CHAPTER 4 : TWO FACED FREAKS

Welcome back readers ! Tex found out Lisnky was working in a top secret project called Overlord. Was it this that got him killed ? We should find out. We're also going to spend some of that hard-earned money of ours...

Since they fought for the heart of the same woman, Klaus is another potential suspect for Linsky's murder. We should pay him a visit.

I see a gray haired man about 50 sitting at a large table. "Professor Klaus ?" The man looks up with a shocked look. "How did you find me ?", he says. "It's my business finding people". I give him my credentials and background on the Linsky case...

We ask him about himself :

What was your work at MTC ?

I was hired by MTC, which is the Management Training Center for Gideon Enterprises. They put me to work on a project called OVERLORD. I soon discovered that my work has nothing to do with management training.

What is this project about ?

I was told that Overlord was a project designed to enhance an executive's mental capacity and performance. But as the project progressed I grew suspicious. When I started asking questions, I was threatened. I figured it was time to go underground for a while. How the hell did you find me ?

Delores Lighbody pointed your whereabouts.

She dumped you over Carl Linsky, right ?

Carl and I used to work together, but we had a falling out over Ms. Lightbody. She was my chick and he took her away. He had been trying to get in touch with me, but I wouldn't return his calls. I was sorry to hear about his death.

Were you given access to the Nexus network ?

Do you still have your passcard ?

Yes. Here, take it, maybe you can get to the bottom of this.

He handed us over his GREEN passcard. Nice.

These passwords seem so fitting, it's uncanny.

So, we were right about those passwords !


Before we move on, let's have a look at another way of making money. In the manual you can find coordinates for locations where you can go bounty hunting :

When you get there, you enter the usual combat mode and if you reach the end, you earn some money.

I'm too old for this shit.


Frankly, we shouldn't waste our time with this crap. It's a waste of precious ammo, since these are more difficult than the normal combat sequences, and we can earn enough money by pawning stolen *found* goods.

Next stop, the mansion of J. Saint Gideon :

I'm ushered into the den. Mr. Gideon is intently studying his chess board. He seems oblivious to me (Either that or he's asleep). The guy's old. I mean ancient. But he must be a big wheel because there's a picture on the wall of him receiving an award from President Michael J. Fox. I give him some background information on the Lisnky case, and it seems to pique his curiosity.

It seems Michael J. Fox finally put the Delorean to some good use. We ask Gideon about Linsky :

Tell me about yourself Mr. Gideon.

I feel I've been quite successful in life. Before I was in the business world, I was head of British intelligence. After that I founded Gideon and developed new ways of helping the government. Schimming sees Gideon as just business. I looked at the company as an institution, protecting our way of life.

What do you think of Schimming ?

Schimming forced me out of my own company. He's ruthless and totally unethical. He'll pay for that someday.

What's the deal with MTC corp ?

I've heard there is something unusual going on at MTC. If there is, I'm sure Schimming is behind it. That man is dangerous.

Do you know of a project called "Overlord" ?

Overlord ? I'm sure I've never heard that before.


I don't think he's telling us the whole truth, but we can't get anything else from him now. Anyway, it's about time we met with Mr. Sonny Fletcher...

The stairwell is dark, with garbage and old newspapers strewn everywhere. I find apartment 307 and knock on the door. Fletcher answers with the disposition of an untipped waiter. I tell him I'm working for Sylvia Linsky, and he tells me to come inside.

The room id cramped and confining. The furniture is cheap and the upholstery is threadbare. A portable black and white TV is on a small table blaring the sound of Lifestyles of the Incredibly Rich, Lucky, Healthy and Famous...

We inquire about himself :

What work were you doing for Carl Linsky ?

Ok, I'll tell you what I know. Linsky hired me to check out a corporation called MTC. He had been hired to do research into increasing a person's mental abilities. As the work progressed however, he realized they had different intentions.

What did you find out ?

When I started investigating into MTC, I received threats on my life and was even shot a few times. I tried to warn the professor, but it was too late. I think they iced him, but I have no idea how they did it.

Ok. About a year ago, MTC started hiring scientists. Most employees were not even aware this was going on. Rumor has it that the Scientists were hired to work on secret project called OVERLORD. If you want any more info on MTC you should ask Wanda Peck.

Nexus is the computer Linsky was given by MTC to work on Overlord. His terminal was part of a network. It required a passcard and a password. He wanted me to get hold of all the other scientists' passwords and passcards. He believed there were 8 scientists working on the Nexus computer system.

Why was he looking for the passcards and the passwords ?

Professor Linsky said the Nexus passcards and passwords were vital to stopping the Overlord Project. I was hired to help him find them. I could give you Linky's passcard and password... for the right price.

I already have them both. So... FUCK YOU VERY MUCH, Fletcher.

Larry Hammond wanted me to do some research on that. The Overlord project was developed 50 years ago in England when Scientists began work on a mental ability booster.

Several scientists tried the experiment on themselves, and at first it worked. By stimulating untapped areas of the mind, they increased their IQs by 15-25%. But they also found they were extremely susceptible to suggestion. Commands given through the computer would be followed without question.

Hmmm, some things are starting to make sense...

Many of the scientists developed severe cases of psychosis. Some committed suicide, and others died under mysterious circumstances.

Well, that sure was enlightening. I'm also looking for a former MTC employee called Larry Hammond.

Hammond ? He's a brilliant computer specialist who has done some work for MTC. He was concerned about some project. Ask a guy named Ron Meat where to find him.

And where can I get hold of this Ron Meat ?

Say, recently I've been coming across that new political party called "Law and Order". What you've got on them ?

Information on these boys is gonna cost you. I'm taking a big risk saying anything about them.

