- Some guards call in ever so often to report their location. If you knock them out a search party will be send for them, so make sure to keep an eye on this.
- Make sure to be aware of what the guards can and cannot see: don't trust 100% on your radar for this.
- Take your time to figure out the patterns of the guards so you can sneak through.
- Note where you find locked doors and go back to their location once you gain access to more places: you can find a lot of weapons this way.
- Your pistols are your best friends, but make their shots count.

Of course! You play the role of Big Boss. How is there even a question about it?

Haven't replayed the MGS series since 4, but here's stuff off the top of my head to add to Caim's list:

- You can hide unconscious guards in lockers and they never wake up.
- L1 is autoaim. You can run around with your weapon drawn in 3rd person when you have the L1 key pressed. Very useful for certain bosses.
- Do not stand too long in the rain.
- While running, press x to do a dive/cartwheel that knocks down enemies in addition to crossing over gaps.
- Buttons are pressure sensitive, so If you press R1 too quickly while peeking out of a locker, you will bang your head against the door, potentially alerting nearby guards.
- R2 can be pressed twice to instantly reload your weapon.
- If a guard spots you, you have a handful of seconds to shoot his radio before he raises the alert.
- If you come across escort missions, consider knocking out/tranquilizing your ward.
- Seagull droppings can be hazardous to one's balance and health.

This is allegedly in the game's files, but it could just be trolling

Is there any reason to Fulton those containers on the deck of Mother Base, or is doing that just a waste of money?

So, finally went back in and did some random missions I didnt bother with, and a couple of side ops.

For all of the griping about the story, there are some genuinely amazing/hilarious moments. If you're far enough in the game, get the Rocket Arm, it's fucking ridiculous. Venom Snake screaming out "ROCKET PUNCH" before his prosthetic arm becomes a missile that knocks out a train line of 4 guards in a row while D-Dog takes out a fifth and The Final Countdown blares in the background is 2gud4plebs.

One thing that really sucks though is the dev time on some of the later items. Some nig nogs in here were complaining about 16 minutes... the Worm Hole upgrade for my Fulton is going to take 2 hours 26 minutes. Like, what. What am I supposed to do? Just leave the game on? Pretty stupid.

Don't forget Paz's tape where she describes them fighting naked in the showers.
Or how said fight was actually elaborated on, voiced and superbly illustrated in the drama CD that came with the Japanese soundtrack of the game.

Anyway, I just finished all the main ops and side ops in Phantom Pain. 130 hours total playtime. Game's good in general, but it certainly has some glaring flaws.

Coming here and learning all this stuff about a last chapter being cut is quite enlightening. I was wondering if I missed something, or the game was like Peace Walker and had a three or four consecutive fake endings, but if a whole last arc was cut then no wonder I'm left pondering what the fuck happened with Liquid, the Third Child, the kid soldiers and Sahelanthropus.

Well the third child is pretty much confirmed to be Psycho Mantis. Of course, why PM went from this unstoppable creature that can resurrect the dead, literally move metal gears with his mind, and all other manner of things to... some bald dude that makes you change your input to beat him is beyond me. (love the psycho mantis fight in MGS1, but there's some sheer wonkiness going on with the power levels here)

While the Blu Ray extensively shows off chapter 51 which was pretty close to being finished, I think that's just the tip of the cut content iceberg. So many story threads go nowhere, and the twist really feels like something that should've been done ~60% through the game (so the rest can play off of it)

I legitimately believe what we got is about 40% of the full story. If you think about how Chapter 2 only has like 5 non-repeated missions, and how there was a Chapter 3 in the preliminary files...

As fun as it is to yell at Konami, a tremendous amount of responsibility falls on Kojimbo's head here. Instead of creating 170 side ops, making various filler missions, and literally having his composers create the same pieces and over until he thought they were perfect... he should've made sure that the full narrative was 100% finished first.

But yeah, game is very good for what it is. Pretty much a good version of crysis/far cry, but still falls woefully short of its potential.

Good news is there really isn't much on the horizon for Vidya as a whole so we can all start to move towards other things in life. I mean really, what is there? Age of Decadence and Torment 2 come out fairly soon and should be decent for a playthrough. Dark Souls 3 will likely be treading old ground that's too familiar by now. Barkley 2 and Grimwah are never-ever status. Itz happening men, the gehenna of games.

I like this game overall, but, holy shit, escort missions need to stop. Like now.

A developer is allowed to have one maaaaaaaybe two "escort this weakling while fighting off enemies" missions per game. I'm only about 30% through MGS5 and there's been at least FOUR of the fucking things so far. :argh:

Huh? There's only 1 actual escort mission I can remember, the one with the kids.

Unless you mean every mission in which you have to carry a wounded target, but you can just put them down and clear the area (or git gud and sneak)

Hayter got worse and worse as time went on.

Do you think it was the writing or Hayter that got worse? I'd say it was both but Kojima should have gone with John Cygan for MGSV who also voiced Solidus Snake.

I think my last post asking this question was buried too quickly for folk to answer, so I'll beg everyone a pardon (not being sarcastic, genuine apology for repeated post) and ask again:

I'm thinking of getting MGSV, should I play MGS 1 to 4, or any selection thereof, first?

Yes. Start with MGS Twin Snakes since the original is unplayable now. Some of the remade scenes are bad but others are really well done. You might have to use an emulator for that. Then move onto MGS2 Sons of Liberty which got an HD remake. Then MGS3 Snake Eater HD the apex of the series and perhaps the best Cold War story ever made.

Does advancing the console clock work? I'm guessing not.

So the research timer is independent of the in-game time? E-cigaring won't work too?

420 blazing it has no effect on the development and deployment timers, no - neither does moving forward in time from entering missions at a specified time.

Pretty much just have to actively play the game, or let it sit on the ACC / motherbase for 2 hours lol
