This is actually an interesting problem - showing off the gameplay of an isometric cRPG in video. IMO, the best video about one was the T:ToN story trailer and they really relied on cutscenes and other bells and whistles.

How about the T:ToN interactive quest trailer? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfp4Lqdsx84

Sure - this is alright, basically, but wouldn't necessarily work for us, either. That has a lot to do with how our dialogues branch. I mean, it is doable, but we can't spend time on it right now - it would be at least a week of work to record it, do the explanatory/entertaining voice-overs and package the whole thing for the world's most democratic audience ever - that is the Internet.

Like with a lot of these marketing things, we'd rather keep chipping away at the game itself than go on a tangent trying to satiate the hunger of unsatiable screen-addicts - those that demand moving pictures the loudest and give the shittiest feedback.

Now, those of you who'd really like to give your good two cents - don't go and get all offended. We're not running a writer's retreat on a Mediterranian island somewhere just off the coast of Greece. We're preparing for a revolution :salute:

A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I found it a bit strange that the PC's partner addresses him as "Art-Cop" in conversation :) Pretty intrigued to play this though.
I also found it somewhat contrived that he should call the PC 'Art-Cop'. Sounded awkward. Can't you pinpoint this artistic inclination by some other means, like letting him have/obtain a nickname or something?

EDIT:
Supposed the pc is a fascist - would his colleague then call him fascist cop?

I think i'd use something like Benito, if it was to reflect how real people mock each other.

There were a few hints in the video - the fact that Kim calls you Art Cop is one of them - and this is not your first time to gush over something as removed from your serious investigations like a wall. "Art Cop" is a title you've earned. And if you think that we're really going to pull a Bethesda's Fallout with titles and factions like simply naming you "Fascist Cop" and "Feminist Cop" then... I don't know man. Kim is really upset with you. He is ridiculing you.

Thanks! I think I understood that he's being sarcastic, but the point is, it just sounded a bit off as a way to mock someone - and that's why my complaint and the subsequent example. To put it in another way: Say you have a friend who is always going into tirades about the benefits of a fascistic society (your regular Codexer, if you like) - I think you'd ridicule him by calling him Benito or something, rather than dubbing him Fascist Cop.

I wouldn't assume you'll go the Bethesday way, but your gameplay sample doesn't illuminate how the reputation is shown in-game either, I'd say. +M

Well, it looks great but I have to agree that from a marketing perspective this was 100% the wrong clip to show.
I think it was nicely in contrast with all the BOING! BAP! DERP! games that preceded it.

This is actually an interesting problem - showing off the gameplay of an isometric cRPG in video. IMO, the best video about one was the T:ToN story trailer and they really relied on cutscenes and other bells and whistles. The new X-COMs started using "cinematic shots" to amp up the visual appeal, that works fine in a trailer, but really sucks while you´re playing the game.

Would you have preferred clips where I looted a container, then opened up inventory to equip some shoes I found in a dumpster? This is already a given when it comes to role playing games - yeah, you can play dress-up. What else is left? Agrily zoom in and out of scenes where the characters do some special animations? That´s all a lot of man hours we should be putting into developing the game - we are not a big-ish team of 50 men and women strong...

If you have ideas, shoot!

Edit: I looked over some other trailers once more - and it really is just cameras zooming and zipping wildly, characters doing combat animations (zomg, all those colourful spell effects!) or running as the camera zooms in or zooms out - it is like flipping the pages of a book in front of a camera to give you a taste of the book's pacing. It is not really indicative of actual gameplay. Actual gameplay is really about taking your time to explore. It is about looking at the world at your own pace and flicking between the various menus like journal/inventory/thought cabinet at leisure. You either read the dialogues or you power through them to get your "Updated my Journal" voice over and little icon to move along.

I don't know about mass commercial appeal but I found this trailer immensely refreshing and releasing. To be faced with something that prompts you to think of game events and mechanics on an abstract and conceptual level rather than purely traditional mechanics filled me with joy and wonder.

Will definitely give this a try if they make a demo off it (or will torrent-demo it myself). And as usual, if it's even half good, i'll buy it.

