Game DNA
When Paradox Interactive develops and publishes games we look at a number of factors, ”the Game DNA”, which we believe is crucial for success. The games must have certain characteristics and bring value to Paradox, the players and the developers.
Revenue model
The majority of revenues in Paradox derive from game sales through agreements with digital distributors such as Steam, Appstore and Google Play. In these cases, the consumer payments flow via the distributor, who charges a share of the amount paid by the end user based on industry standards, before the transaction reaches Paradox.
Some sales are also generated on the Paradox website [Paradoxplaza.com], where Paradox instead receives the full amount paid by the consumer. In both cases, Paradox then pays royalties to the developer of the game.
Revenues from game sales can be divided into the following four categories:
One-time payment
The players make a one-time payment when they buy the game for the first time. In this purchase, a number of future upgrades of the game are normally included.
Add-ons
Add-ons include sales of additional content created for already released games. It may be things like new worlds, music, equipment or other upgrades that improve the game experience. In addition to this, Paradox offers related services such as sales of t-shirts, mugs and e-books. The idea behind all these additional products is to supplement and further enhance the gaming experience.
Expansion packs
Expansion packs include sales of new updated versions or extensions of an existing game. Since the games are digitally distributed, the revenue model is highly scalable as the additional cost of developing extra content usually is significantly lower than developing a completely new game.
Licenses
Licenses include licensing the rights of certain brands to third parties that develop new products for the brand.
Speaking of, any way we could get an expert codex opinion of what the best and main dlcs are for this?
Paradox Interactive Announces Grand Successes for Grand Strategy Titles
Sales Milestones Reached for Multiple Games, Free DLC Awarded to Europa Universalis IV Players
STOCKHOLM — June 21, 2016 — Paradox Interactive, a publisher and developer of grand strategy games, today announced that multiple titles from their recent catalogue have reached impressive new milestones for worldwide sales. Three games, all created by the publisher’s internal teams at Paradox Development Studio, have enjoyed highly successful launches and ongoing sales in recent weeks, thanks to Paradox’s dedicated community of players and their ongoing, long-term support for each game in their library.
Hearts of Iron IV, Paradox’s recently released World War II-themed grand strategy game, has sold over 200,000 copies worldwide in less than two weeks after its release, making it the publisher’s fastest-selling historical strategy game to date. Stellaris, the developer’s first sci-fi grand strategy title, has now sold over 500,000 copies worldwide in just over a month since its release in early May. Finally, Europa Universalis IV, Paradox’s iconic world-conquest grand strategy game, has now sold over 1 million copies worldwide, not including sales of expansions and other downloadable content (DLC) for the core game.
“PC gaming is thriving, and we're doing incredibly well in a market that is increasingly competitive" said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “Over the course of our company’s lifetime, we have remained dedicated to creating deep and challenging games for players who want experiences that will last for countless hours. The key to these successes – games that not only sell well at launch, but sell sustainably for years to come – is that we continue to provide ongoing support and development, and remain connected to our community to understand what our players want from their time with our games. The PC platform is ideal for keeping our games updated and supported, thanks to our ability to easily share updates and new expansions – and for our players to share their creative mods.”
To celebrate these milestones, Paradox is offering a new musical add-on for Europa Universalis IV to all players for free for a limited time. Starting today and lasting through July 4, 2016, the new DLC “Fredman’s Epistles” can be downloaded from Steam at no charge, adding a collection of traditional Swedish songs from the 18th century to the game’s soundtrack. The songs, arranged from original works by famed Swedish poet and songwriter Carl Michael Bellman, provide an authentic piece of Swedish culture to Europa Universalis IV, perfect for taking on the world as a Scandinavian superpower. Following the limited free release, Fredman’s Epistles will remain available for 1.99$ from digital retailers.
To further celebrate the one million Europa Universalis IV players the developers will host a special stream on June 21st, 15.00-18.00 CEST, where they will play the oldest available version of the game and talk about its’ development.

Paradox Interactive, a Stockholm-based publisher and developer of award-winning video games, today announced “PDX CON 2017,” an upcoming convention for their global community of fans and players, which will take place in Stockholm on May 13-14, 2017 at the historical Gamla Riksarkivet at Riddarholmen.
The convention, which has traditionally been restricted to media and developers only, will be open to the public for the first time in 2017. This gathering will feature hands-on gaming with Paradox’s titles, as well as direct interaction with the creators and developers from Paradox and their partner studios. Some of Paradox’s top personalities will lead seminars and panel discussions, sharing their insights into such topics as modding, the development process at Paradox, AI programming and much more.
Details on these events as well as other activities (including parties, special guests and speakers) will be revealed in coming months. Tickets for the convention are on sale now at www.paradoxplaza.com/pdxcon2017.
From Europa Universalis to Cities: Skylines to Stellaris and beyond, Paradox Interactive has expanded its benevolent empire since its founding in 1999. Now employing over 200 people, Paradox has best-selling brands developed both in-house and in cooperation with industry-leading partners.
“2016 has been the year where Paradox has really opened up to the world, and the new PDX CON is the next step in that journey,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “We’re opening the convention up so we can meet our biggest fans, share our new announcements with our players first, and see if they can beat me at Hearts of Iron IV! I’ll see you all in Stockholm!”
Limited Early bird tickets are now available at the Paradox Webshop, including two levels of admission with added bonuses for major Paradox fans. www.paradoxplaza.com/pdxcon2017/tickets
What is this new retardness on paradox forum? They deleted the cdkeys for their games and only way now to vist the modding forum is to sync your paradox account with steam.
Anyone knows what info they collect from steam? Do they save the account name?
Paradox Interactive is excited to throw the doors open to PDXCON for the first time!
Traditionally a press-only affair, this year we are opening the convention for both fans AND press, for a 3-day celebration of all things Paradox.
In order to celebrate the occasion we though to do something a little "different"...We present to you: The Legendary Split:
Already announced for the convention, which will take place in Stockholm over the 12th-14th of May, are a Cosplay competition, special guests from the modding community, a whole wealth of guest speakers, and there's plenty more to come!
Its always beeen an issue. Your game had two hundred years to accumulate troves of useless courtiers in every mudhole from Lisbon to Cathay. So after 200 years of playing, Crusader Kings 2 starts lagging for no reason at all. Game speed drops from great to shit all of a sudden.
Anyone else got this issue?
No third-party speakers apparently.
Btw, they'll announce new games at GDC (Feb. 27~), including a multiplayer focused RTS. Maybe they'll reveal Tyranny DLC there.
Finally a con where it would be perfectly fitting to dress as Hitler!
