Against all odds

Hold at all costs

BlG7E.jpg

Eventually a decisive victory was achieved over Curitiba, from where the encircled Brazilian forces retreated towards Desterro, and now completely surrounding them would be much simpler than before. Everything was being prepared to cut down even more the still numerically superior imperial army. Nevertheless, the casualties were growing up: countless thousands already gave their lives for the Riograndense Republic. Also, fortunately certain problems related to unfortunately needed budget cuts were over as well, and about time.

7mEgk.jpg

Over Santa Catarina, they at last achieved another victory in this 2nd War of the Farrapos as impressive as The Brazilian Slaughter in Mato Grosso during the 1st conflict, delivering devastating losses to the imperial forces. Yet, the war is very far from over, and they knew it.

A9slq.jpg

The cut downs of military once done to secure a better budget were proven unwise, and now, despite the opening phase of the war in their favor, their standing army will be expanded to its fullest, and even then it will remain far outnumbered by the Brazilian military, which reinforcements were bound to arrive to the front at any time.

LR2Z8.jpg

And when they did, the hopeful mood of the gauchos immediately died off. The massive Brazilian army marched towards Passo Fundo, and they knew they stood no chance against them were them to march there to attempt defending the province, specially as many of their brigades were right now understrength. Instead, every able-bodied man was summoned to rally at Porto Alegre, where they would, once the time comes, fight, and somehow, no matter how numberful the imperials are, they must win.

wAuaV.jpg

The successful occupation of Desterro was proven futile, Brazil still outrightly refusing a white peace and demanding unconditional surrender, which is completely out of question for the Republic. They can't just end in nothing after all their past victories, after all their past struggles. Bento Gonçalves, while Passo Fundo was about to fall into enemy hands, swore for his life he shall defend Porto Alegre to his last breath, as reinforcements were arriving to all the troops stationed in their capital, expecting the grim battle to come against the better preparing Brazilian forces.

cZpOn.jpg

Luckily, the resistance in Passo Fundo successfully bought enough time for enough brigades to be raised to negate the major numerical superiority of that Brazilian, but nevertheless, many of these were still fresh and undersupplied as they prepared themselves for a battle where any result other than victory will mean total defeat for Rio Grande do Sul. They had to hold Porto Alegre, they had to hold it at all costs, for they knew very well what was at stake. Even with the numerical imbalance temporarily corrected and the advantage of terrain, the Brazilian forces still had the upper hand because their army was made mostly of infantry, and in this new century, the kind of Cavalry Rio Grande do Sul packs is definitively much less capable than infantry in battle. Now, the most decisive battle of the entire war was coming.

UfC6a.jpg

A bold cavalry charge would prove itself decisive to turn the tide of the battle, allowing the less numberful Republican footsoldiers to emerge victorious and push back the massive infantry assault of Brazil, despite suffering heavy casualties in the process. Surrounding this now retreating army was not just important, but critical for Rio Grande do Sul to stand a chance, and thus, there was no time to celebrate this decisive victory, for the enemy army had to be routed as soon as possible, because they feared Brazil would eventually send even more armies south. Thus they marched towards Lajes in an attempt to crush the retreating enemy forces.

8lonB.jpg

The counter-offensive was only not disastrous because, despite running out of supplies, will and ammunition due to how little morale was left after countless hours of battle, they inflicted greater casualties upon the enemies, and upon this failed battle the enemy again advanced towards Porto Alegre, this time having no more than six thousand retreating soldiers to defend her until the reinforcements could arrive. They cannot fail!

maeY8.jpg

Facing a numerically superior army while exhausted, the defenders of Porto Alegre, during the first days of the battle, fought with great bravery as they hoped reinforcements would turn the tide of yet another desperate battle for survival. Although taking significant casualties, the royalists were clearly winning the battle and there was a doubt on whether they could hold long enough for the reinforcements to arrive or not, and if they didn't, then most strategists believed it would be all over for Rio Grande do Sul, and then there would be nothing left but a slow but certain defeat and capitulation.

dvp5n.jpg

It is over now. They were just too small to face a country as large as Brazil, all they gained was some time with their initial victory in the first of their wars, but now, there was nothing left. Some have futilely pledged to fight to death for the Republic, but, in the end, their sacrifices, the sacrifices of all those before them...

