New Total War game: Warhammer

Discussion in 'Strategy and Simulation' started by Merkwürdigliebe, Dec 6, 2012.

  1. Shogun 2 is great and probably the closest to Rome: TW in the series ( i haven't played Attila, so cannot judge)

Fall of the Samurai is better but it suffers from the idiotic e sport micro moron speed they put in the new titles. Which means that you can still win while using old melee units because neither the AI nor the player can successfully use flanking tactics.

Any APM sperg can outmicro you with cavalry anyway, which is terribly frustrating. Stuff Medieval 2 did right was make mosquito tactics ineffective.

You can and SHOULD use pause in Shogun 2. It's amazing when you plan and move units directly and activate stuff right during pause. Combat without pausing doesn't feel right in Shogun 2.

Problem is multiplayer. With the fucktarded AI multi is generally the better option. But then it becomes a micro fest instead of being about strategy.

  5. Honestly, I don't get you, how is this different from original Rome multiplayer?

Medieval sure is a great game and I agree that pacing is completely different but, imo, Rome and Shogun 2 did archery and troop morale under charge very very right.

The speed at which melee resolves and the movement was increased in Shogun 2. Made Empire and Napoleon fairly stupid too but the worse is fall of the samurai where melee blob strike and mosquito tactics will destroy any army, AI or player.

  7. But that's a good thing. If you're suffering from mosquito tactics, it means you're probably too spread out for your own good. Especially in multplayer.

Have the decency to tag or quote, you douche! :x

No you use them to break formations because you out micro the player not because of any tactical sense or the other player is too spread out. Then you just charge with a blob in one flank and from there on he wont have the time to position so you just melee rush him from the line angle. Even if he does shooting you will be awkward from the new position he has plus you fighting his soldiers. As long as you have more cav than him you can even pick whichever alternate line he has.

I dont use quote when we are one after another.

  10. Sounds to me that you just bad, rex

You shouldn't turtle in Shogun 2. It's that simple. Offense is the best defense.

It isn't about what tactic work best in the game. It is about bad design and stupid unrealistic combat.

  14. I've only played Rome: TW, Medieval 2: TW and now Shogun 2, so my experience is rather limited, but...

Can you explain in detail what exactly is unrealistic and stupid about Shogun 2's combat?

Melee is fast because every unit is offensive and not very durable, a charge can completely rek you but also a firing line can completely rek the charge, cavalry is important and dangerous but also much more vulnerable as virtually every unit is good against it. There are counters for everything as usual

In Medieval you could only rout enemy by a well timed heavy cavalry charge. In fact, most combat boiled down to tying up melee units with your melee units and then charging from flanks. Here, much like in Rome, morale plays a much bigger role and yea, you can rek enemy flank by an infantry charge but careful positioning of reserves can help you out with that. Honestly, I just completely don't get your complaints, guys ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I already explained my own to you, it has to do with total war not being about APM. If you want your micro heavy experience this shouldn't be the franchise to look for, yet it's turning that way because E sport is teh cool shit.

I don't want to battle with my mouse and keyboard to deal with someone's moskito tactics while I don't have the time to properly recalculate the optimal positioning that would make my gun units not completely useless. That's just not fun.

  16. I still can't wrap my head around your argument, rex.

Like.. I'm trying not to shitpost, trying to get where you're coming from but.. This is a real time strategy we're talking about... against a player... You planned your perfect formation and it gets ruined by mosquito tactics? So what? That's like the point of mutliplayer, no? trying different tactics and approaches against different players?

As far as APM goes, TW still isn't really about it since units take time to react to orders and high APM doesn't really help. How does high APM matter when units take forever to turn around or break combat? Microing several units at the time is much more important and that's exactly what TW was about since the start.

Good that you aren't mad. I mean that's awesome. Total War is going your way of being a click frenzy fast paced reaction time RTS completely disconnected from whatever small amount of battle reality it tried to emulate at first.

Line infantry fire? Who does that lol.

It bothers me when people think that any strategy game that is played in real time (and thus technically an RTS) belongs in the same subgenre as your company of heroes' or warcrafts. Europa Universalis is real-time strategy with the ability to pause in SP just like total war but no one would ever suggest that EU5 adding a bunch of cool-down click-to-use abilities amidst a bunch of other inane micro crap was par for the course or expected because 'EU games have always been RTS'.

Personally, and I don't think I'm alone in thinking this, I think that the pace and feel of total war battles has been going downhill starting with R:TW. Having said that, the click to use abilities and other popamole crap introduced in the more recent games was where I lost all hope for what was one of my favorite strategy franchises.

Actually I was thinking you talked about Rome2. Don't remember as well about the Shogun combat at this moment. But yes, armies moves to fast and battles is over in a moment. Without pause it is mostly just frustrating and I did play one campaign without that in Shogun2. Basically it was all about positioning and you preffered melee units and defending battles then. If battle was a little bit slower then you could react well to situations. Sometimes I even went into controlling just one unit while the rest stood in a defensive line.

Basically (seeing your other posts) you talk about different tactics, but a Shogun2 actually is worse in this aspect. It is about reaction, not about planning or tactics. With pause I used much more tactics than without.

Units are also too fast relative to fire rate and range as well. Way too easy as I've explained to completely invalidate an enemy's ranged, especially line guns.

Then artillery on the other hand is stupidly slow, which makes it only really useful in pure defense. Repositioning them is just asking to be bombed without counter, or be rushed before they can be of any use. Terrain barely matters too for canons unless you're right on a big slope.

The First Medieval was still the high water mark of this series. It's been downhill ever since.

They seem to focus on the most annoying 8e additions in their previews. First Demigryph Knights, now the Luminark of Hysh.

They'll publish a battle walkthrough video tomorrow.
