Implying that Rome: TW was great without a shiton of modding.

I'm gonna love watching 50 Greatswords standing still in a circle around a giant spider while it eats them one by one, fantastic stuff.

Is it me or does the game (graphics wise) look worse than Rome 2?

I hate that the majority of the troops not in a fight still stand around doing nothing. It looks so unrealistic. Muh immersion. It's probably still Warscape to blame where engagements aren't really individual but just visualize the calculations done on the units.

By now that's a staple of the series. Anyway, while I'd love to get excited I'm tired of the formula. What a 'quest battle' also points towards is even more railroading on the campaign map. Really wish some other dev would take up this kind of game. CA has had the throne for themselves for much too long.

Apart from the unit models, it doesn't look very promising. Warhammer seems to suffer from the same problems as every other game on the Warscape engine. Cavalry still doesn't seem to have any punch, infantry just stands there doing jack shit while a few individuals do a carefully choreographed dance, shit looks stupid as fuck.

The last game in the series which I played extensively was M2TW – especially the Broken Crescent Mod, so it might of course be rose colored glasses when I don't remember it being that bad back then. But from what I read, many of those "ideal" problems started with Warscape / Empire.

But at least you can FPS goblin doom divers, that should be fun, even though unnecessary, because there's already an app for that.

Much worse thing is that majority of the troops in fight won't do shit neither thanks to glorious Warscape engine; this is why Warhammer for MTW2 is such superb game to this pos.

Same bland shit as Rome II. Blood DLC, Magic DLC, Tactics DLC, AI DLC, bug fixing DLC.
Yet the game already have one thing that I like - background music.

First impression: oh no, it's the same old shitty engine.

But fuck, this is what the franchise needed. More diverse factions, more fun gameplay. Steam tanks, ginat spiders, magic, aerial combat... D1P. I just hope they'll improve cavalry charges.

Warscape engine is a piece of shit with its choreographed duels, it messes up the whole melee mechanics.

It really does, and the fact that units aren't really solid messes up stuff even more. I believe there is an youtube video about it, but I don't remember the title

I've got to say that I'm quite impressed with the video. Digging the variety of fantasy units. The graphics don't look that good, I think. Also, I'm afraid, that just like the other TW games I've played, combat will quickly become boring slugfest and I'll end up resorting to auto-resolve by the end of the campaign. (The game will feature campaign right?)

I fucking hated it when I played Empire, it fucked up everything. The point where I really noticed it was during a rout, where I chased down fleeing enemies... and rather than just riding alongside them slashing their swords left and right, my cavalry killed each individual soldier with a fancy kill animation. Then I zoomed in to infantry fighting in melee and it was even worse. Everything was an animated duel, there weren't any soldiers to be seen just normally using their weapons. Every strike and block was a coordinated animation, and once an animation started those two soldiers would be locked to each other.

Rome and Medieval 2 had such simple and working animations: several striking animations that could be broken by a block, which was also a normal blocking animation. Medieval 2 had some more elaborate finishing moves, but in Empire melee combat consisted ONLY of such animations. In Medieval 2 you could still have three guys ganging up on one guy, formations at least halfway kept their cohesion rather than everything falling apart into 100 duels, also there was the cool thing of armoured soldiers that had been hit but not killed getting a bloody texture over their armour. In Empire, every hit was an automatic kill because of those damn animations. Which made it look like armour, which some units had, was useless because I could never see a strike being blocked by armour. It was all just a handful of animations that always played out the same.

This reliance on having cool-looking animated duels really ruined the mechanics of melee combat in the newer TW games. They should go back to Medieval 2 system of mostly having generic hit/block/dodge and the occasional cool finishing move, rather than having EVERYTHING be a cool move inspired by the slowmo scenes of 300.

I agree, but I doubt they would go back to that after the success of Shogun 2.
If they removed it, the retarded TW fans that only started playing when shogun 2 released would cry decline, because to them the cinematic crazy animations are worth more than actual gameplay

Does anyone actually think so? I always thought the TW fanbase was better than that.

More likely I think is that the new engine simply doesn't support it and even CA knows that they are too incompetent to properly rewrite an engine and get a working game out this decade.