2XBQ5.jpg

Then, in 16th of April of 1843, a group of civilians who thought the Riograndense Republic was not sufficiently free, which once tried to peacefully promote reforms towards the abolition of slavery, universal suffrage, freedom of press among other ideals, seeing the imminent defeat of their nation, rose to arms against the Brazilian forces occupying Porto Alegre despite knowing how small their chances were, as they were outnumbered and lacked proper military training for such a feat. Nevertheless, the Brazilian forces over the province, although victorious, were weary, and immediately every Riograndense army was ordered to rally to Porto Alegre as soon as possible, in the hopes this event, a revolution inside a revolution, would turn the tables and save their young country from defeat, but first, one of the larger armies of the Republic desperatedly tried to prevent a twelve-thousand strong army from regrouping with the Brazilian forces at Porto Alegre, as together they would be nearly invincible.

YlO9l.jpg

They were stopped just time, and now, in a very daring, and arguably suicidal move, three thousand men led by Bento Gonçalves sneaked into Porto Alegre, trying to bypass the battle between the Jacobin revolutionaries and the winning Brazilian forces. Somehow, they managed to reach the center of the city while the rebels and Brazilian forces continued their battle, with one side clearly victorious.

Us0l8.jpg

The occupation force was exhausted, but those who managed to sneak through them were vastly outnumbered to a point their odds of holding on long enough for reinforcements were near impossible. Nevertheless, these three thousand men fought with a great valor worthy of comparisons with the three hundred spartans, for this could be their last chance to prevent a crushing defeat and turn the tides of the war, and thus the Third Battle of Porto Alegre began, with the gauchos outnumbered at nearly 10:1 during the first day.

Even during this challenging and difficult war, philosophy evolved, with a gaucho philosopher developing a new kind of Neokantian ideal which has among its ideas a concept crudely briefed by the equation: Thesis + Antithesis = Synthesis. Now, if Brazil is the Thesis, as the first one to emerge and Rio Grande do Sul the Antithesis in opposition to near everything it represents, what could be the Synthesis?

Luckily, the military leadership of the Republic has improved considerably now. If only they had an economy strong enough to keep their military budget always high even during peacetime...

kOerP.jpg

The defense of Porto Alegre by the three thousand gauchos was heroic, and even as the first reinforcements arrived, the odds remained against them, but they carried on, defining what would later be considered one of the most legendary battles ever fought in the history of the entire Latin America, "The Alamo" of Rio Grande do Sul so to speak, except they got no Kwanzania willing to intervene for their cause. They were on their own and thus the only outcome that could prevent a defeat that a few weeks ago seemed inevitable was to win this grueling battle.

DSUtq.jpg

Against all odds, not only they have won and secured Porto Alegre, despite vastly outnumbered, but they also have completely routed the army that attempted to occupy the city, delivering another devasting loss against the Brazilian army and guaranteeing the safety of their capital. However, their problems were very far from over, and where ironically the traitors saved the Republic, now they could as easily doom it to defeat, for were these rebels to occupy the country, they would completely ruin the odds of victory of the Republic to then later be easily crushed by Brazil. Reforms will come when the time is right, and now these Jacobins must be dealt with.

65rFP.jpg

However, Brazil continues to refuse peace despite all the devastating casualties they suffered so far. Thus the Riograndense Republic chooses to ignore the Jacobins for now and instead try to make the empire pay an even higher price in blood for their tyranny until the chaos, popular discontent and devastation convince them to accept peace.

AqatU.jpg

Their arrogance endless, they refused peace even after suffering another devastating defeat. After this, despite pressued by the threat of the Jacobins at home, Bento Gonçalves spoke clearly of how it is imperative for them to march and occupy Rio de Janeiro itself to make the point Brazil lost this war clearer, and as quickly as possible.

0RgOv.jpg

As they spreaded to begin occupations over Brazil, a small force advanced to meet Bento Gonçalves as his small force defiantly upon the very gates of the capital of Brazil. From near total defeat to this they have marched, and they never gave up, they never surrendered, no matter the odds.

