Damian Houser patiently observed the three signal converging to each other and advancing in a united formation.

In this way they can use the combined force of their distortion fields to clear th way more rapidly and safely, thought the captain.

And in this way will be quite easy follow their trail too, was his consideration.

He had decided to ascertain all that was possible about the enemy before taking direct action, confiding in the strength of Zhenar Xhan's battle group and the ability of his commander, at the moment the menace to the Commonwealth posed by the three unknown vessels seemed far greater to him.

When the three signals disappeared from the screens the battlecruiser silently began to move, entering the Xhanadar wall.

I humbly apologize for the delay, real life problems aside I had one of my recurrent episodes of total apathy, I hope that the players will continue to follow this LP as before.
However, in case someone has grown impatient with the LP's pace, this first installment of Wulfen's chronicles will be completed in another 4 or 5 updates, so just bear a little longer.

Burning Bright

Karhyen's defenders took advantage of the time at their disposal before the arrival of the bulk of the Jehnizar force.

They deployed Norian Dhen's battlecruisers around the planet, almost at sub-orbital distance to stay in the range of the atomic cannon on the surface, with Georian Sthar's assaulters at the forefront, while Wulfen's militia would have provided support against enemy' sorties.

The first to arrive were the 'vultures', their targets, the battlecruisers.

The energy shields managed to dissipate the first impact of the particle disruptors, while a powerful barrage of pulse blasts dispersed the assailants.

Immediately Wulfen's light astrocrafts began to chase the 'vultures'

The special multi-phase pulse cannons they employed easily passed through the enemy' shields and armor.

Thus the vultures' attack was effectively halted, forcing them to perform evasive maneuvers to survive.

But a greater menace was approaching Karhyen, 'condors', more massive than assaulters, armed with particle disruptors and laser bombs that released high intense light rays able to penetrate shields and armor.

Condors were the Jehnizars' best weapon due to their high maneuverability in comparison with battlecruisers.

They struck deep inside the Green Company's formation destroying one of the battlecruiser.

After this first attack they dived inside the planet' stratosphere with the intention of attacking from a more favorable position the astrocrafts sub-orbiting Karhyen.

In that moment pillars of raging atomic fire erupted from the surface burning through the atmosphere.

Completely surprised by that unknown weapon the Jehnizars frantically scattered, but only to become targets of the atomic torpedoes and the pulse cannons of the defenders.

Thanks to the atomic cannon their strategy doomed them, half of the 'condors' got annihilated in that first wave.

Despite this success, however, that continue onslaught was taking its toll on the militias, many assaulters had been destroyed and two battlecruiser were severely damaged without counting the one lost and the enemy battlecruisers were quicly approaching.

They should have been called space fortresses more than battlecruisers tho, they were deployed to attack planets after astrocrafts' protection had been eliminated or provided support for the Jehnizars' retreating forces, this was the first time that they were used for a direct confrontation with other astrocrafts, Norian Dhen wondered why they insisted so much after every move they made had been countered by Karhyen's defenders.

Is it possible that they are waiting for reinforcements, or there is some other reason?
This question was occupying the commander's mind while the battle raged on around him.

in the meanwhile Anton Brent, commander of the base on Karhyen, was reading the radar signal indicating the arrive of the new enemy astrocrafts.
"Is there a way to hit them with the atomic cannon even if they are beyond orbital range?"
He asked to the technical staff operating the remote controls of the atomic cannon.

"Well, fundamentally the cannon produce a controlled atomic explosion confined by a powerful magnetic field that also channels and directs it depending by how we narrow and extend the field with the electromagnets, we don't have the means to generate a field powerful enough."
The military engineer hesitated for a moment and then added:
"However we could try to use the full force of the field to confine the atomic explosion and then, by sudden inverting the polarity of the field, we can propel it beyond orbital range, but it's not very accurate and and even if it will work the cannon will resist only few shots in this way."

"That's not a problem, as long as we manage to take out two or three of their battlecruisers, proceed".

