Semi-related factoid: Feminists are well known for claiming to champion LGBT causes, yet very often refuse to allow transgender women into feminist "safe spaces" because they were born male.

I never understood the need to have a bunch of party romances in these games. Its wierd to look at your entire party as potential sexual conquests. It might be better if you could initiate romances with other npcs though (some tavern wench, or a noblewoman, etc). That way those of us who don't like that sorta thing can completely ignore it.

The IE folks do love their romances though. Theres a ton of BG2 mods just made for romancing everyone from halflings to Imoen (your sister).

 

At least we can trust MCA, Sawyer and Ziets that they won't do Bioware-romances.

Romances are the future of the RPG experience. Players want freedom of choice — and that means the freedom to dispassionately choose their electronic fuckbuddy from among a variety of omnisexual partners, based almost entirely on shallow criteria such as the character's physical appearance or voice actor. Having chosen their fuckbuddy, they will offer gifts of material wealth and select fanfiction-caliber romantic dialog responses. After all this hard work, they're rewarded with a robotic, disinterested and heavily censored/implied sex scene of some kind featuring the (implied) missionary position or its equivalent.

That's depth and characterization which also celebrates and respects the shit out of LGBT awareness and the kinds of features desired by female gamers. Progress, my friends.

 

Out of the three, Sawyer has expressed the most contempt for Bioware-style romances. Just sayin'.

Yeah, romances in games is really an interesting phenomenon. You hear people claiming they literally won't play a game they can't romance in. If someone had said 12 years ago the future of RPGs is romance, I would have never believed them, but now it appears to be as important as point and click character movement.

 

Why not? Your party can adventure through the land spreading magical venereal disease from kingdom to kingdom. That still sounds better to me than a bunch of crappy party romances.

 

What has Sawyer done with romance? He did mention NWN2OC, though in that case Ziets has done MOTB, and even in NWN2 the romances were thanksfully low-key.

 

Sawyer defended OE's decision not to have NWN2OC filled with all sorts of romances. Biodrones were especially disappointed that you can't cure Neeshka of her trust issues through PC's magical dick.

 

And yet they put there a 'romance' with Elanee, the creepy, asexual stalker o_O