:salute:

xe9x7.jpg

Some people began to claim Brazil is secretly using biological weapons to crush the Republic, because seriously, two Spanish Flu pandemics in less than five years? Now, there were also some German immigrants who had another idea even more far-fetched: that the Ashkenazi minority in Rio Grande do Sul is part of a huge Jewish cabal of "Elders of Zion" and they are secretly trying to create a super disease only Jews are immune to with the goal of wiping the "goyim dregs" from the planet. The arguably good thing about censorship of press is that tabloids and other questionable publications defending such claims as true cannot spread. What is next, claims that Rio Grande do Sul is a puppet of the Bavarian Illuminati?

jO9ho.jpg

The drafted peasants were called back, then mobilized again at Porto Alegre to hold the city against the traitors, as Passo Fundo already fell to these vile jacobins, who think beheading those who disagree with their views is a proper way of promoting DEMOCRACY rather than Islam. This left a much smaller army to occupy Brazil and keep their armies distracted.

ZTfn0.jpg

The Jacobins failed at Porto Alegre, while isolated Brazilian forces continued to be hunted down.

dptNy.jpg

Were them "victorious" against the legitimate Republic, they would not last even a day against the Brazilian armies. They did their part, involuntarily, to help Rio Grande do Sul turn the tide of the war during their finest hour, but apparently they are as willing to fight to the end for their misguided radicalism as those loyal to the Republic are, and thus they will have what their death wish concluded as soon as peace with Brazil can be achieved.

4EqzP.jpg

In September 2nd 1843, rumors were spreading of a new revolutionary movement in Brazil with the goal of violently overthrowing the monarchy growing stronger than ever after the tears of hundreds of thousands of orphans left to such misery for the cause of the ego of a self-proclaimed emperor, and that they planned to lauch a massive insurrection during the Brazilian independence day in the same week, while the Riograndense forces were preparing to march towards Rio De Janeiro itself, their occupations of adjacent territories nearly concluded. Only then, at last, the Brazilian government was willing to sign a white peace. Proceeding with the war was not wise for obvious reasons, including the diminishing financial reserves of the Republic due to the drain of a fully mobilized army on the coffers.

qqEoC.jpg

And thus after more than one year of a devastating conflict, marked by seemingly impossible victories and unremitting courage in face of the superiority of Brazilian forces, thanks to a second legendary and victorious War of the Farrapos, from where the tales of the brave stand of three thousand men led by Bento Gonçalves who sneaked into the middle of a battle between Jacobins and the vast Brazilian army shall never be forgotten, as never will all the heroes who fought incredibly and gave their lives for the Republic, there was peace again...

At least regarding foreign enemies, because Rio Grande do Sul now had a civil war against Jacobins to fight, and thus more sacrifices were yet to happen, and more blood will be shed again for the continued survival and integrity of the Republic.

iWSz2.jpg

Although they should actually be shunned for having no honor and cowering when they were called to help Rio Grande do Sul defend their sovereignty, having such alliances might be useful to buy some time and prevent a Third War of the Farrapos from happening as soon as the truce with Brazil is over.

25L7r.jpg

The traitors took over all of the western regions of the country,, and they were resolute on their next step. Without thought they marched against Porto Alegre, wanting to overthrow the existing government and establish a LIBERAL government on Rio Grande do Sul by force. Typically liberal...

mwABL.jpg

They were all crushed, save a few, as finally, to help a little in putting a definite end to these traitors, the army of the Riograndense Republic was vastly improved by recent advances in its organizational structure and tactical doctrines that increased its professional nature.

hsvew.jpg

Considering how likely it is for more wars to be fought, the decision to modernize firearms, which is about time considering how outdated flintlock rifles are, is taken. It is obvious that to ensure Rio Grande do Sul never again ends hanging on a thin thread over a razor edge as it did during the temporary fall of Porto Alegre, their army must be kept in the state-of-art, and Brazil, being even less literate, and not interested at doing the same massive investments Rio Grande do Sul is doing over education, plus lacking the same degree of plurality a DEMOCRACY will naturally have, is bound to become more and more backwards with time, and this may, eventually, combined with growing immigration, allow the Republic to, once the next war comes, end with a result far more favorable from the war than just another white peace delaying the inevitable next war.

xCPOt.jpg

January 22nd, 1844. It was only in this day that the country could have a collective breath of relief. The Brazilian Slaughtered to a point they were forced to give up their ambitions, the Jacobins crushed, yet their desires not, for it were not their ends that placed them at odds with the Republic, but their means, because eventually all of reforms they killed and died for shall happen anyway, and now finally there is peace again, at least for some years. The Second War of the Farrapos was even more dramatic and devastating than the first one, and was considered by many not only another conflict against all odds, but their finest hour, and the greatest military victory of Latin American history for them, while also, the greatest military disaster of Latin American history for Brazil. Like some say, freedom is not free, but these two wars have proven that the gauchos are ready to do whatever it takes to ensure their continued freedom, and that most importantly, they are capable of such, even outnumbered, even when all hope seems lost and capitulation is knocking on the door, they have never surrendered, and never will.

Revolution within a revolution

vcEZR.jpg

To further secure the future of Rio Grande do Sul, Chile also agrees to an alliance. Right now, a new war is ravaging over South America, and somehow Argentina lost their ground to Paraguay and Chile, and might end in a complicated situation despite having a larger army than both combined.

BcuHJ.jpg

Another separatist rose from tyrannical Mexico, only to become tyranny itself. May Yucatan be short lasted as they have proven themselves unable to respect fundamental liberties using thin pretexts to eradicate the democracy they once supposedly represented. "What else can be expected from beaners?", commented the liberal journalist Marcelo Leclerc upon hearing, to which another liberal, Fritz "The Nameless Prick" Kuhn, and also an Ukranistanian-descent gaucho Ivan "Metalcraze" Wasylyshyn heartily agreed while emphasizing the banality, shittiness and boredom of Mexico itself, and Yucatan in particular with its now proclaimed dictator Melcar too busy banging the bitches to give a fuck about politics.

:M

UCOw7.jpg

The second outbreak of Spanish flu devastated the country, but it was dying down, at last, after killing far more people than the two devastating wars the Republic fought for their freedom. Hopefully this would be the last of these epidemics, otherwise those claims about the government of Brazil and JEWS being involved in this will not look so far-fetched anymore.

C4xkV.jpg

1845 started with the full development of Neokantian Idealism among the gaucho philosophers, and also with more elections. The climate was much hotter this time, with the memory of the recent Jacobin uprising still fresh in the minds and hearts of the people, and many questioning the legitimacy of a democracy where most of the people don't have the right to vote. Some sought to pressure for political reforms peacefully, but others were gathering up, for no matter how many Jacobins die, their ideas are immortal.

wQp7L.jpg

Fortunately, in spite of the Jacobin uprising and of the devastation brought by the previous war, the election proceeded without problems, which was very fortunate, specially because there were certain parts of the Gaucho Party who were ready to intervene against freedom if things got too tense, giving to them the pretext they wanted, because their government was not particularly bright or love. Most of the factories they installed became unprofitable, draining on the coffers of the nation through subsidies many suspected that were reaching the pockets of corrupt politicians, and their opponents were throwing major accusations of corruption against the reactionaries as well.

371ZT.jpg

The opposition to the reactionaries became strong enough for the conservatives of the Republican Party to stand significant chances in these elections, and many former reactionaries realized the foolishness of their nostalgia, because unlike in other cases, life was not better back then, and a little enlightenment was all that was needed to reduce the reactionaries.

6a4AC.jpg

Despite knowing their odds weren't good, the reactionaries decided to let the election flow in the name of plurality, and formed a coalition with the Republican Party.

There were whispers of something big about to happen against the government, but the police couldn't really find any conclusive hits on what it was, where it would happen and most importantly, how many more Jacobins would rise.

CwbVd.jpg

A few weeks before the elections, the country erupted again in the flames of another revolution within the revolution, accusations of the conservatives frauding elections to prevent the LIBERALS from winning being only a pretext almost a hundred thousand revolutionaries took in arms intent on overthrowing what they considered a "false democracy" and establishing a freer Rio Grande do Sul. Bolstering reactionary feelings, many of these traitors were immigrants who imported with them their radical ideas, but the Republicans were set on their full citizenship policy, and would do whatever it takes to restore order now without compromising their fundamental values and policies.

