Fez just stumbled across a new indie action CRPG called Avencast. Not too much about it other than it's 3D, it's actiony, and there's a 53MB *BETA* demo of it. Oh, and screenshots. Here's what the about page says about it:

"AVENCAST" is a 3D role-playing game in the classic fantasy genre. In the demo version you adapt the role of a novice in the magic academy of Avencast. As a delegation of villagers comes to the academy to seek help, you get your first chance to prove yourself worthy of becoming a magician. You agree to travel to the village Aramelund, which is haunted by an ignominious creature and a deadly spell. Now all the villagers put their trust in YOU…

Well, if they're putting their trust in me, they're just asking for pain.

What is he holding? Brush? (Sweepstick?)

Overall, graphics are nice. I like them. Gameplay, though, sucks, I dont like it. I guess its pretty much real-time and seems to be solo. Not that it would be crucial, but I dont think its my dream game.

The camera angle of this game is retarded.

Have you tried their forums? The last post was back in March, IIRC. I'm not sure that this guy is ready for much attention yet.

Ready or not, here it comes.

Fez basically found an indie game compeititon that this game was enrolled in, so I figure he's ready for some hype.

As for the game itself, I just want to know what the deal is with German type Europeans and awful, awful controls.

Yeah, the controls are rather clumsy.
And the camera angle is awful.

But fix these two things and I think there is a framework there which could be used to make a pretty good game.

You can tilt and zoom the camera angle, and the keyboard shortcuts help a bit. The controls take some time to get used to, not as tough to tame as Gothic though.

    Hi,

I'm the project leader and programmer af Avencast. I just came across this thread by coincident and I'd like to add a few comments:

Avencast gained a lot of publicity during the last few days since it showed up on rpgdot.com and rpgcodex.com. However, there is one thing you should know. The present Avencast demo was rather an experimental thing. There are many aspects we didn't like about it (eg. the game play and the controls). That's why we were rather trying to keep the Avencast project unknown.
For the last six months we are working hard on a completely revised version of Avencast - new gameplay, new story, new main character, upgraded 3d engine. We are hoping to have the official Demo v4 finished by the end of summer, which will reflect the final game much more than the present Demo v3. The final game will then be released in winter. I hope you'll check it out - we are doing our best not to disappoint you!

    Greetings,
    Michael

I honestly do not think that there is prob with the 3d engine as such.
When I sober up I will wax lyrical bout "other stuff"(tm)
