Nethack has been updated to version 3.4.1 for those interested in my rogue-like of choice. Here's the skinny:

Fix a few fatal errors including one for reentering shops, one involving land mines and boulders/statues, one for delayed polymorph, and one for chest traps blowing up a ball and chain

Fix a buffer overflow that could lead to security problems

Hundreds of general bug fixes

Several message and other glitches corrected

Travel command adjustments and ability to disable travel command

message recall window extensions (by Christian Cooper)

win32: some interface improvements

unix: improved tile support

gnome: some fixes, and some enhancements by Dylan Alex Simon

Windows CE port included (by Alex Kompel)

If you've never tried a rogue-like, now's your chance to try one. Just don't be too disappointed if you die a lot. They're not easy.

Y'know I just tried Nethack (via Falcon's Eye) for the first time, and I don't know if mine was broken, but I kept getting attacked by invisible enemies and dying without any sort of combat mode activating. Is the game real-time? Sorry for the newbness of this question, but it turned me off real quick to NH, though I have to say I really like the look of the Falcon's Eye layer. Made me sort of imagine a collaboration between that guy and J Vogel...

It's all turn based, and I don't think you should meet up with invisible enemies in the first few levels. I never have, and I've got to level 5. Give it another shot... Rangers and valkyries are good classes to start with.

Thanks for the tip. I just downloaded a pdf guide, so maybe I'll give it another shot this weekend.

Nethack is my personal favorite rogue-like engine, I prefer it over ANGBAND. Nethack is a little bit more tongue in cheek, which is fantastic when wandering down the dark dungeons.

I'm playing SLASH'EM right now. It has a lot more features added, such as firearms and toilets. I'm not sure if the Keystone Kops are still around, I'll need confirmation.

It sounds to me like you were blinded, XJEDX. If you're blind, then you can't see the monsters. There should have been a message in the text display saying that you're blinded, though.

I highly recommend nethack in ascii. Its sorta like reading a book vs. watching a movie...when you read a book, your mind fills in the text with your own images.

Plus I don't like they way Falcon's Eye controls, and I don't like the nethack tilesets because I want all of the map to fit on the screen (to make it easier to tell where hidden areas are likely to be).

I'm currently in the midst of my longest running game of nethack ever. Been chasing some leprochauns and nymphs around...I lost all my good stuff to them, and everytime I almost kill a nymph, they blast through the floor with a wand, and we fall through to the next level and continue our epic struggle over my +1 longsword...the bastards, I want it back!

Maybe. But considering it was the very first rooms, it doesn't seem very likely...

You can also wear blindfolds, although I don't think any class starts out with one equipped. I also reccomend it in ASCII. Falcon's Eye is a great job, but the text allows your mind to conjure up all sorts of fun shit.

Not to mention that players using Falcon's Eye don't / a monster that frequently. (At least I didn't.) As a result, you're much less likely to notice the funny monsters that appear when hallucinating.
