I was chatting with Raapys about a really cool looking adventure from the 90s Obsidian.

I barely remember playing it at my friend's house. It has a really well done Terry Gilliam aesthetic, and some difficult puzzles if I remember correctly. I wish I could write more about it, but I think it's been too long since I played it last.

There is a review here: http://www.tap-repeatedly.com/Reviews/Obsidian/Obsidian.shtml

Some selected screenshots:

A guide that supposedly lets you run the game on modern OSes: http://archive.adventuregamers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=600049

Sadly, it seems not many people care any more. It only has a paltry 380 votes on the GOG community wishlist.

What old games do you wish more people remembered and talked about?

Cool stuff tuluse

Dark Earth.

The setting is a cool post-apoc steam punk and it has C&C that (in my mind) rivals with Deus Ex, despite being very linear.
You could dispose of important characters during different stages of the game with significant consequences.
It was very cool to find out that
Zed
could turn against you if you played a certain way.
I really enjoyed the melee combat, although i have read here that it was regarded as flawed. I have the impression that if you took the time to master it, it could become very enjoyable.

You can vote on it on GOG as well.

While typing this i found this LP by ghostdog.

Chronomaster (1995)

A somewhat forgotten adventure game, co-written and designed by one of my favorite writers, Roger Zelazny, so I just had to check it out. And damn what a unique title it is. Great story, somewhat non-linear, multiple solutions to some puzzles, fucking great. Well, it also has its problems. The interface is clunky, the 3D renders aren't that eye-pleasing today and it can be a pretty hard game as each pocket universe you visit has its own laws of physics. But that's also the beauty of it since all these universes are ingeniously crafted. Navigating the UI and trying to figure out the quirks of each place can be a bit frustrating, but stick with it and you'll be rewarded.

I can name a few of these, but I'm gonna start with Dr. Drago's Madcap Chase.

Imagine a game of Monopoly for 2-8 players, except the gameboard is all of Europe instead of going round and round in circles. To add insult to injury, a feature is added where one player will be bleeding money by being stuck with Dr. Drago, and the best way to get rid of him is to stick him on the back of another player.

It's a hot-seat multiplayer game where you'll be knifing your friends in the back before they do the same to you.

There was rather unique graphic adventure game loosely based on Batman Returns. It had gorgeous art, animation and music. Yes, there were big problems with pacing and combat, moreover, it didn't pose serious challenge for any non brain-dead player, but still IMO it's the only Batman game which successfully caught detective aspect of main character.

Imo Zanzarah looks like less gay pokemon.

Futuristic Desert Strike clone produced by a Potatofuckistan dev.

Klingon Academy, very cool space combat game. I don't understand why it wasn't more popular. I wish gog would release it since it's a bitch to get it to work on modern systems.

D/Generation, fun and original early 1990's puzzle/action/adventure game. Very rarely mentioned anywhere.

Archimedean Dynasty, Privateer clone with submarines.

Nowadays, yes. I recall a couple of computer mags that were raving over this game 20+ years ago, to the point that it made their Top 50 lists for a few years.

I don't remember anyone raving about in the 90's (magazines or IRL), maybe it just wasn't popular in Poland or something (or my memory is shit).

I've long hoped some crazy studio would pick this series up and made a sequel with all the improvements it needs...

Old school adventure (inventory and verbs) You play a funny antihero and the games are set in a cyberpunk-ish future.

Birthright Gorgons Alliance, one of my all time favorite games, mix of brilliant grand strategy, shitty tactical combat, and mediocre RPG.

Cavewars, unjustly forgotten 4x strategy. Game features really diverse choice of races, each one having a different feel and playstyle to it. Really complex game that should be a must play for every 4x lover.

Missionforce Cyberstorm, great tactical game with lots of mech customization.

Game has a quite a dark tone and there are really interesting story notes that give insight at the setting and your own situation. In the game you have Bioderms (artificially created humanoids) operating your mechs, they have expiration date of few months depending on their quality. If killed in combat or "recycled" for money you get a nice animation for each one.

Redline, pretty sweet mixture of fast-paced FPS and arcade car combat. Cool post-apocalyptic aesthetics and atmosphere, pretty large levels that mostly strike a good balance between FPS and vehicle action. Missions are also pretty varied, both with unique objectives and different environments, so game never gets samey. Car handling is adequate, could have been better but it won't cause too much annoyance with exception of situations where enemy vehicles are equipped with particularly overpowered weapons that require some high speed missile dodging.
I actually tried to replay it recently (Steam version, GOG one is apparently pretty much identical), had to stop early on due to abysmal performance. Others might have more luck than me, game is definitely worth playing if you can get it to run properly.

