I'm not a big fan of mecha in any medium and the only game I've played was Shogo. Is there a modern equivalent of it? The combination of FPS + giant robots made the gameplay more interesting.

There's Lost Planet which is tpp+mecha but I've only played a demo of the first game and it was long time ago, I barely remember it. Maybe Titanfall in you're interested in an mp game.

So, i'm playing Armored Core, starting with the first one 'cause why not. Cool gaym and everything, but one thing i can't seem to find any information on. What missions should i pick to make sure i get all of them? Right now i'm always starting with the mission that pays the least, but i wonder if maybe this isn't a mistake and some of the higher paid missions are going to disappear from the roster. I'm also guessing Chrome is the "evil" side of the game. Is picking missions indiscriminately going to affect anything?
Disclaimer: Haven't actually played the games in the series before AC2.

That said, I played through the others the same way as you, and simply reloaded my last save if I missed out on any missions. You could probably track down the perfect order in a guide on gamefaqs or something, but if you're trying to avoid missing any missions, presumably you're enjoying them enough that you won't mind replaying one here or there.

Besides, the series as a whole is really long. You'll almost certainly burn out long before you run out of new missions to play.

Ok, so basically once you do the last mission in Armored Core, you can finish all the ones you missed. Is that a rule for all of the games in this series? Because that being the case i don't see why i should fret over which missions to pick.

Replaying finished missions is pretty standard for the series, since they tend to have special loot or rewards either from looking around or top-notch performance, or some more esoteric requirement, and it's the primary means the player unlocks cash for buying parts from the shop. For example, in case of For Answer, the game restarts after you clear the last mission, since there are three alternative paths in the final act of the game, though you can always replay any mission and duel you've finished before in Free Mode (which includes Hard Mode) for cash, loot etc. In V and Verdict Day, the player can replay any mission whenever, since the campaign itself is a series of unlocked missions without exclusionary paths through them, and the missions do feature hidden loot.

Generally speaking the only thing one needs to pay attention to in terms of replaying is that you don't make negative balance in the mission after your deployment, spent ammo, and repair costs are subtracted from reward cash. Though this is extremely rare and thus not a big issue, even if you deploy an AI sidekick with top-end hardware in Verdict Day.

Moving on to the two expansions before jumping to Armored Core 2. Game was kinda easy, it was just made harder by the crappy controls. Last mission in particular had me rage quit almost. And i still can't fight properly against an enemy that jumps around constantly (and the AI always has perfect accuracy). Do the controls get any better in the later games? I don't even see how people did multiplayer with this kinda of set up.

100% selling price is a staple of the series, yeah. Money really only matters if either you suck horribly enough to actually lose money in the long run (either by getting blown up too much or wasting expensive ammo) or are in the early game, in which case it functions as a sort of cap on how strong a mech you can make. Later on you can often afford 2 or 3 mechs built exactly how you want with cash left over.

As far as fighting mobile enemies, there are lots of things that might help. Turning speed on your legs is a big one, obviously. Keeping distance and using weapons with better tracking and projectile velocity help too, so can using a radar with a high refresh rate to keep track of enemies not in your field of vision. Another method is use of missiles with good tracking, AI generally can't dodge missiles worth shit (though some enemies might be loaded with a lot of counter missiles.)

The games tend to have some sort of "winning combination all the way." Ie, Nexus had dual Wyrm sniper rifle loadouts as the way to kill anything and everything, in 4 and For Answer it's gatling weaponry.

Yep. Though when it comes to unlocking all the shit possible you just want to fuck with the system as hard as you can and then do it like you'd do otherwise.

Getting S Rank in the Hard version of the Old King path's final mission in For Answer is hell after all.

Yeah, the ranking system is kind of part of the difficulty imo. Particularly since it is often what unlocks extra parts. Playing the game while accepting any old rank you get is kind of like playing on easy mode. If you want a challenge, going for the top ranks in a lot of missions is very difficult indeed.

The mechs get more agile and control more smoothly from 4 onwards. AC is a difficult game to control because there are so many inputs, not really any way around it.

The later PS2 AC games have dual stick controls. (Nexus was first to have this IIRC)

Is there a way to emulate the earlier Armored Cores? I've always been interested in trying them out, and I don't have a PS1.

I was always fond of AC: Arena. Some of the opponents were rage inducing to say the least. Oh how I loved trying to draw a bead on a guy as he leapt around while peppering me with perfect accuracy buckshot, which stunned me every shot.

So I bought and started playing Verdict Day and I have to ask: just how viable is blading? It's powerful as fuck (used the junk laser blades and two-shotted one of the first bosses) but the movement of your AC seems to undermine the whole thing. Even the charge attack that's meant to stun your opponent doesn't do anything; unless the legs you use affect it? Can anyone provide any info? It seems From intended for you to use blades considering there are weapon arms devoted to the damn things.

Blades are a specialized weapon that take more than usual amount skill to use effectively. They deal huge damage and have no ammo limit, but you need to close the cap and outmaneuver your opponent if using them. Pure blades is viable, but hard to play with. I myself tended to use blades in duels where I needed to one-shot a slow enemy. The Pile Driver blades differ from physical and laser blades in that they use ammo, have no rush attack at all, and deal enormous damage and stun.

Blade stun is like any other stun effect: It depends on the stability value of the target. Tank legged fuckhueg ACs and other highly stable set-ups are likely to avoid stun entirely, or have an extremely brief stun.

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but Battletech for the Genesis is a lost gem. Very short but it's awesome; gameplay derives from Urban Strike/ Jungle Strike, but like Rampage, you are crushing tanks and infantry until you fight another Mech...

I would like to play a good mech game again too; mech commander doesn't work on my laptop.

There are some mech warfare themed online games like War Metal Tyrant/ Tyrant Unleashed (good for a weekend but NEVER pay real money to Synapticon!). War Metal Tyrant is shutting down in about 6 months so if you've never played it before this is a good time to enjoy it since they are giving away pretty insane daily bonuses. There was another one that was being developed a few years ago; I forgot the title and I think the publisher went out of business?

If you are branching outside of games, try books (Battletech novels, especially Michael Stackpole, and also Bob Thurston and Bob Charnette), and anime (Evangelion).

There must be a zillion Japanese Voltron/ Gundam/ Evagelion games.

Ok so I just looked it up it was called MechDuels and it was taken down. But there are several mech browser games out there if you just do a simple search.

There's a couple of memorable NES games as well.

The Guardian Legend: This one is a classic and your character is basically a LAM (Land-Air Mech)
Metal Storm: Good graphics for a NES game

Steel Empire (Genesis): This is steampunk, not mechs, but it could fit the right fetish, and I think there are some mech bosses

I bought this game at a pawn shop for 2 bucks today. I haven't played it much, but it doesn't seem too bad and hasn't been mentioned yet.

Tried it on PCSX2, but your mobile suits are all invisible (allied and enemies are visible though)
