Just got it and wondering if theyres anything I should get before I startup. the usual with Paradox games is that they need 1 or 2 for the game to be great.

There are two big mods fixing almost everything to choose from.

PDM (started as Pop Demand Mod now something else) is a MOD. It changes the game to suit the needs of its creators.

VRRP is Victoria Restoration and Rebalance Project. Its main goal is to fix the game and make it working as intended with less intervention into the core aspects of the game.

Creators of both cooperate so some ideas are common, they also include some submods. Both mods are worthwile.

Are there any mods changing gameplay for the non-huge uncivs to something other than "sit around for a few years doing nothing until Great Britain, Russia or France decides to come rape your tender butthole?" In other words, making the game less hilariously biased in favour of the big 8?

Think of it like prison - you need to be someone's bitch or you gonna get raped.

Ive been having a fun time learning to play as Afghanistan on very-easy. Almost won 2-way war with Russia and China in 1880 and was a couple years away from industrializing. Fuck accepting anything other than a white peace though.

Thats how it was, Big Boys bullied the small folk. Well, less annexationa nd more influence/puppeting especially in Latin America, but still it was Age of Imperialism.

    Get Big/Strong or die trying.

Didn't vicky 2 only come out 2 months ago? Crazy the speed of the modding people.

Since most things can be 'modded' by changing text files... Pdox games are VERY mod friendly.

    BTW losing is fun.

How? I tried doing what you did only to be brutally beaten down by Russia after less than five years.

The "realistic vs fun" argument has always plagued Paradox titles. Sure, it may have been REALISTIC that just about any 3rd world country the British arrived in during the 19th century was in for a good cornholing and annexation, but just how much FUN is it to play such a country?

I'd claim that since Vicky is an alternative history game, for fuck's sake, it should be possible NOT to have this happen as one of the pathetic, tiny countries. Afghanistan's even fairly strong for an unciv.

Dont know how you got beaten down in 5 years.. In my version of vicky there is 3 nations on-top that buffer you from Russia. Usually you get around 20 years before Russia (usually when I play its Britain) Starts to go after you.

Mebbe you havnt patched or sumfin.

Anyways my strategy for Afghanistan so far has to modernise as fast as possible, starting with the army techs required for Westernization and the Commerce techs that give a boost to your economy. From there I try and annex as much as I can around me without garnering to much hate. The green nation to the North is usually my first target, depending on alliances. Persia is a pretty manageable enemy with only 2 fronts to the west. China usually attacks fairly early but once you put a fort on the one entry point into Afghanistan they get bottlenecked and you can p much just rack up Prestige/Exp.

but ye, spend as much diplomancy points as you can to make Britain like you, cause once they dont, Shit can get bad pretty fast. Ive had them blow through the red country to the south-east in a year a couple of times for them to come and steamroll me. Makes me want to cry.

This is all on very-easy though.

Eyeball, Civ might be more to your liking. And as pointed out, similarly to DF:
