People rip on ME2 but remember Bioware made the only black character's father a deadbeat dad who drugged and raped women. Shit was real.

He clearly says that ME2 completely ruined all that ME1 had built and that the writers were either incompetent or just didn't like ME1. He doesn't need to say LOL THEY RETARDED because he shows it by pointing out in the actual game how pretty much every choice made by bioware was the wrong choice for the game. The part that he finds redeemable is the actual shooting gameplay, which is a mild improvement over the first (A point for debate, sure, but not a retarded or shill-y thing to say)

I think ME2's plot was fine in isolation, it just ultimately went nowhere & was totally forgotten about in ME3

That was the trouble with both sequels, both ignored the previous installment to a large degree. By the end of ME2 you were no closer to unravelling questions asked in ME1, and ME3 took the whole Illusive Man plan to defeat the reapers and tossed it to one side.

It felt like Frodo had set out to Mordor destroy the ring, found out Vader was his father, then sacrificed himself to stop agent Smith spreading in an insult of an ending.

While I enjoyed Shamus's retrospective of ME 1-3, and his detailed of why the game's stories went to shit, I don't think ME:A deserves the same treatment. It's a bit like writing a full literary analysis of a convenience store romance novel.

    Also don't forget this:

Even if you disagree with my comments about ME2 vs. ME3 this quote alone should make you spit on this mockery of an analysis.

Yeah, how come someone doesn't use the same over-the-top codexian language we're used to when doing a long-ass in-depth analysis on his own blog.

    The horror.

I'm mean, it's not that he's not being critical of the game, he's just not critical of the game the way I am.

    The horror.

I just started Andromeda. Perhaps it's the Frostbite engine or something, but I'm getting distinct Inquisition vibes in the first area, it really feels like a reskin. The way the characters move, how scenery looks, even the map. And the characters do look like they probably have a Twitter blue checkmark or a Tumblr.

It's way too early to tell, of course, but I like that the game's premise allows for a blank state, and yet (unless they happen to be one-off enemies) it looks like the Collectors got a bad tan and are still after us.

Yep, the plot and the villains are even more retarded than in ME2 and everything is generally dumber, more mundane and drab. Only the environmental design is very pretty, especially some of the later planets.

A small correction. Arrival dlc is more.important than ME2 entire plot. And was used as the basis to introduce ME3 plot.

Other than that. Andromeda was so bad it really doesn't deserve an analysis. Because no one can learn anything from their mistakes. It was just retardation.

Only if you pay for the DLC. I didn't and so the Mass Effect 3 beginning is as confusing as the ending.

    Pay? bioware ?

Either way. They had no choice. Other than maybe just go with ME1 and ignore 2. Which would have been the only non retarded way to move forward.

No it wasn't, it was batshit retarded. Just the beginning of Jesus Shepard made me facepalm hard. The rest was a mess, dumbed down RPG elements, the minigame which replaced the Mako was the most boring thing ever and babysitting a dozen companions is about as endearing as watching paint dry.
On top of that the entire game was totally binary in terms of "choices". Do the loyalty mission to succeed, don't to the loyalty mission and fail the suicide mission.
Oh why again did the Reapers need that giant... whatever it was again? What was its purpose? What was the point of the game? Why were biotics castrated on higher difficulties? Why was there a global CD? Why the lazy "squad powers"? Why the retconning of weapons with the introduction of ammo? Ugh I could go on.

Tbh, I agree with most of that, especially the Jesus Shepard - that was fucktarded for sure, and seemed a hamfisted way of excusing skill resets or something.

But I just enjoyed the good aspects of the game for a single playthrough for what is was at a base level - a spin off about getting a gang of badasses together.

For the last 10 years it's never ceased to amaze me how much people nostalgia-coat the retardery of ME2 and how much they inflate the terribleness of ME3. Gaymers lol.

Well not just nostalgia coat. A lot of the Biodrones seem to be really affected with down syndrome, they are so damn retarded just read the first few pages of this thread:
    https://fextralife.com/forums/t249068/why-were-biotics-made-useless-in-me2/

Back in the day I was actually flabbergasted just how these idiots did not get the actual complain Hoffburger made and just wrote retarded crap like "Hurr durr u wuntz eazy modez" or "Adeptz wuz ovahpowderdz in ME 1 derrrrrpz". Made me even create an account just to point out to these people how utterly retarded they are, when it was still a Bioware forum. There were even posts by a developer and she just showed she did understood the issue either and her posts were deleted later because they were so embarassing, you can see evidence for that on page 15. The hilarious part is that her posts were already quoted by the time they deleted them so it was utterly ineffective at preventing to show that she had no clue what Hoffburger was talking about and therefore retarded.
Mass Effect 2, made by retards for retards.

See, there is a plot point burried deep into a series of unrelated fetch quests that asks the same question: who is behind the Initiative? Who is the benefactor? Is there a sinister motive behind all this? I don't remember if it ends up going nowhere or the answer was idiotic but it was the best piece of side content the game had to offer. It'll take Shamus a while to reach this part since it's almost endgame content.

ME2 is a fun game, but many people are unable to divorce the enjoyment derived from the extremely transparent gameplay loop from the rest of the game's execution. (Mission -> Level up -> Unlock talky bits -> Repeat)

It is the most "game" and least "story" of the Mass Effect games and it works well. So well that many people are unable to notice that the plot is retarded and full of holes, apparently. As depressing as that is, it is actually good news because it highlights that people don't want games to be movies. They want to pick a mission, grab the rewards, and have a breather to complete the pacing loop before repeating it.
