Welcome and thank for your vote.
However, more than high fantasy the reference for this LP is Howard's work, even if demons and gods make their appearance this doesn't mean that they rule the day, also, I thought that maybe Players would have been interested in becoming a bloodthirsty barbarian who sacrifice young virgins to the nether gods.
And just to clarify, for the non initiated, in Howard's work the struggle between the Serpent and Man is more about conflicting species than good and evil in the usual sense.

    PS:
While we are at it, Wulfen's thread is open to vote too, just saying. :M

Why on Earth would we want to ally with the Serpent? Power? Conquest? We will have all that. Just rejecting the ancients' way doesnt mean we will fully capitulate to ancients' enemy. Fallen into their grasp is just the same as accept the ancient way, though to the opposite extreme.

No no, we are not the hidebound conservative that fight/surrender to the Serpent. We are the new blood that will find another road.

And of course we are not the teenager acting rashly, either. before we know what we are doing, acting extreme might well get us killed.

    Wake up, you!

I'm kind of hoping that we loose our soul and have to journey far to the south into the heart of Stygia in order to wrest it from the grasp of some foul sorcerer.

    C, is my choice.

B would be Cliché as it would conveniently setup the "Big Bad" for the rest of the series...

Seeing how the vote is tight I will wait a little more, in the meanwhile here's a bonus chapter depicting what would have happened if you had chose to accept your ancestral heritage.

    The Words of Man

After hearing the plea myriads of thoughts occupied the mind of the young Cimmerian, he could feel a strange sense of kinship and alienation in the presence of the king while an unknown sensation made his blood rush trough his veins with a keen sense of anticipation and hesitation, the deafening tumult of his heart was rumbling in his ears when finally he proudly exclaimed:
"I can feel it, I can feel it screaming in my blood, the call that maintained me awake at night, the longing that was my companion in the far mountain walks, the urge during the hunts, the heritage of thou hath spoketh is my utmost desire, I full accept it thus is my honor as Kairn son of Dhurgal."

The response seemed to inject a new vitality in the king's corporeal apparition, two large hands hard as iron come forth laying on his shoulders.
    Gravely the king spoke.
"Allow me to bestow upon you the words that are the Serpent's bane, they will dispel any illusion that its magic can cast upon man and guard your soul against its foul touch. These words are old as Man, and beyond, they are now nothing more than a mere echo, but only man born of man can pronounce them while the accursed sons of the snake and their followers cannot."
The face of the king slowly lowered towards him as brought down by the weight of the ages, then, he whispered this words in Kairn' ear:
    "Ka......nama..........kaa..........lajerama"

Hearing this the recondite memories of his race awakened, reverberating trough all his body and soul, precipitating him in a bottomless darkness.

The seething primordial chaos was laid bare before his very eyes, an ever changing explosion of creativity which seemingly devoured itself endlessly.
Time passed, even if there was no time, and the light appeared with the thunderous sound of words that never had been pronounced before, and never will be again.
The amorphous chaos wiggled as withered away when the fiery fires of creation were alighted, the eons passed until finally the newborn Earth emerged from the boiling plasma that originated the solar system.

With the passing ages the primeval life developed on the bottom of the oceans until it abandoned the seas for the dry land starting the cycle of evolution.
And then, from the farthest corners of the universe, they came, with their detestable corruption, the abominations without name, form, shape or substance, taking home on the young planet, giving raise to a soulless travesty mocking real life.
For unimaginable ages they inhabited the Earth, until a cosmic cataclysm put an end to that blasphemy, the survivors crawled inside the bowels of earth searching refuge.

Once again life emerged from the waters and colonized the fertile lands, and so the raise of Man began, from ape to the first civilizations of the stone age, countless empires succeeded each other, until they reached their peak, great was their knowledge of science and magic, but so was their arrogance, in an extreme act of foolishness they opened the doors for the Serpent and its offspring that crawled out from the recondite recesses of earth, thus the fight began.

