i see a somewhat happy snake in that... but yeah... grumpy robot works, too

i like the duty officer system... a bit like learning skills in EVE over time, but more of a source of income in STO, eventhough you do get more than deuterium and credits that way

if it wasn't for all the bugs, i'd say STO is a good game... but empty battlegrounds, inability to join battles for no reason, inability to enter a system from time to time without maneuvering around the entry spot a lot, missions that don't register as completed and have to be repeated and equipment items that don't swap on your toon and only get removed when you change to a ground zone (imagine suddenly having no personal shield anymore)... all those things are dragging it down (also: being able to single handedly kill hundreds upon hundreds of enemies... but i guess that's the new action star trek style... which i hate tbh)

Weird, I been farming the Borg Salvage PvP (it would be if the Klingons would show up) one for Dilithum and did the Gorn Mines one twice (that one is PvE I think).

I know the Borg Invasion of Sirius is bugged as the Borg dont show up and its a automatic failure, managed to got myself into the Eta one twice and got teamed up with some Klingons that were strong enough to make V'Ger to show up (but not to beat it, he was way too strong for so few players).

It's funny, the first couple days I played there were Borg cubes everywhere in the Sirius. Now that I actually want to tangle with them (with ad hoc teams of course) they're never around. Heh.

So the Distress Calls actually work in Eta?

I actually pre-ordered the Digital Deluxe Edition on Steam during a moment of madness. That got me into the beta, and wow, what a terrible game it was. Luckily, because it was still before release, I got the game refunded and ended up not having to pay a penny.

I've heard it has had a lot of fixes and updates since launch which have made the game better, and now it is F2P I might give it another go. Running out of HDD space though so it'll have to wait.

Well apparently can happen in most sectors blocks, I was sure I got it in Eta but the STO wiki article says its does not happen there ... I must have confused it with Pi Canis since I just finishing exploring Psi Velorum when one of the Red Alerts happened.

The purpose to do then is getting the experience multiplier and the accolates, the V'Ger is just a huge pain in the ass to deal with because of its regenerative probes, the massive Plasma bolt and the time limit, really not worth it.

Also managed to level to Commander and I am trying to pick a ship ... I did OK with my Cruiser but I noticed Cruiser combat just bogs down to broadside, broadside and broadside and the Heavies are all 4 nacelles (except the Excelsior but that one costs points) and I have to rule out the Science ones since they really look like Science ships, might go Tactical since I screwed up and had 2 Tactical officers on my Cruiser (and so had a unmanned console because of limits).

Too bad its when we made Captain we can pick either Enterprise-E, Defiant and Voyager ... there are really no wrong choices there.

By the way if anyone who is interested in this but hasn't tried it yet is still reading, the quote I posted earlier about ships taking forever to get is basically bullshit. You do get dilithium slowly, and it would take forever to turn it in to a good pile of c-points, but since you get a new ship basically every new rank, and can buy a fair number of the ships for dilithium straight up it doesn't really matter. Probably the most generous free to play MMO I've tried, the things they try to sell you are mostly cosmetic. No reason not to try the game if you're at all interested.

Yes, we can farm dilithium and since there is a cap to how much you can refine it per day that is very much the bottleneck, after a while you get enough daily/repeatable missions/events that award it so you can start to stockpile it.

The game is playable in f2p, there is no "You Must be Gold Member to play this!" as there are certainly incentives to subscribe (Veterans Rewards) Silver members (f2Players) are not really locked out of anything.

Just hit commander, not sure what kinda ship I want. I sorta enjoyed my stupid all phaser build on my cruiser, and heavy escort might be good with that bonus weapon energy. And four engined ships are bullshit so heavy escort has two engines going for it. Heavy cruiser has 3 fore and 3 aft weapon slots though so I could have 3 phasers and just go full weapon energy. WHAT DO YOU BROS THINK?

I end up going Heavy Cruiser, if you go beam weapons you can broadside with all 6 of then.
With a escort you end up doing passes, go in all weapons blasting and then get out ... also I assume you have two engineers as Bridge Officers so if you go Escort or Science that means you have to dismiss one to open up space for the Bridge Officer you can use.

Also not really related but here is V'Ger

We actually won.

Went heavy cruiser. I christen thee the U.S.S. Superstalin, NCC-691488! Probably should've gone USS Stormfront but Superstalin has a nice ring to it. I'll get a picture up later I guess.

Mostly running the default commons, apart from moving over my consoles from the Weedlord and ripping out the torpedoes for more phasers. Did a few quick combat runs, certainly seems to take a good beating and phaser like a complete motherfucker. I'm gonna dick with it some more though, probably customize my bridge crew more. I've got some purples and blues waiting in the wings I'm considering replacing my whites I got from the tutorial, but I'm sorta fond of my familiar crew so I dunno. Sounds like the benefits of rarity for bridge officers is very slight anyway. Which maybe I'd be better off selling those purples for some better consoles or something.

Playing this less than I was initially, but I'm certainly still dicking with it and enjoying it. Kinda fun to constantly be sending duty officers off for minor rewards and occasionally going on a mission. Just discovered the daily quest to do 3 player made missions, and the player made missions to abuse that as fast as possible. I'll probably keep doing that, the rewards seem decent. I'm inclined to take the actual item reward instead of the dilithium since you need so god damn much dilithium to do much of anything.

Playing with a Heavy Escort is definitely different than with a Cruiser. The U.S.S. Aquila could run rings around the Helre, but at relative levels not even my Eng buffs make it all that durable. Still, with Photon and Disruptor Dual Beam Banks sandwiching a Photon Torpedo launcher in the front, and Tetryon/Photon Turrets in the back, anything that flies into my sights dies. And Fire at Will actually allowed me to take care of whole medium threat squadrons in a single burst. I'm just going to have to adjust my tactics around not having that much protection anymore.

I also like that I could design it to look like a sleeker version of my Light Cruiser, the Calnus.

I hit Lt. Commander yesterday and got a Cruiser for my Tac Captain. I found it odd that I couldn't add levels to the Lt. Commander skills until I got to level 11. The story missions are OK and they seem to advance levels pretty fast.

What is the best way to get Dilithium? It seems that 15000 is needed for the Commander ships and I would like to get that amount before I get there, even though that is a ways off. I have to admit that this isn't bad for a MMO and there seems to be aspects of the game that I haven't even touched yet. The tutorial missions for PvP are still sitting there but I think I am going to play the story for a while before I start going there.

Are Duty officers available in f2p? If so, how do you acquire/use them and what good do they do?

Lt. Commander Country_Gravy of the U.S.S. Pipelayer. (My starter ship was U.S.S. Bubblebutt, which is a much better name imo)

Who is going to start a RPG Codex Fleet?

you get a free ship with every promotion... just pick up the "ship requisition" token from the admiral at the sol space dock and you won't need dilitium

easiest way to get dilithium is through your duty officer missions... pick, staff, start, wait, cash in

PRC1M.jpg

this is the U.S.S. Serious Business... current position: in front of the DS9 wormhole... current status: hunting changelings, slaughtering cardassians... current captain: Rear Admiral (lower half) Fens

got a choice between a two engineer and a two scientist ship with this escort upgrade... the ships with two scientist stations look better (much... much better...), but the extra engineer seemed like the better investment

Figured out that I just needed to go to starfleet academy to get the duty officers. Talk about micro managing! You can get up to 100 and buy more slots? Seems out of control.

Luckily I got a red shirt upgrade:

You can assign some to be Active Officers that give you passive bonuses and procs in space and ground combat, it seems.