Here's another one, Igor: Objective Uikokahonia. By Spanish studio Pendulo, it also functions with verbs and inventory.

If I remember correctly this one has some good, dry humor.

ZPC aka Zero Population Count

A interesting shooter with cool comic book feel to it, interesting story where you play a some kind of God who awakes from long sleep and finds dystopian world whose rulers oppresses your worshipers. Game has few problems, boring weapons (actually its one weapon which can choose different attack mods like in Hard Reset), little diversity with enemies and map design is all over the place. Pretty much everything that really matters for a good shooter is underwhelming but the story and atmosphere is really good.

Powerslave

In a time when it looked like a new fps is released every month there was Powerslave. A decent shooter with decent weapons, decent enemies and decent map design, nothing special or really original but still fun and it had one big redeeming feature, you could use M fucking 60 in game. M60 is one of the most coolest weapons ever made and its disgrace its not featured in every single FPS ever made, and yes even games like Heretic or Witchaven would be inclined with it. So yeah mediocre but fun game.

War Wind

Before Starcraft there was a RTS that had 4 unique races, and the name of that game was 7th Legion, just kidding that game was shit unlike War Wind.

War Wind featured 4 races each with unique units and buildings. The gameplay was quite different to any other RTS out there, while you could build buildings and recruit units that was where all similarities ended. The game had really low amount of resources both for building buildings and weapons also recruits were every limited so you needed to be extra careful how to use them. Missions were like puzzles and often you had only one way of solving them, it would be pretty fair to say its like a combination of Commandos and Warcraft. There was also a sequel that made missions much more open and even had some c&c in the story.

Interstate'76 - vehicular combat game located in a alternative history.

Surprisingly for a driving game this one just oozes with '70 atmosphere (borderline blaxploitation) and the story is not bad either.

Also driving simulation is exceptional because the guy who wrote the engine has used to work for military simulators.

Civil War Generals 2

The best civil war game ever made and one of my favorite strategy games. The best part of it is how results of one battle can influence next one, so you can win series of battles and attack Washington with rebels. Also your and enemies army strength is modified by casualties from previous battles.

Arcatera: The Dark Brotherhood

An mix of RPG and adventure game, if you played Quest for Glory you will be right at home. Like Quest for Glory 5 game has great looking prerendered backgrounds only unlike that game Arcateras characters are pretty poorly made, appearance wise they are acceptable but movement is horrible. At start you choose one of four characters each one with its own starting plot (cant really recall the plot), later you can find and recruit other characters, the game is pretty non linear so you can explore city and surroundings at will. Combat is horrible, pretty much consist of clicking on enemy and then praying to God you win. One thing I really liked was narration you get while finishing some plot points which I found pretty nice. I didnt finish the game since it always crashed on one point, but until that I did enjoyed the game despite many faults.

Montezuma's Return

It is a sequel to 2d platformer Montezuma's Revenge, ten years later they make a sequel thats 3d first person game. Probably because they thought FPS are in and making a game like that its the only way to make a profit. While looking like a FPS the game is actually focused on solving puzzles so its more like Portal then Doom. There is some combat that its not really good and feels more like its put there to appeal to FPS crowd. Still its a really fun game and well worth playing.

If couchpotato worked for the Codex this would be news already:

Night Dive will remake Powerslave and Turok
http://techraptor.net/content/interview-man-rebuilding-powerslave
https://powerslaveex.wordpress.com/

TR: After Powerslave EX, are you going to try your hand at remaking other shooters?
Kaiser: I was originally working on remaking N64 Turok (called Turok EX) but it got put off to the side. Since now Night Dive Studios has picked up the rights to re-release it, Turok EX will resume development later this year. By the way, I’ve also done work with Night Dive by re-releasing Strife, which was another reverse-engineering project that me and a friend worked on back in 2010.
Aside from that, I am not sure if there’s any other shooters I plan on remaking. I’ve been tempted to look into Blood but I am quite wary of the many toes that I could potentially be stepping on. Particularly Atari’s toes.

I remember playing the demo of this game very long time ago and very much enjoying it. To my disappointment I was never able to get a working copy of it, even my pirates never heard of it. The game plays similar to MDK only giving much more freedom to roam the areas. The demo I played put the player in a middle of a military base where you could explore at will while fighting bunch of enemies.