Ll6L6.jpg

The Jacobins were driven out of the capital, but there were still many of them to put down, and despite having suffered heavy casualties, they again were resolute to fight to the death.

9Ru2g.jpg

Jacobins and the Brazilian monarchists. They knew that they didn't have the luxury to contemplate philosophy or to invest heavily in the lacking industrial and commercial fields right now. They had to ensure the technological superiority of their military forces and thus, because loading rifles through the muzzle was much slower, the development of rifles that could be loaded from behind would ensure that the Riograndense riflemen would have more shots per second, fundamental for those expected to face numerically superior forces in coming wars.

DUGwM.jpg

The first public schools of Rio Grande do Sul were established in 1845, further helping in the long road to achieve a literacy rate on par to that of the First World.

tDXxy.jpg

The Republican first minister is an old aristocrat, owner of a tobacco plantation and somewhat oblivious to industrialism. The rebels are about to be crushed, but their threat is far from over.

rFggC.jpg

Only by September the Jacobin revolution was crushed before it could ruin the stability, and most importantly, the prestige of the country. After this failed revolution, the reformist movement grew, and political groups were trying to raise public interest on pressuring the government to extend the voting franchise, give greater freedom of press, better rights for immigrants and all the other typical issues from the 19th century liberal agenda, that unlike the 21st century ones, didn't involve faggotry and dhimmitude.

ZUffb.jpg

The old aristocrat died in September 12th, at first with accusations the revolutionaries were behind it through poisoning or alike, but such claims were soon dismissed as it was concluded later he just died of old age, and thus a new man had to assume the role.

nC9DS.jpg

The Riograndense army is undergoing major improvements in training and equipment, so that once the next time comes, they will be far more prepared.

LMPsJ.jpg

:salute:

3DqhW.jpg

With full citizenship once again enacted, immigration is happening in an explosive pace, dozens of thousands choosing Rio Grande do Sul as their new home. Where Brazil has only modest population growths, Rio Grande do Sul is booming to such a point that, given a few more decades, they will become the most populous country of Latin America, and by extension, the most densely populated. A lot of Austrians, Hungarians and Czechs were coming among the immigration waves, but now there was slightly less multikult despite this massive immigration as assimilation proceeded at a decent pace.

ROYKd.jpg

In contrast with the masses of immigrants, the locals seem to not have much desire into raising large families, which riles up the reactionary Western Civilization Defense Squad, as usual.

F42uB.jpg

Their futile struggle continues through the beginning of 1846. Will there ever be peace for the country?

u18uS.jpg

Meanwhile, in Kwanzania, abolitionism is gradually growing stronger as a movement. As the gaucho reactionary Cleverson Marcos Blakemore commented: "If you let the congoids run free, don't cry once you see the machete-mutilated corpse of your wife raped and killed by them, only for the machete to hit you while you beg for mercy in the coming buttsex apocalypse. ITZ COMIN!"

Mg85m.jpg

The state-owned firearms company Taurus is becoming more efficient thanks to the war experiences of the Republic, if still unprofitable, although having their own manufactured firearms is important enough to subsidize them, and thus this company will never go under. It's funny how firearms aren't a luxury everyday need for every Amerikwan, when they definitively should be considered one and if they were such then firearms industry in America would probably be far more profitable than it is.

w2gpw.jpg

They never give up. They would stood more chances as a peaceful movement but no, they have to die gloriously for nothing, and so their wish shall be done.

(Forgot to take screenshots but a small but significant part of these rebels were TURKS. return to croatioa)

OzMWs.jpg

Sick of these rebels, the government decided to launch a crackdown on the movements associated with them, accusing them of being "thinly-veiled recruiting grounds for Jacobins", and hoping this would be over, after so many crushed rebellions, ironically far more than what Brazil faced this far. The price of being a democracy, perhaps, or of having a relatively more literate and conscious populace as well... or maybe the fact currently the voting franchise in Brazil is wider, despite Brazil being monarchy.