And they arrived, a swarm of 'hawks' preceded them, engulfing the defendants in a storm of rapacious warships, carefully positioning themselves, ready to explode a barrage of particle disruptors, laser bombs and missiles with vibroheads, a crude but efficient weapon to bypass energy shields, capable of demolish an astrocraft by inducing high frequency vibrations in its hull.

They watched how the Green Company astrocrafts retracted in front of them widening the distance among each other almost as Karhyen's defenses were about to collapse.

And then it was as a new sun dawned on the planet, filling the atmosphere of the planet with its luminescence.
Soaring through the sky into open space incinerating in its trail the lesser ships of the Jehnizars, finally exploding in its full glory in a blazing inferno, wiping out the shields of the first enemy battlecruiser, almost breaking it in two.

Four times this reddish aurora tinted the skies, and four times atomic fires erupted devouring the attacking ships.
The fifth time a white fire burned brighter that the others vitrifying everything around for kilometers.

Anton Brent, observed the signal of the instrument going out of the scale when the blastwave invested the base, effectively disabling their armaments.
"Gentlemen, it's time to retreat in the underground refuges, commence the evacuation procedure, for us the battle is over."
He said while calmly getting up from his seat.

Norian Dhen gave the order of a total assault against the enemy forces while thy were still in disarray, targeting the disabled enemy barrlecruisers.

For long minutes the battle raged on in a frontal confrontation between the opposing forces, when, what was a sensation at first, became an incontestable reality.

"They are retreating sir."
Communicated the officer to Norian Dhen.

Yes, the Jehnizars, after stubborning attacking, were fleeing the battle in an unorderly fashion.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A)For the first time there is the possibility to capture an enemy ship, Norian Dhen should order Wulfen to pursue them and seize at least a "vulture" while he will tend to the wounded and preside Karhyen.

B)Prudence, the defenders should eliminate the remaining enemy astrocrafts, regroup their forces and be ready in case they receive a help request from Zhenar Xhan.

C)The full defending force must pursue the enemy both for trying to acquire enemy technology and to eliminate the residue of the Jehnizar forces.
This, however, will leave Karhyen defenseless.

A or C. Fortune favours the bold and this attack does not seem like a decoy as they went quite hard at it and fought like they genuinely expected a victory.

I'll listen to the others before making my vote though.

Could we vote some sort of compromise between A and C? Like say send half the defence forwards? Wulfen and a bit of back up? Because completely abandoning the planet just screams terrible idea while Wulfen alone may not be enough.

Oh joy, all the players are still following this LP.
Well, except for Grotsnick, but he seems too busy to post nowadays, in case he is reading this. :salute:

Seems that modified A is the most popular choice.
All right I will prepare an addendum taking in account that providing a confirmation vote to see if is of your liking.

Before The Chase

Reports of wounded and distress signals began to crowd Norian Dhen command desk, after a moment of uncertainity he contacted Wulfen, which militia was relentlessly eliminating the enemy astrocrafts still wandering around the planet.

"Commander", greeted Lupus with a nod of the head while appearing on the communicator screen.

"Probably you already know, but the enemy is leaving the battle", said without ceremonies the field commander.

"And that's bothers you?", said Wulfen with a piercing gaze.

"Yes, when receiving the report I was tempted to chase them to annihilate their fleet completely", answered Norian.
"But the behavior displayed by the enemy has been too strange, in the beginning it was understandable, the battle followed the usual pattern of their precedent attacks, but when was clear that they were facing an entire battlegroup they didn't flinch for a second, almost as it was no surprise for them, and now they are abandoning the battle so suddenly."

"Maybe they were awaiting reinforcements that didn't arrive."

"In this case where are they?"Was the preoccupied rhetorical question of Norian Dhen,"Too much uncertainty, sending a not enough large group could be fatal if they encounter this new enemy force, and pursuing them with all our forces could spell doom for Karhyen if we don't intercept these reinforcements, admitting they exist and there aren't other reasons for the strange behavior of the Jehnizars."
"But despite the possible danger we can't ignore this opportunity, as you are well aware of until now was almost impossible to capture an enemy vessel for research."