Finally the regressed Man claimed his victory on the ruins of his ancient splendor.
Again empires and civilizations raised and thrived, the old fight all but forgotten, the battle continued in the shadows, through sorcery and treason, poison and deception, until a new catastrophe sunk the proud continent of Atlantis.

Kairn saw the survivors disperse for all the Earth, he followed them as tribes of nomads until they settled in the lands of the northeast that will become known as Cimmeria.

From the light of the pale sun invading the dwelling Kairn realized that was high noon, slowly he raised himself from the ground where he was laying until that moment.
The shaman looked at him with inscrutable eyes.
"Well awakened Kairn son of Dhurgal, go back to your father, and join him in the warriors' council."

At this words a grin of ferocious satisfaction appeared on Kairn's face as he walked towards the village.

[Missing part with the council's decisions and choices for the player, maybe added in the future.]

    Reference for this chapter:
    The Shadow Kingdom

There's not big bad here, just a bunch of Necromancers up to no good, barbarian hordes of various genre, conflicting empires, innumerable wars here and there, demons and other amenities scattered around the entire world. :M

    The Poison of the Serpent

BHO is tu is Buachiaill thar an treuid

Kairn struggled against the ghastly oppression of his chest and raised his head.
"Empty promises of a long fallen god, you are all but a mere shade that lurks in the shadow of your old enemies."
After a pause to caught breath he added with a snarl:
    "Like a worm."

Iomain fein shin do chleidh ’s do chaimir

The silhouette of the serpent waved and disappeared in the fall of sparkles tat exploded in Kairn's eyes, now on the brink of losing consciousness definitively.

Seun sinn fo do bhrot riomhach reidh

Grasping air with great gulps the son of the blacksmith continued to mock the serpent.
"I am not a child that could be swayed by empty boasts and bragging, begone lurid larva."

A Sgeith dhidinn, dion ri ’r mairionn.

A frightening sound like thousands of rusty blades grinding on each other echoed in Kairn's mind, the serpent was laughing.
"Daring words young Cimmerian, but you can't hide you dread and misgiving from me, I will not easily defied as that rotten corpse."

    Bi-sa do chlaidheamh cruaidh, cosgarra

Appealing to the reserves of vitality of his barbarian nature Kairn spit in the direction of the serpent.

Chon sinne dhion a irinn arrais

It was as earth itself had swallowed the Cimmerian, he felt the dire touch of dead roots and the fetor of the grave while thick layers of darkness engulfed him.

Bho fhigeirich is bho fheadaine frinne fuara

It was as passing trough dead aeons of the past.
Now the lost Acheron was erecting its blasphemous altars, witnessing the obscene rituals performed there would have destroyed the mind of a civilized person, but Kairn's barbaric mind was too primitive for losing itself so easily, unnhindered by hypocrisy and misconceptions.

’S bho dheathach ruadh an aigeil.

Now Acheron fell, destroyed by the savage hordes of the north, in which Kairn recognized the descendants of the Atlanteans, and precursors of the Cimmerians.
The hatred of the serpent was a physical presence now, almost unbearable.
The survivors of the accursed kingdom sought refuge in the lands were the pyramids of Stygia are now, may them conceal forever the abominations they shelter.

M’ anam an urrachd an Ard Righ

Kairn felt as his long fall had almost reached its end, below him he could glimpse the true body of the serpent unwind, rising up to reach with his fangs the Cimmerian.
It was as his very soul was torn apart while his body was burning with molten lava running through his veins.

Crom murrach an comhdhail m’ anama.

Emerging from a blessed oblivion Kairn raised up, a cold sweat covered his entire body.
The shaman looked at him with hard cold eyes.
"After all you do know fear and uncertainty son of Dhurgal."

With contempt the shaman addressed Kairn:
"The wards I erected for you were not enough to protect you from your own weakness, be thankful that Crom heed my prayer young fool."

The shaman continued with a grave voice:
"Now you have been tainted by the serpent, from now on you are taboo for the entire tribe."

At this words Kairn clenched his fists in rage.
That would have meant to become a ghost among his own people, no one could have spoke to him or sheltered him, from that moment he would have been only allowed to live in the outskirts of the village fending for himself.
The only thing reminding his appurtenance would have been the right to participate in war.
"How, how can I lift the curse placed upon me?"
He asked with a trembling voice, denoting his repressed fury.