Nx896.jpg

Never change. Worried by such development, the country geared for the inevitable war, for they would not leave Bolivia to their own fate this time. Hoping that the two-front war would be the opportunity needed to achieve a devastating victory, they knew that peace was just temporary and, to secure their future, they had to crush the monarchy.

YXVkX.jpg

In July 2nd, 1848, Rio Grande do Sul reached the mark of 3 million inhabitants, and more and more were coming. Their rapid growth was their greatest hope, for with such, eventually they would be capable of raising and supporting an army powerful enough to secure their place in the sun and lasting peace for all time.

2wTeE.jpg

no-exit-libertarianism-anarchy-for-rich-people.gif

Hedonistic Denmarktopia becomes the home of a new movement: the anarcho-capitalists, who would eventually be known as well as the lolbertarians. Although they demanded a stateless society, in truth they didn't want for their megacorporations to share power with the government, they wanted for their megacorporations to become the government itself, and by consequence establishing a Corporate Totalitarian Dystopia, or... in less harsh words, a Bourgeois Dictatorship. Or perhaps Somalia.

:M

nIJmj.jpg

Religion and politics aren't good matches, and this idea grew stronger in Rio Grande do Sul, as secularization becomes a common political practice, further increasing the plurality of the Republic and its closeness to a better future.

GLfRM.jpg

Once there is time for celebrations, it will be done, but for now, it is best for everyone to stay sober as long as possible.

jfCg9.jpg

In 1849, new elections happened while the weaponry of the Riograndense soldiers was gradually being upgraded.

QhkiE.jpg

Another orderly election, despite recent Jacobin insurgencies, that seemingly died down, for now.

ts9uX.jpg

Also, as the difference in these elections, a lolbertarian party, the Partido Libertador, was founded, but nobody paid attention to their radical agenda, one that would definitively cause unemployment and other problems most people didn't want to have.

3DaDA.jpg

Nevertheless, the conservatives were winning elections mostly through issues rather than ideology, while the natural growth of liberalism also meant greater pressure for political reforms.

IGnrt.jpg

And with this growth of LIBERALS, the support for the ideal of universal suffrage has equally grown. What is next? Letting women vote?

:decline:

hb5PY.jpg

In the end, the conservatives won again, as another decade was coming to an end, a decade featured by a devastating conflict with Brazil, two pandemics of influenza and the rise of a revolution within the revolution in the war and flu-torn provinces of Rio Grande do Sul whose militant arm was defeated, but its political arm is far from defeated, and may yet achieve it objectives without the need of violence. How much has Rio Grande do Sul changed in this decade?

lh2q2.jpg

Definitively a lot, particularly on its capability of putting up a fight, which was the focus due to the ever present threat of Brazil, and after breech-loaded rifles were developed, they proceeded with the improvement of artillery because eventually they intended to deploy it in significant numbers. As for the details:

R676Y.jpg

The economy has improved considerably, in large part due to the massive population growth in these 10 years, and now, at least the army can be kept at maximum supply without a negative income, even if cuts on military spending are still needed during peacetime.

trMu5.jpg

The country is approaching 4 million inhabitants, and despite all the immigration, perhaps in part due to the four years of the Gaucho party, now Brazilians are a much more significant majority than before. With this massive population influx, the Republic is gradually growing strong enough to eventually openly challenge the monarchy, the gap in population between Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul becoming smaller every year, but this is not the time yet. A new immigration wave brought a lot of Italians to Rio Grande do Sul, including the music critic Lyric Suite, also part of the so called Western Civilization Defense Squad, while Krauts, Ukranians and Romanians follow as the largest ethnic minorities.

AUKg3.jpg

Industrialization is proceeding decently, if somewhat slow. Unfortunately, the once expected to be profitable cigarette factory ended nowhere thanks to the nonsensical lack of paper in the world market, and thus a cigar factory, which doesn't need paper, is probably a better idea although it requires cultural research that would not be welcome at this point.

cM8BW.jpg

The lack of craftsmen however is bound to end very soon, because the RGOs of Rio Grande do Sul are quickly approaching their maximum, with a growingly smaller need of workers in the fields bound to eventually lead to the formation of a large industrial worker class.

