Exitium used to masturbate about drivers, then he went to "i dont upgrade unless I have a problem", and it now back to masturbating about drivers. the evolution of SOL INVICTIOUS

So far I've had 4 nvidia cards and one ATI. Can't say I wasn't pleased about the Rad 9600 pro I had, but the drivers back then sucked. Dunno how it really is now. I keep hearing things like the new Catalyst makes your ati 100% faster in opengl and such. Maybe nothing's changed.

Sony decided to use an nvidia card, while Microsoft got an ati for their new xbox. I wonder how will that work out.

Actually, I think you're confusing Exitium and me. I'm the one that rarely ever updates his drivers.

Yeah, you can't be a proper graphics whore if you aren't always updating your drivers. It just wouldn't work.

Heh. I stopped caring about drivers long ago. I'm running whatever was the latest driver when I put together a year ago. No problems yet. (ATI 9600 Pro)

Hell, with my newer TV box, I'm running the drivers that came on the CD with the video card, and I have absolutely no idea what version they were, but I've not had any difficulty (El cheapo GeForceFX 5200)

The only drivers that I remember that I need to use are with the old retired tvbox, which was running a GeForce 2 Ti, and the only reason I remember that is because the TV out was fucked in later versions. Good old Detonator 28.82 drivers, I've yet to run into trouble with those on that device.

Isn't it such that new drivers tend only to update stuff on the current generation of hardware? If so, I see absolutely no reason to ever upgrade my drivers, since all my cards are obsolete.

And besides, drivers these days are much too bloated. I remember a day when you'd actually have to download a specific driver for a specific device, and none of them were larger than 3mb. These days, they expect me to dowload 30mb+ of bloated all in one drivers. It's a travesty, I tell you.

Also, I've been bitten many times by updating drivers using these all in one driver packages, and having my perfectly fine system screw up because I was running hardware that wasn't current generation.

Unless you're running current generation hardware, or you're experiencing problems, you'd have to be an idiot to risk system stability by frequently updating drivers.

I had to downgrade my driver after my last upgrade because it messed up Gothic's graphics.
