There's a short preview of Mage Knight Apocalypse at GameSpot. They talk about the Diablo-clone-ish-ness of the title(which used to be a bad thing, remember?), inventory, combat, and this:

Mage Knight's character creation seems somewhat limited for a role-playing game, but you might expect that due to the game's story-driven nature. Though you can't adjust the name or gender of each character, you can tinker with their appearance a bit, adjusting facial and hair features. Further customization can be done through the various items, weapons, and armor. After that, you're dropped into the world, and the hacking and slashing can begin.

I can understand the gender thing, but not being able to name your character? Though you can edit your hair? Why it is character creation always gets the shaft in these types of games?

Duh. Isn't it obvious? That's "due to the game's story-driven nature"!

In other words: we're too lazy to script different names into the...the excuse for a dialogue the game will have. Or: total voice over limits us to a bunch of fucking names.

Seems like they're making a crossbreed of a JRPG and Diablo. This is probably a good idea from a business standpoint, it should appeal to teenagers wanting simple fun, and the abundance of bikini-clad warrioresses further indicates that teenage boys are their target market. If they manage to hype the game enough they'll see a lot of sales, I think.

It doesn't interest me much though, but I guess I might play it to while away some time if the hack&slash is halfway fun.

You know, I really wouldn't mind those kind of games, as long as they weren't marketed as Role-playing games. Seriously, does having an 'RPG' label increase sales, as opposed to having an 'Action' label?

Why do we need to edit or change the name? We already know he/she/it is "THE CHOSEN ONE"!

edit: This has the Dungeon Siege meets Diablo meets WoW look.

I hate it when armor, weapons, and other items are counted as basic "character customization." It's like saying "I'm unique because I wear THIS armor instead of that one!" instead of "I'm unique because I have different eyes and hair than that guy!" They do contribute a little bit, but goddamn, I hate it when it's one of the few methods of customization.

It's like saying there's character development and choices in Doom because you can choose whether to shoot zombies and imps with a shotgun or a rocket launcher. CHOOSE WISELY AS FOR EVERY CHOICE A CONSEQUENCE (ie: ammo)!

    character options are hard.

It seems kinda odd, graphically. Some weird hybrid of a shooter and diablo.
Fairly ugly 3-d trying to go on there too.

    Best part of the preview?

The mental images are very amusing.
