Gives me a better axe!

I drank my unIDed potions, turns out most of them are good.

Buffed by the potions as you can see on the left, I decided to kill The Goblin King!

    The battle axe stuns him!

2 more swings and he is dead before he can recover.
    These potions are very nice!

Drops: a crown, a key, a magical long sword that glows with fire and another owl statue.

The ring I've been wearing was identified after some time and turns out to be a +1 Archery ring.

I went back up to The Maze and open the owl key door.

More loot, a potion of Life heals me fully and increases my maximum health.

I went further up back to the Great Hall and collect some flammable gas with my empty flasks.
I should have done this earlier and made the trolls fight easier.

    Map of The Underdark.
I have 4 rations, 1 life potion and 7 healing potions.

It glows so I can use it as a light source.

    A strange spider.

Avoid hitting in when it sparkles!

A door which the Goblin King's key unlocks.

Some treasure and stairs leading down.

Opening the chest awoke some giant beast with a tremor! Good thing it is outside the room!

I postpone mining mithril in favor of exploring the next level. Digging could attract dangers like that giant worm.
I wonder what lies below us beyond the stairs?
    3 rations, 7 healing & 2 life potions remaining.

Lots of Dwarf-eating fish. Dual-wielding swords make poking them easier.

Strange creatures are found flying in the depths.

Best avoid the monsters and just run and grab the loot.

Found a magical staff of blinking which teleports me a short distance.
Magic staves are rare in Middle Earth.

A gargoyle room in the depths guards a rare sigil.

Wardens spit poison gas, I hide underwater to avoid it. I can collect poison gas with an empty flask.

    Another gargoyle room.

With another rare sigil, I can make an bow of ice from this, useful against fire-based monsters.

    Finished all the rations.

On the way back up I encounter some goblins that I slew with 1 swing with my axe.

Out of my way! I have chores to do!

First, back to the last unlooted owl door using the key I found down in the flooded depths.

A magical bow and some treasure.

    Sounds good!

But I want another magical bow, so I forge one with ice magic!

This one looks useful against a certain foul creature of fire and shadow.

Next I went back to the mithril mines fighting creatures that have respawned.

With a shovel in one hand, I mined mithril, each piece is worth 25 gold.

My mining sometimes disturb monsters! Earth elementals appear. The Bow Of Despair is useful, it makes them afraid and unwilling to fight!

I found that it is safer to use a sword that can poke monsters that pop up in front of me when digging, giving me space to fight.

I mined over 20 mithril ores. Using my starting chainmail I forged another mithril shirt, worth 250 gold, much more than the ore. If I can find more chainmail I can make even more.
Usual equipment are worth nothing, even magical ones!

I went back to the room with the 2 signs that says 'Break the glass' & 'that holds the light' and broke my flask of sprite, freeing the sprite gave me 2 scrolls of enchant.
Scrolls of enchant can remove curse, upgrade equipment and restore charges to magical items.

I ascend back to The Great Hall and step in the teleporter, I appear next to an ugly troll!
He is easily dispatched by The Bow of Despair.

I picked up a key, the coffin in the troll room is too heavy to open.
Maybe I should lit the braziers?

A wraith rise up from the coffin!
I killed it with The Bow of Despair but it did not seem to be affected by despair, maybe undead are immune to it?

A magical axe was in the coffin, the wraith drop its greatsword. I don't think I should be wasting my scrolls on enchant on uncursing so I left them alone.

The troll key unlocks the remaining unExplored room in The Great Hall.

In it is the stairs to The Bridge of Khazad-dûm and exit.

    The final level.

The Bridge is crawling with goblins!

These feeble foes proof little challenge.

At a T-junction across a bridge I see Durin's Bane and a host of goblins!
The Balrog may proof too much of a challenge!

I took the left path and come to a bridge with the exit beyond.
Shall I leave or go back and kill the Balrog?

The Balrog has retreated, I shall kill the goblins first.
That flammable purple gas gives me an idea.
    First I light a torch.

Throw the lit torch near the gobs.

Lastly throw the flammable gas potions that I've collected from The Great Hall.

The Balrog is immune to fire and has a long range whip that explodes when striking!

But it is weak to cold, the Bow Of Cold that I forged hurts!
    You shall not pass!

I shot so many times I have to recharge the bow twice with scrolls of enchant. The bow will slowly recharge over time but that will take too long.
The Bow of Despair does little damage to the Balrog.

    Dips on this drops!

    Cool sword.

    Cooler whip!

I went back down to gather my loot and blew up and set some gobs on fire with the whip.

The exit bridge sways and collapses after me.

    My final haul.
Gold is sadly not carried over to subsequent Mithril Runs unlike the main game.