And thus the 1850s were beginning in a far different way than the 1840s. Half as populous as Brazil, far more industrialized and with a better educated population, Rio Grande do Sul now had many choices ahead which would define the futures of their state, of Brazil and of South America.

So what your plan for expansion? I assume you will be wanting to do that. Annex Uruguay?

No, they're going straight for their enemy once the opportunity comes, as in Brazil trying another landgrab against Bolivia, for example, until there is nothing left of monarchic Brazil but The Brazilian Slaughter. Besides, acquiring states costs much less infamy than annexation and with some prestige they can get claims to Santa Catarina, just north of them, which saves even more infamy. Once they control four states then the modded decision "Proclaim the Republic of Brazil" will become available, changing the name of their country and giving them cores over the rest of the country to speed up things.

And I may as well mod in later a decision regarding them becoming The Libertadores if a socialist party wins the elections and they are strong enough. Surely it would be as interesting as fighting for national unification with Krakow to start wars with France, UK and Netherlands for acquiring cores over the Guyanas regardless of how little sense it makes. Unless you think modding a "Form the Libertadores of America" decision giving them cores all over South Kwa is cheating and that I should just wait infamy go down and slowly acquire states, starting several wars over and over and over instead.

So, for someone who has never played Vicky II before, is the Pop mod recommended for a first playthrough?

Your first should go to vanilla, to get a sense of how truly awful vanilla is in comparison so that you may bitch about it at any time.

Pop mod should go right after.

To help bumping this to page 3, here a peek on the smallest minorities still numbering 1% or above in the demographics of Rio Grande do Sul by the beginning of the 1860s:

I'm not sure if it really works, but I always edit the game .exe using the CFF Explorer from Explorer Suite, going to the File Header -> Characteristics and adding "App can handle >2 GB address space".

For me, it worked and improved performance on every Paradox game, and also on Civilization IV

There's one thing APD actually makes slightly worse than in vanilla... War.

Basically, the issue is there only for one specific thing: By toning military tech from having a roflstomp level of increase each tier, you instead make Russia's (and China's) zergrush ridiculously overpowered, both ahistorically strong and gameplay-wise. Will probably be an issue with all mass armies. I'm going to try and see if I could whip up a modifier that could actually fix this (first idea depends on whether or not AHD can handle Military Tactics as a modifier effect, but the idea would be to give penalties to military tactics after a certain army size AND population).

I thought V2 patches toned down the massive and repeated rebels? Those seem like a lot, especially since you're a democracy.

They're pretty well-done in APD, don't happen very often. In fact, the ONLY AI country I've seen have massive rebellions is... Germany (who is somehow even more of a world punching bag in APD).

Anyway, whipped up first version of the sliding scale of horde nerf:

At 500 divisions, your army will start to get hit with penalties that increase every 50 additional divisions. You'll get slapped with -10% Organization, penalty to starting experience for units, additional 10% of supply consumption, -10% Leadership gain, and a -5% penalty to Army Tech research, but you also get +0.2 monthly Prestige. Every 50 divisions afterwards, up to 1000 divisions, means -2% Organization, +1% Supply Consumption, -2% Leadership gain, and a -1% penalty to Army Tech research (this one every 100 divisions) along with +0.05 monthly prestige.

Doing this through purely diplomatic means, without waging any war, except for a phony war with Jacobin rebels, was the greatest diplomatic achievement of 19th century History, as was convincing the Bear to not curbstomp them before they could conclude such. Funnily Finland is the only country that can achieve this without wars in APD.

Then they kept electing candidates from the only party that only allows Finns to vote(Residency)

:troll:

And Finland-dominated Scandinavia took a big slice of Central Africa later, consolidating their status as a newly established Great Power.

:M

Anyway, I think this is now in page 3, so update is coming

PS: There is also a "Form Greater Finland" decision, but for some reason it is unavailable to Democracies.

Also, having gotten ahead some more, I'd say there's one other thing that's wrong with APD:

They give wayyyyy too much leeway to Russia in regards to Great Wars. They were fucked without even losing WW1, currently actually losing lets them off EASIER than that. Similarly, Russia is far too stable, I haven't seen a single rebellion there during my entire campaign.