I do have to say however that i'm getting a good number of warning bells here:
- First time making a game dev team that lacks any humility whatsoever? Check
- Manboons well above their juvenile years still incensed with 'revolutions', 'freedom' and pseudo-existential leftie-derivative angst? Check
- Dev team evincing a deep belief in their knowing better/being capable of doing better than anyone having come before them? Check
- Euro-trash Be different, be edgy and different small European dev team? Check

Will be glad to be proved wrong (though with commies and their ideas, i fucking doubt that). Sure as hell see nothing to be hyped about however, just promises.
(and should there already be an announcement in regard to the demo, my apologies, missed it)
Good luck.

Wait, am I to understand this game has zero combat?

EDIT: I'm 100% serious. I read the preview, but it never specified...

It has combat but it is all done through a menu, you don't get to move your little guys on a battlefield and stuff.

Thanks. That's like the best part though...but I guess it IS a storytard game. Makes sense.

The only things we have until know is a refreshing art direction and interesting concepts about dialogue systems. The trailer is bare bones in gameplay terms. I really hope they implement some kind of resource management, or at least invest heavily on strategic interactive events. Otherwise, it would be an adventure game, not a cRPG.

Why do you lie? :(

Everything, including combat, happens through the dialogue interface.

Combat through dialogue isn’t without precedent, Kurvitz points out – Planescape: Torment had that bit in the Mortuary where you could break someone’s neck if your Dexterity was high enough, followed by a trip to that game’s mind cabinet if you passed a Wisdom check. Combat through the Feld will let ZA/UM sidestep a lot of the time-consuming polishing, balancing, and tuning that a tactical combat system would need. This isn’t a figurine game: it’s a tabletop RPG with narrated combat, transcribed onto a computer, stats, abilities, die-rolls, and all.

This is not necessarily accurate either - the "little guys" move around and do things all the same, but instead of pointing and clicking you can use the keyboard to choose their actions or lines (numpad, hey!) The idea is to control the flow of a conflict situation on both sides and to instill actual meaning to actions taken (or avoided). If you look at our screenshots of dialogues (I popped one between some spoiler tags below), you´ll see that we use screen real estate wisely and text takes up only a portion of your screen. That way it is easier to read and allows you to see clearly what the characters are up to.

Horizontal reading might have made sense with the monitors and resolutions of the bygone Baldur´s Gate era, but with the humongous screens of our day - that is very impractical. Alas, if reading didn´t make you want to scratch your eyes out and give you neck pain, I´m sure more of you will eventually secede to the storytard side!

Devs went into more details how it will work in this topic I think. You can look it up. It will feel a bit like PnP but instead of descriptions what happens after each roll they will have cool animations and stuff.

That tells me exactly what? I had to assume it was some kind of narrative "combat", which is why I asked ITT to clarify.

After playing an unhealthy amount of shitty RPGmaker porn games, I can safely say that no combat is better than shit combat as long as other aspects of the game make up for it.

In all the recent RPGs I've played where story is relevant in the least bit - combat is merely a timesink. Tyranny was a good example, I think. It helps devs pace map exploration and gives players easy and predictable goodies.

I'm playing T:ToN right now and without getting into details - I guess I'll pipe in in the appropriate thread at some point - I'm saddened by a very formulaic narrative and plot. I mean - you can almost see the latticework under the verbose plaster! I was reading some Mieville on the bus to work this morning and the prose and the mystery are simply incomparable.

Something to watch out for as we power through our development. We must keep the player curious and interested. It's all subjective to a degree, of course...

I was reading some Mieville on the bus

He is active in left-wing politics in the UK and has previously been a member of the International Socialist Organization (US), and the short-lived International Socialist Network. He was formerly a member of the Socialist Workers Party and in 2013 became a founding member of Left Unity.[1] He stood for Regent's Park and Kensington North for the Socialist Alliance in the 2001 UK General election, gaining 1.2% of votes cast. He published his PhD thesis on Marxism and international law as a book.

ah yes
Funnily enough that's a coincidence. I was also thinking about it today.

(Reading recommendation: I really dig his "City and the City", a strange cop mystery)

The fact that you're recommeding Mieville's "City and the City" hypes me up even more for No Truce. Loved that book.

Personally, my skepticism over this game and its scope is currently outweighing my anticipation for it, but just the concept of a truly worthy spiritual successor (hate that term) to PS:T -- or, more accurately, to PS:T's own 'spirit' -- shall keep my interest piqued in Furies until it's fully realized. And then we shall see.

We need something new and fresh and funky in RPG's. It's been way too long.

Good luck to ZA/UM.
