Magic: The Gathering – Tactics is now ready as a free-to-play download.

Developed and published by SOE, creators of the critically acclaimed EverQuest and recently launched DC Universe Online, Magic: The Gathering – Tactics re-imagines the world-renowned trading card game as never before. From implementing the righteous powers of White mana and painting with the illusions of Blue, to embracing the amorality behind Black, the fury of Red or the natural force of Green – Tactics players will tap a universe of power to defeat both AI and online opponents.

Gamers can compete online against other players from around the globe in head-to-head battles or in competitive tournaments, or face the challenging chapters of the game’s story-driven single-player campaign. Players can level up their own unique Planeswalker avatar as they build powerful spellbooks with in-game booster packs available for purchase. In addition, Tactics players can progress through color-based talent trees, purchase additional campaign chapters or enter massive online tournaments with top-tier spells and unique prizes at stake.

Downloading now. Expecting a horribly gimped SP campaign (unlockable through DLCs) and a multiplayer experience that is essentially unavailable until you invest serious cash in virtual cards - which you additionally cannot use to win prizes in real competitions a la Magic Online.

I wonder why WoTC doesn't release Shandalar ripoffs frequently. They could release one every two-three years with different card packs and some slightly altered game mechanics - I would be glad to buy at least two of these. Tragic: The Garnering never gets old when you've got a deck to build and new card combinations to test.

I enjoyed the original MTG PC game. It was a ton of fun.

Yep. In addition to that SP is so ridiculously easy that it's no fun at all.

Unfortunately it was exactly just as I expected it to be. It's crap even for a retired MtG junkie like myself. The MtG game released a year ago where you could play only with predefined deck was much more fun than this one - at least there was a couple of hours of entertainment value and some decks were interesting enough to cover up the lacking AI.

If you'd like to spend a decent amount of cash on something MtG related you'd better just go for Magic Online.

I don't want to spend a decent amount of money on anything. But I'm sorry to hear the game's no good. Boooooo.