With glacial eyes the shaman replied:
"The only way I know is to consecrate yourself to Crom, but beware, if you pass the test you will be bound to honor him with the proper rituals and abide to his rules unquestionably."

"Are you ready for it, son of the blacksmith?"

    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

A)Accept your fate and live as a pariah in your own village.

B)Consecrate yourself to Crom, and swear eternal allegiance to him.

C)Kill the shaman, no one will know what happened if you concoct a good enough story, Cimmerians are superstitious people.

D)Flee the village after procuring yourself some weapon and food.
You will find you own way to deal with this.
Possible destinations that Kairn can reach from his village:
N)Vanhaeim and Asgard in the north.(this option has won)
W)The lands of the picts in the west.
    S)Aquilonia in the south

If you chose D add the cardinal to your vote, all the Ds will be count as one, if D wins the direction with more vote will win, or maybe we will held a second vote to decide the direction, will see.

The cold north first must test the Barbarians will...

We must be first that he's :rpgcodex: ready, before entering decadent southern lands.

Like hell we will be a pariah and bring disgrace to our family. We will consecrate ourselves to Crom. We obtain revenge on The Serpent for tainting us. And if the village doesn't like us anymore, we will get out, get strong, return and BURN IT DOWN!

    The wind of the North

Kairn remained silent under the implacable scrutiny of the shaman, that after interminable moments finally spoke.

"I see, son of the blacksmith, for tonight you will rest here, tomorrow morning I will make the due arrangements with the chieftain and your family."

After these words the young Cimmerian fell in a deep slumber, his nerves proved by the experience, his soul burdened by shame and guilt.

Waking up was like coming out from a deep well, Kairn felt his whole body ache as after a great physical strain.
The pale Cimmerian sun dimly lighted the day, from it Kairn realized that was already high noon.
In that moment the Shaman entered the dwelling.

"I have already made the necessary arrangements, follow me."
Kairn wrapped the bear skin tightly around his body and stepped out in the cold winter climate.

They walked for a long trait in the snow until they reached a recently built wooden hut.

"From now on this will be your place, you are taboo, the only person with which you will speak is me and only after my permission, you are a good hunter, so procuring food and fire for yourself won't be a problem."
After this words the shaman took from under his clothes an armband made of a strange metal, similar to silver, and with a single gesture closed it around Kairn's left arm.

Even if for few moments it was as a white hot iron blade pierced the body of the young Cimmerian.

"This is your mark and your protection."

For a fleeting moment there was an indefinable sadness on the stone carved face of the shaman in saying these words.
Abruptly he turned his back to the proscribed young man and proceeded towards the village.

Kairn silently sat on the ground, the band of strange metal was firmly tighten on his arm, it seemed almost impossible to remove.
Many thoughts crossed his mind, but with the passing hours a fierce determination grew in his heart.
He would have never accepted to be a pariah.

After reaching his resolution, he fell asleep again, the long hunts taught him that resting was the most important thing before a long journey, and a very long one was ahead of him.

He suddenly opened his eyes, all his senses sharp like a wild animal.
The moon had already reached its peak when he leaved the hut.

He silently passed through the village, like a wolf stalking his prey.
After few minutes he reached his father's forge, skillfully sneaking in.

He passed almost all his younger days inside there, helping his father, he knew even the most remote corner of the room as the palm of his hand.

Feeling all the shame of his actions he began to search for a weapon with which defend himself from the dangers that certainly he would have encountered.

The rumor of heavy steps interrupted his activity, promptly making him find refuge behind a wooden stall containing leather aprons and other garments.

The light of an oil lamp illuminated the forge, it was his father, Dhurgal, but didn't seem to search for intruders, instead he seated at the workbench putting a flask of root beer and a bag with food on it as planning to have a quick meal before working.

After only taking a sip of beer and a morsel of jerky the tall man raised up and directed himself at the farmost corner of the forge, kneeling down as searching for something.