"Yes, they have always been quick to flee, and, the others that can't, left only debris.", noted Wulfen with a smirk.

"Well, now we have the possibility to capture some very valuable Jehnizar astrocraft, they are surely trying to regroup in some safe spot, maybe trying to reach a reinforcement group, to be accomplished this requires someone with fast ships and experience in boarding astrocrafts, do you think to be up to the task?"
Asked directly Norian Dhen.

Lupus Wulfen smiled at that question, a sight that sent chills down the spine of the battle hardened veteran commander, that for a moment caught a glimpse of the sheer ferocity hiding behind that visage.
"I am very confident so, however a little backup will surely enhance our chances."

"At the moment our battlecruisers are not only the last line of defense for the planet but they are also sheltering the wounded providing the first cures while the Defiant Militia of Georian is conducting rescue missions of the dispersed crews in emergency pods or trapped in the carcass of destroyed astrocrafts."
"I can only provide you with a handful of assaulters of my group armed with nuclear torpedoes, is that enough?"

_______________________________________________________________________

A)All right, with the assaulters on your side you can confidently think to confront even a batllecuiser.

B)Useless, better act alone, you will be more faster in this way and disengage without problems if needed.
However you can't aim for more than a little group of "vultures" or some isolated "condor".

Net & Trident

Lupus' militia with an escort of six assaulter dashed at the pursuit of the fleeing enemy forces.

"To all the men, here is Commander Wulfen speaking, our principal target is the surviving enemy battlecruiser, at the moment it's probably converging at a rendezvous point with other enemy astrocrafts, the best tactic is to try to anticipate them using our superior speed, for this we will form three patrols that will cover the possible routes the enemy could follow while tracing the fleeing astrocrafts, when we will have determined with a reasonable probability the spot we will set up an ambush."

"In this we will have the support of six assaulters provided to us by Field Commander Norian Dhen, due to their inferior velocity they will follow us receiving constant tactical information from our ships ready to reach the designated location when asked."

"Your officers had already received their orders and you are not new to this game, so, let the hunt begin."

After these words the militia's astrocrafts parted their ways spreading an invisible net at which helm were Wulfen and his two vice-captains.

Meanwhile captain Gerdoff at the command of the six assaulters observed the flux of data passing on the screen of his tactical desk, for him hyper light-speed chasing was a totally new experience.

He knew that engaging an astrocraft at that velocity wasn't theoretically possible, but what Wulfen was planning to do seemed almost as impossible, not only following the enemy but anticipating him too?
Unheard of, the captain wondered if that crazy fame wasn't completely undeserved.

For long minutes Wufen's patrol prowled the space, the enemy being only sparse, faint colored traces on the screens, but which each passing moment those traces began to show a pattern with an underlying design.

"All the ships ready to reach their position."
This was Wulfen's order while sending the data through the tactical communicator at the assigned astrocrafts.

One by one they silently deployed, turning off all the systems, waiting for the enemy's arrival.

After a while 'vultures' began to show up, some of them with evident signs of damage, then some isolated 'condor' heralded the arrive of the remaining Jehnizar battlecruiser.

Gerdoff's assaulters were launched at full speed responding to the call when the screen displaying the enemy vessels intensely flickered as disturbed by a great interference.

Wulfen observes as five unknown astrocrafts appeared one after another, of oblong shape, slightly bigger than 'condors'.
The Jehnizars seemed unfazed by that sudden apparition.
"New astrocrafts and a new propulsion system seems, are these the reinforcements they were expecting?"
Was Lupus consideration.

The enemy ships and the unidentified astrocrafts began to approach each others with large maneuvers when, abruptly, the battlecruiser activated its shields few moments prior to the firing of the particle disruptors of the new astrocrafts, many 'vultures' received a direct hit before scattering to avoid to be annihilated.

After that the battlecruiser fired all its weapons against the newcomers, one of which was completely destroyed, engulfed in the explosion of its own energy system.

"New weapons, old flaws."
Observed Wulfen with a sardonic smile.

