GameSpot also has a preview of Mage Knight Apocalypse. Here's a nifty bit about the single player portion of the game:

In the single-player game, you'll choose to play as any one of these characters, and you'll explore the game's six different realms, which will include your character's hometown. For instance, the amazon calls a jungle region filled with ruins that recall Mayan architecture her home, while the dwarf lives in a tranquil mountain village. Each character's hometown will eventually come to be a home area, which can be revisited instantly using a magic runestone that can be activated every 15 to 20 minutes. Hometowns will feature merchants to sell off the loot you've acquired from hacking and slashing through your enemies, and from which to buy unique items. You'll also be able to use your hometown's forge to socket magical gems, known as "magestone shards," into your weapons and items. These shards will have immediate effects on your inventory (a sword equipped with a red shard may deal fire-based damage, for instance), but they'll also trigger hidden abilities when used in the right combinations (such as planting a red and a green shard in the same weapon to create an all-new effect).

You know, I think it's great that the idea of starting different character types in different locations is catching on. It's good to see when good ideas spread.

I blame both Blue's News for posting news days late.. And you for not putting "GameSpot" in the title of your news post so I can see where the preview came from in the recent headlines list of the news posting program!

    Oh, and whoops!

Sacred, ToEE, Nox.. I know there's other games in the works that are doing this as well, because it crops up in a preview here and there. It's a great idea and makes a lot of sense.

Wizardry 8 does it too depending on whether its a completely new game or if your party sided with Vi, the T'rang or Umpani in Wiz7.

I don't think so. I am pretty sure you start in an inn regardless of what skills you choose, and then you have the option to do a few things immediately including starting off immediately into a fight.

Don't MMOs tend to have different starting locations? The only online game I ever really played was Guild Wars (online now as Carolina Xi Moor), though, which starts in the same location.

Ha, well, that is true but I think it's just random. It may be if you start as a noble or choose city professions you start in a bigger and better city, though.

I have noticed that the qualities and services available in the cities all change from game to game with the exception that nuremberg always seems to have the best quality weapons and armor and among the best universities.

Same can be said about Wizardry 7 vs Wizardry 6 - it was a feature of the series i guess.

Edit: Some older Ultimas had this feature too (Ulitima 4 and/or 5) - starting in different location with different character classes.

Sacred did it pretty well too. I quite liked the opening stories for each different character, it was very nicely done.

DAoC had different starting locations for a few years but removed them so all the noobs can find each other in the same spot (and also stop bugging people for horse money).

It depended on race/class, not just one or the other.