The scariest part is that they're becoming a powerful political force. They've got friends in the Legislature, Mayor's Office and Police Force. You need to talk to Larry Hammond. Look for Ron Meat to find Larry.

What do you know of their leader, Knott ?

He's quite the mystery man. He controls much of the action on the city, but he's hard to find. I don't think he's looking for publicity or notoriety. He wants to control things from the shadows.


So we need to speak to this Ron Meat. It seems we'll have to resort to Lee once again...

At last we can get to Larry Hammond, the programmer. I hope he's worth all the fuss.

This is where most of the unfortunate individuals live who suffered severe damage from nuclear radiation. Many of their offspring suffering genetic damage resulting in some rather grotesque mutations. Most were treated as outcasts and were forced into this community.

I step through a partially open doorway into a large room. I see several large mutants, and none of them look too happy to see me. "I'm looking for Larry Hammond" I say quickly. A fellow steps forwards. He's about 30 and looks like he's got a serious grudge against the world (some people are so ungrateful for extra blessings... at least he was born with all his vital organs inside his body).

About a year ago, TOM GRIFFITH, hired me to design a computer for the Overlord project. They also wanted eight access terminals.

A colleague of mine, Cal Davis. He told me that he had been hired by MTC to do research on controlling human behavior through direct brain stimulation

What was their goal ?

When I started asking questions, they told me it was none of my business. When I read that Davis had been killed, I decided to go into hiding.

Is there a way to stop Overlord ?

You'll have to get to the main computer and destroy the satellite. To gain access to the destruct sequence, you'll need all eight passcards and passwords. Each scientist involved with the project has one.

Have YOU got one ?

Yes, the GREY passcard. But it was stolen by members of the Law and Order party. My password is KING. To get the rest of them you'll have to find each of the scientists working on the project.

And then what ?

Once you gather all the cards you'll need to find the main computer to use them. I don't know where it is and other than Cal Davis I don't know any of the names of the remaining 6 scientists.

Who would know their names ?

If I were you I'd start with the accounting people at Gideon : Jerome Milbourne, Ed Bradley and Arnold Dweeb They might have names of the people that received checks from MTC.

Overlord is the continuation of a project that was attempted in England 50 years ago and failed. Now with new technology, they are attempting to control the actions of an individual through microchips and satellite transmissions.

England huh ? Wasn't Gideon a former British intelligence agent ?

I know he hates freaks, but that's about it. When I did work for Gideon, I saw him and Frank Schimming together on occasion, discussing "business".

What kind of a guy is Frank Schimming ?

I met him once before he was president, and he seemed like the type of person who would enjoy pulling the wings off flies.

Where I can find those accountants you mentioned ?

I know only Ed Bradley, he's at NC 7312. As for Arnold Dweeb, if you find him keep an eye on him, He's slippery. If he pats you in the back he's trying to get you to cough up something.

CHAPTER 5 : WE ARE WATCHING YOU

The conspiracy is finally getting clearer. Unfortunately we still can't prove if Linsky was murdered, or not. What we do know is:

• Linsky and many other scientists were working for MTC corporation on a project called "Overlord".
• They were told that Overlord was about increasing human intelligence, but it turned out it can also be used for mind control.
• Linsky was not the only scientist on the project that died under mysterious circumstances, we know of at least one more.
• In order to shut down Overlord, you need to collect all the network passcards and passwords of the scientist and use them on the main server.
• The political movement Law and Order seems to have interest on the project. They've already stolen one of the passcards...

Mr. Schimming is a hard nosed businessman. He's done an excellent job and I share his ideals.

So now we know how to get to the beach house. Searching the trash reveals another paper :

CHAPTER 6 : BRAINS MELTING

Recently we've been investigating MTC personnel. Ron Morgan --scientist, playboy, rich bastard-- has fallen onto our radar. We'll continue digging his dirt.

We found a property deed in his house, that will be our next destination :

We check out the label on the third switch :

Security systems in the future are ingenious. After disabling the alarm we uncover a hidden safe by pulling the second switch. Unfortunately it's locked so we move on to search the rest of the place. On top of the fridge something catches our eye :

We proceed to rampage the fridge. Hey, there's some frozen pizza inside !

We chunk it down and wash it with an old can of juice, when suddenly, we choke on something :

Ahh, it was a clever hiding place for the safe key, but I guess Morgan never took into consideration how much of a pig Tex can be... Inside the safe we find phat loot.

We confiscate the dough and then we have a look at the fish tank.

The passcard ! I must... grab it...

Ouch ! We must find a way to get hold of that card. At the base of the tank there's a book about piranha :

...I open the book and read that piranha make lousy companions and are untrustworthy babysitters for children and small pets.

We continue to check for ingeniously hidden compartments and we strike gold :

We'll have to find some other way to move the vine. We turn our gaze to the protective chamber that lies in the middle of the cave :

Hmmm, there's a key and a vial in there. The vial is labeled "Nerve Agent".


This could be important. We try to grab it with the mechanical arms :

SHIT ! The chamber has been sealed and the nerve agent is loose !

That's some ingenious Lab security, if I may say so. Nerve agent is loose ? Seal the lab and kill the stupid scientists.

Finding the button that opens the door isn't easy. We have to actually move the stalagmite...

Pushing the button leads to freedom :

We wait for a bit for the nerve agent to dissolve into the atmosphere, and we head back inside. This time we pick up the key.

We turn it off and proceed to check out the cabinet.

The doors are stuck from rust, but using the 3-1 OIL that we found in Linsky's lab, we're able to get it open. Inside we find more goodies :

Yeah, the fact that you need to take notes adds to the enjoyment. The way the game is structured with a multitudes of contacts and a lot of legwork, helps in this regard.