Kairn heard the noise of old wood creaking, it was like his father was struggling to take something out of the ground, after few moments the blacksmith stood up with a grunt.
Kairn could clearly see that he was carrying a large envelope of wrapped leather that he carefully put on the bench.

With rapid and precise movements the blacksmith untied the bundle, revealing the blue steel of a blade covered with various layers of bear fat.

Meticulously Dhurgal cleaned the sword, controlling the edge, in this way Kairn could see that it was a magnificent sword , with a large leaf blade, longer than his own arm, the dimension of the pommel at the end of the hilt spoke of a very heavy blade.

After carefully observing the blade his father sheathed the sword inside the scabbard that was inside the envelope.

For long instants Kairn saw his father bending over the bench, as immersed in some troubling thought, then, the blacksmith took the lamp and slowly advanced towards the door, leaving behind the sword and the food.

When he was about to leave the room Kairn for a moment felt the urge to call him, in that moment his father stopped in the door frame, as hesitating, then he closed the door without looking behind.

Kairn, feeling stronger than ever the combined bite of shame and nostalgia quickly retrieved the food securing the sword around his waist.

Leaving behind any precautions he ventured in the night directed to North, the direction from which the cold wind was blowing, chilling him to the bone.

North, where the hated Vanir dwelt and the Aesir roamed.

Kairn passed almost a week in the Northern woods, until that moment he was still in the Cimmerian lands, but was quickly approaching the border with Vanaheim, it was then that he saw them fro the top of a hill.

A funereal procession of grim looking warriors carrying heavy axes, covered in furskins and chainmail vests , from where he was Kairn could see their breaded beards and red hairs escaping from the helmets, what followed them was an uncanny sight, a disproportioned sleigh proceeded driven by eight polar bears conducted with whips and pointy sticks by their guides, at the sides two Vanir colossi, more than two meters tall, escorted a cloaked figure that was was seated inside the sleigh, coiled like a cat on top of what looked like a mount of severed heads.

Men, women, children, elder and young, those were the trophies that the warpack collected during its raid in the lands of Cimmeria.

A blinding fury possessed Kairn in seeing that, rapid his hand ran to the sword's hilt.

Suddenly the cloaked figure sprung up and began to look around as hearing something.
An argentine voice issued an order stopping the procession.
With a fluid gesture the figure removed the hood, revealing a woman of unearthly beauty, the pale visage was crowned by a cascade of silver hairs, her glaucous eyes inspected the surroundings trying to pierce trough the woods.

Kairn hold his breath while trying to adhere firmly against the tree in front of him.

After some moments of that immobility the bears grew restive growling and trying to bite their guides that with difficulty tried hold them in place, but an irate stare from the creeping beauty they were transporting was enough to make them cower and moan.

Irritated the woman gave order to continue their grisly march.

From behind his cover Kairn looked them depart.
A strange excitation caught him after seeing the woman, a mixture of desire and repulsion made his loins burn, for the first time in his life he felt something akin to subjection, and this angered him while longing for that ineffable sensation.

Lust and thirst for blood made his breath heavy, but was the sheer need to see her again that occupied his mind at the moment.
He angrily got back to his senses and felt that he had to make a decision.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

A)Let them go, is none of your concern anymore, besides, your village was already preparing to confront them.

B)Attack them, you know the surroundings better than them and can easily find a favorable position for an ambush, you have only to liberate the bears, the wounded beasts will tale care of the warriors and you will have to deal only with the colossi, however, your principal objective is the woman.

C)Precede them to your village and warn your people, this doesn't mean that your condition of pariah will change tho.

    D) Just follow them and see what happens.

    E)Try to join them.

B or D. I'll see what the others say. Personally I'm thinking we wait until they attack the village and then take the woman. No point warning the ungrateful fools.

A true young Cimmerian is rash, impulsive, and has no thought for the morrow, and no desire save sparkling red ale, red lips, and a keen sword to swing on all the battlefields of the world.

But he can also stalk like the grey wolf.

    B or D, but I suspect D would lead to B anyway.
