Memorable little things in your games

So I've been replaying DK2 recently (tried to replay the first one but it runs too fast on my rig regardless of any CPU hogging software I run). One thing I completely forgot about was the casino. Suddenly I heard "jackpot winner!" and this happened. Those dancing salamanders are completely awesome. Also: "Your nocturnal perseverance has earned you a gaming tip. GO TO BED." and others which can be heard when you're playing after midnight.

Seems like modern games cannot into charm. Post away similar stuff from games you know, little touches that are of relatively little consequence but are memorable and are a big part of the experience - like the sounds in Duke Nukem or angry unit reactions from earlier Warcraft games and starcraft if you clicked on them too much.

EDIT: Oops, perhaps this should've gone to GG or GD.

Shit. All I ever did was get those dominatrixes and tortured them. It was hawt.

But as for memorable stuff. Eh, I liked the VO in CoH. There's good VO elsewhere, but it was especially well done here.

NPCs changing their dialogue after I do something important, and / or if I come back after a long time. It's just a dialogue change that can make even towns with NPCs wandering back and forth feel much more alive.

Relating to that, in Fallout 2 the prostitutes of New Reno make some funny comments if you walk by them wearing the Enclave Power Armor.

I think that's pretty cool, random npcs reacting to your equipment.

I realize this is totally cliche around here and I'm not sure if it's really what you're talking about, but I'd also like to throw in the Ocean House from Bloodlines. It was a fantastic send up of The Shining and the best "mission" of any game I have ever played. It was so well crafted from start to finish with crazy attention to detail like the toy car that bumps into you, the ghost of the murdered girl, and the glimpse of the axe-murderer's shuffling feet behind the boiler.

There is more than 1300 different one-liners from New Reno whores that are triggered by having certain followers, reputation (boxer, porn star, made man), power armour, PC's sex or even finishing the game.

I really liked the enemy insults from FO1/2 and the weapon/item descriptions. They really added tons to the atmosphere and not including them in FO3/Vegas was a really bad idea, in my opinion.

Eg the switchblade description:

"The blade of this small knife is held by a spring. When a button on the handle is pressed, the blades shoots out with a satisfying "Sssssshk" sound."

Lil' Jesus description:

“This wicked looking blade once belonged to Lil' Jesus Mordino. It has numerous nicks and cuts along its surface, but its edge is razor sharp. On its handle is carved "Little Jesus."

Also classic comments during combat:

"Gonna make you a bitch"
"I'm gonna enjoy this..."
"My eyes! My fucking eyes!"

And not to forget the hilarious descriptions of what happens to an enemy when you shoot them in certain places, or when you miss, etc...

It shone, pale as bone,
as I stood there alone,
and I thought to myself
how the moon, that night,
cast its light, on my heart's true delight,
and the reef where her body was strewn.

If you call yourself a gamer and yet need to be told where that's from, you need to be purged ASAP.

Insert clever insult here
First time I fished in Ultima Online and the fisherman next to me turned out to be a PC instead of an NPC.

Finding a toilet in Ultima Underworld, in the first goblin village.

Having NPCs reacting to your reputation and actions in Fallout and F2.

The strippers in Duke that you could throw money at.

Assuredly many more.

Found that part boring.

Hmmmmm ok, now where's this thing I was looking for in the mansion... oh, some diary about a murderous husband, I wonder what will begin to happen in a few minutes ...

... and you don't say, poltergeist! Wow! I didn't expect it!

Now be done guy ghost with throwing all the objects in the house at me, and bitch ghost show me where's that damn thing already so I can leave.

the dead Doom space marine in Duke Nukem secret level was a nice touch..

also dying in Vampyr gets you to heaven instead of game over, and the gods are the two programmers of the game. I love Vampyr.

The libraries in Warlords 1 had some funny stuff but I really cannot remember any of it anymore :(

Minsc was helluva annoyance in BG1 but I occasionally mishear him saying "FULL PLATE and FUCKING STEEL, right Boo?". That brought much joy and is the reason that whenever I replay BG1 I always pick Minsc.

Actually, I think these camp VOs are one of the main reasons I like to replay the BG series. Hearing "My prices are the best this side of Cormyr" or "I need'a swig of some STRONG, DWARRVEN ALE" is just too much fun. Or, in the Polish version, said by an incredibly annoying high-pitched voice:

"MAMMM NAJLEPSZE CENY PO TEJ STRONIE CORMYRU"

BG series had some of the best Polish localisations in history precisely because of the fact that they had captured the camp atmosphere so perfectly. Most of BG dialogue sounds as if taken from a PnP session played by a bunch of 14-year olds and that's its charm, I guess.

Not to mention the Ring of Wizardry being hidden near a tree outside the Friendly Arm Inn... in the original version without TOTSC it was very hard to find it even if you knew where to look. Great easter egg - dunno how someone found out about it in the first place.

JA 2 dialogues still the best. The amount of effort they put to the worst and best mercs are amazing.

Fuck yes

"W-w-w-w-witajcie w moim sklepiiiiikuuuuu"

Well, each time I think about Thief 2, the first thing that springs to my mind is the foreboding Mechanist roboguard hidden inside a crate in the Mechanist warehouse in mission 2. Also, the secret objective in Truart's Mansion, where you can take the sheriff's corpse to the secret graveyard.

Also: Swinekeeper in System Shock 2
