Max Payne 3 - Discuss!

Discussion in 'General Gaming' started by Morgoth, Sep 8, 2011.

  1. I am kinda curious how the performance shakes out for this. Since it's Rockstar I'm expecting it to run like ass, but I'm hoping they got better. I'd like this during a Steam sale even if Rockstar cannot into Max Payne, the gunplay still looked fun.

  4. Well excellent. Admittedly my PC (3ghz dual core, GTS250 with 512 vidya RAMs) is still pretty weak, but glad to hear it isn't as much of a mess as GTA4 and LA Noire. Maybe.

Alright so the port is apparently pretty good this time around. What about the actual game? Is it monocle enough for the 'dex?

At least the gameplay in videos supposedly looked like something Max Payne like so I decided to check it out.

After spending literally 50 minutes waiting for the game to begin, which never happened I deleted it. Sure they let me to kill 10 guys in a tutorial section with a 2-3 minutes long cutscene in between each 3 guys but then cutscene went on for 20 minutes and that's when I realised there's no game but just 4 DVDs of a pre-rendered amateur 3D cartoon.

    I just rage quit.
Basically the entire game is huge fucking corridor, nothing new here. That's Max Payne alright. Except that even the battles are so scripted, that if don't do what is expected from you, the game gets stuck.
Like doors which are not opening and then the game slaps you with a retarded checkpoint save system.
The camera is fucked up, the enemies are waiting to jump in front of you and by the end of the game, half of Sao Paolo population will have a huge air-vent in their skull.
But the story. Well. It's brilliant. Max is a alcoholic for the first half of the game and then he is killing an entire favela just because that's his first sober day. Absolutely no fucking coherence. It's quite phony.
Did I mention the fact that naked goons from the favela can take a lot of bullets in the chest!? And to make sure, you have to kill them like the zombies. Only with headshots. Those fucking Brazilians.

Honestly, I had more fun with Rage or K&L 2. I've put 5h in the game and I assume is like 8~10h max, but I cannot take it anymore.
The graphics are the only good part of the game. But the rest ... there is nothing monocle about it. It's a Rockstar game, I suppose whoever enjoyed the previous Max Payne games or GTAIV, will dig it.

    nice review, but then:

How can you put those together even ? MP1/2 and GTA4.. I'm pretty sure that liking MP1/2 is more to MP3 as liking Diablo1/2 is to liking Diablo3..

Because the game is a strange combination between these two franchises. Timebullet is from MP1/2, but the cut-scenes are clearly inspired from GTA franchise.

I know that no one that doesn't already know this cares, but I have to say the translation is weird as fuck, everyone has a different accent and portuguese dialogue keeps alternating between "Wyrmlord with a portuguese dictionary" and "100% deer bull order & progress blooded Native Brazilian"

taunts are also weird, like "fuck you motherfucker"(actual portuguese insult is just slightly longer, not something you'd want repeated throughout the game) as a generic taunt

a certain brazilian once famously said the only solution to the Favela Question is a nuke

I was almost buying your gameplay comments, and then you tell me this

though I get the impression the predecessors are a bit overrated

The gameplay segments between cinematics are fucking short as hell so far. Really annoying because the gameplay is as Max Payne as it ever was for the most part. Runs very smooth, even shows you how much video memory your graphic settings will take up.

Question about Rockstar Social Club, does it randomly generate a username for you or something because apparently I already had an account but the username is something I'd never use?

It's Max Payne with the comic sections swapped for cinematic ones. Apart from that the gameplay is practically the same. I like it. Game also let me shoot the entire cast of Jersey Shore so that's a massive plus in my book.

Since the game is 30 gb (come now, what is this bullshit? That's the heaviest game in the entire gaming history, I can't believe they couldn't apply some decent compression to cut that by half or so) I reasoned I'd be neither buying, nor stealing it and opted to watch an LP on youtube. Felt like a decent action flick; action parts (which took more than 75% of the LP which disproves the claim that it's a huge cutscene with action sequences). Admittedly Rockstar has some of the best CGI directors and VAs in the gaming industry.

Gameplay looks essentially the same as MP 1&2, with some nice AWESOME (like, really awesome) additions, like the moments where Max is hanging on a railing and must shoot all the bad guys from it in a limited time or gets whacked when he falls. If the things toro wrote made him ragequit then I suggest he abandons the series as exactly the same 'criticism' can be raised against the first two parts. Seems like a proper sequel; one thing I didn't like was the protagonist's VA performance, which at times felt right but sometimes (especially in the epilogue) felt completely forced and over-the-top.

I might check it out one day, I'm not into third person shooters but Max Payne 1 was the first (possibly only) one that I actually liked. I'm really not into cinematics though, 1/4 of the game is too much. I have a DVD player and a shitload of 'C' movies (really, I do and they're not even 'B' movies) for that kind of stuff.
