Most patrician way to play Fallout 1 for the first time?

Any essential mods or bugfixes? I have the GOG version is it fucked up?

 

The authoritative method is to find a computer made in the mid 90s and an original CD version of the game.

 

Only thing I do is install the unofficial patch and widescreen resolution mod. Resolution should be set to something reasonable like 1280x720 on a 1440p screen, using integer scaling in your GPU control panel. Running at full monitor resolution will likely make it too zoomed out.

 

The GOG version comes with the res mode. Once you install the game, find the res mod exe inside the game folder. I run the games at 1440p. Fuck off.

Fallout 1 is a little buggy though so make plenty of save files. I remember I had issues with some asshole doctor bugging out on me for whatever reason but that was 20+ years ago. Jesus Christ....

If you’re on a 1080p screen, play 960x540. Resolution is one of the, if not the, most important settings to play these old games as they were intended. Do not under any circumstances enable “control your party members”.

1. 800x600 for the original experience. Even 1024 x 768 is too big and the main char (and companion) figure is too small.

2. If you play Fallout 1 original (and not Fallout 1 in Fallout 2 engine aka Fallout Et Tu), I suggest a Luck 6 for a most patrician virgin play through. Luck 9 is actually a bit too hard. Luck 5 (and get +1 luck in boneyard to 6) is a bit too minmaxing.

Luck 6 ensure that you get most of special encounter, and good store stocks. Luck 5 is so so. Luck 9 is actually best but that require a heavy minmaxing play, not patrician.

When I say good store stock I mean it. Luck affect random number generating, and RNG affect the chance of item respawn in store. A luck 2 player has a very different shopping experience compare to luck 6 or luck 9.