Before him commenced a grotesque dance of ravenous steel birds with the battlecruiser as its fulcrum.
A pandemonium of energy rays and explosive missiles that he silently observed with keen eyes from his concealed position in the dark cold space, pondering his next course of action.

________________________________________________________________________________________

A)Let them slaughter each others, you will safely collect the spoils of war afterwards, hoping that something substantial will remain.

B)Side with the Jehnizars against the newcomers, maybe they will be more ready to give you what you want in this way.

C)Attack both, in this way you will secure your prize and deliver the maximum damage, quite the daring choice.

D)Quietly leave, this can be very dangerous.

At the Shadow of Thousand Blades of Light

Wulfen carefully donned the helmet of his tactical armor.
"I will take control of the pilot system from now on."
He communicated to his crew.
"To all the pilots, prepare for combat operations at hyper light-speed, this is a total attack order."

The tactical communicator was finished sending to the escort of assaulters all the data relative to the enemy battlecruiser with the spots to target to incapacitate it when the propulsion systems of all the astrocrafts of the Wanderes militia were simultaneously activated.

Gerdoff observed in stupor the luminous trails drawing a bizarre arabesque intersecting the particle disruptors' beams of the Jehnizars and the pulse cannons' rays of Wulfen's militia, counterpointed by the explosions of laser bombs and wave torpedoes.

That was something rumored of but thought as all but an exaggeration.
"They are exploiting the mass effect, do they have a death wish?"
The mass sublimation effect, vulgarly known as the mass effect, discovered when the first astrocrafts capable to reach light-speed velocity were developed, what made hyper light-speed travel possible.

According to the old theories when an object acceleration neared light-speed its mass will tend to infinity.
This is when excess mass sublimation took place, using appropriate devices, called mass compensators, not only it was possible to exceed light-speed but to disperse energy based attacks and heavily reduce the damage took from projectiles, without mentioning that all the attacks of your weapons would have a boost.

However, this will also highly increased the chances for an astrocraft to instantaneously reach critical energy point, sublimating the whole ship in an emission of photons.
And more massive the astrocraft more easily the critical energy point was reached, only light astrocrafts had a realistic probability to survive fighting in this way.
That required not only ability and experience but also an enormous dose of luck, and temerity.

Wulfen's astrocrafts engaged themselves in an hazardous dance on the edge of Death' scythe.
Shuttling among the enemy forces they successfully destroyed another one of the unknown ships and many of the surviving 'condors' and 'vultures'.
But at least ten of them met their end in a cloud of atomic fire or a flash of scattering photons.

The unidentified astrocrafts used the distortion effect of their propulsion system to effectively defend against the attack of the Jehnizars and Wulfen alike, wiping out the last 'condors' and 'vultures' and concentrating their weapons against the battlecruiser, that managed to destroy another of the mysterious ships before its shields collapsed creating the opening for the assaulters of the Green Company.
Their nuclear torpedoes successfully disabled the battlecruiser systems, leaving only Wulfen's forces and the two surviving unknown astrocrafts to confront each other.

At the commands of his own ship Wulfen charged the hyper velocity guns with the emissions of the matter condensers, attacking the enemy heads on he cut through the alien astrocraft with a hailstorm of bullets leaving in his trail only atomic dust.
Three other of his ships were destroyed in the process of eliminating the last of the five.

In the unreal calm after such a heated battle Wulfen's astrocrafts hovered over the disabled battlecruiser as ominous fatuous fires circling an ancient galleon.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

A)Give the enemy the possibility to surrender, thus you will limit your potential losses and maybe obtain additional informations.

B)Don't waste time, board the ship and eliminate all of the remaining enemy forces while taking control of the battlecruiser.

C)Don't take unnecessary risks and don't waste time, use the hyper velocity guns to kill all of the enemy on board the battlecruiser, this will damage it further but not enough to making impossible to retrieve informations on the Jehnizars' technology, only harder.

True that, C !

No risks and no wasting of time. Let's do it the extreme way!

(Alternatively, someone may try swaying me to vote for option B. ;))

It will be easier to retrieve data on enemy technology.
Also capturing enemy ship means one more ship for Wulfen's fleet.
