Appeal is back and they're planning on having another go at an Outcast reboot. More news to come.

Dear friends,

In December 2015, Yves Grolet and the founders of Fresh3D, the three original Outcast authors and IP owners, fulfilled a long lasting dream and managed to recreate APPEAL as a studio.

Yann, Franck and Yves would also like to let you know that the studio is ramping up and is hard working on the reboot of Outcast. We will be able to give you more news in the beginning of 2016.
In the mean time, stay tuned and may the Yods be silent !

Happy holidays adelphians !

You mean, like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, A Good Day to Die Hard, Rambo: Last Blood, and Star Wars: the Force Awakens. Yes, the movie industry would never trot out old duffers and reunite them for a new film.

Press Release
Bigben announces they have signed a licence agreement with the studio Appeal to publish the remake of the cult video game OUTCAST

Lesquin, May 26, 2016 - Bigben, the video game publisher and distributor, is pleased to announce that they have signed a licence agreement with the studio Appeal to publish the video game OUTCAST - Second Contact, a remake of the cult PC game Outcast.

Released on PC in 1999, Outcast is an action-adventure game that has been recognized as one of the first open-world video games. Outcast has been hailed by critics and received numerous awards for the quality of its graphics and innovative gameplay, and remains a milestone in the history of video games.

This expanded and updated version of the 1999 game, currently being developed by the team behind the franchise, will be released at the start of 2017 under the name OUTCAST - Second Contact.

"Outcast succeeded beyond our hopes and we take great pride in seeing that it remains a classic for many players today." stated Yves Grolet, co-founder of APPEAL. "We're now using the same team and passion to work on the remake that fans have been demanding for years. Our objective is to show just how modern the game is with cutting-edge graphics and improved gameplay, while retaining the charm of the original which won over so many players."
"Outcast is a cult classic that is part of the video game repertory," added Alain Falc, CEO of Bigben. "I am delighted that APPEAL came to Bigben and have the faith in us to supervise the evolution of such a popular franchise, which people will enjoy discovering or rediscovering on next-gen consoles," he concluded.

***

Outcast takes place in the near future when Humanity has just discovered the existence of a parallel world, Adelpha. The American government, which was behind the discovery, sends a probe there to investigate. The experiment is a success but a native of Adelpha, a Talan, attacks the probe and causes a distortion of space-time that threatens to destroy the Earth.

You are Cutter Slade, a former Special Forces operative, assigned to escort a group of scientists sent to locate and repair the probe. Nothing goes as planned, however, and you find yourself embarked on an adventure on an unknown planet, with the future of two worlds in your hands.

Outcast is probably the best game I never played. I mean, I played it a little when I was twelve years old or something but nothing more than that. Don't know why. It had very impressive graphics for the time and some interesting ideas, but I guess that wasn't enough for me to properly invest in it. It is available on GOG, though, so I will undoubtedly play it sometime down the line. There are too many good games out there which passed me by and I'm still trying to catch up.

As for this remake thing: maybe it'll be good, maybe it'll be shite. In any event, I'll probably never play it. One thing I like about going back and playing older games is that they do have dated graphics and such. They're part of their own time, a time which I like to revisit every so often.

Is it Cutter Slade? I think it's a new protagonist.
(I don't like his hipster appearance too).

Edited: oh, it's remake. I see... Second Contact subtitle is kinda misleading.

Outcast: Second Contact is currently shown at the Gaymescom. Journalist called it's look "not ugly" for a game made by a 12 man team and a limited budget. Which is just a polite way of saying it will tank on consoles unless they sell it for 15 bucks at best.

Doesn't matter, I have so many happy memories about that game I am gonna play it no matter what. Tried to play the updated version a while ago, but... I was weak. It still looked and ran so bad on modern toasters.
But looking like a xbawx threeshitty game should be enough to keep me going. :salute:

If you're talking about 1.1 version, it worked well enough for me on higher resolutions. Game's locales are still great looking and as atmospheric as ever.

Maybe. I just remember the higher resolution didn't do much, plus everything looked like it was animated in slow motion (tho I think that was always the case). I still got my share of happy nostalgia from doing the first few areas, but it just lacked the awe inspiration it gave me when I played it the first time to keep me going all the way.

I am not a graphics whore, F:NV looked "good enough" to keep me going at least seven times, but even I draw a line when NPCs faces are just a blurry mess. I don't think I would be able to play vanilla Morrowind again now either, regardless of it's... "depth".

Some games just don't age well, better live with those romanticised memories.

So what are the plans for the music? Are they just going to reuse the original tracks? I think it's pretty clear they'll never be able to create original music of the same standard

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy Codex Year of the Donut Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Have they just layered a new graphics engine over the old game somehow? The movement and everything else look so similar to the original game.
