I am slightly assured. It seems one of the writers got some good head there. Although his game history is not very impressive. Then again, he's writers. not gameplay.

 

Anyone that believes Dragon Age has "deep and nuanced characters" isn't to be trusted.

I let this sink in. I hope you enjoy your deep and nuanced, well written characters in modern RPG, also the fantastic rulesets in them. Fuck this guy, whoever wrote this peace of shit. BG still has better world building, maps, enemy encounters and most importantly rules than 90% of RPGs today. And let's not talk even about BG2 which puts almost everything to shame today.

 

Yep, we're now using quality engines in games like PoE.

 

The secret to writing deep and nuanced Dragon Age characters:
1. take a regular D&D style character
2. add one secret backstory (plus point if it is a dark past)
3. unlock that backstory to the player through the game
4. GOTY all years!

 

This one seems unlike many of the codex drones with copypasted opinions you can encounter on this forum.
Skimming through his review history gave me confidence in the game's writing quality!

 

Agreed. They're some of the most overrated RPGs in history.

Nolstalgia is a powerful drug though, and there's no reasoning with people hooked on it.

Name some recent RPG's better than the BG or IWD series. I can literally only think of UnderRail.

I have some spicy drama about one of the developers, but it's mostly based on hearsay. I'll sleep on it.

 

You guys are acting like characters in BG and characters in DAO were not written by almost same people. Why can one person praise BG but bash DAO and that is considered OK?
I don't know what games you played but DAO I played has very similar but a bit more complex characters than both BG games.
Combat on the other hand is crap in DAO.

The guy was not saying DAO has better companions than PST, hold your torches..

 

How to build the characters in Planescape Torment:

1. Get a DnD archetype (tiefling thief, succubus, fighter mage of a lost city, abused apprentice become elemental evoker....)
2. Define details for each of them in a theme (fathercon girl, suppressed slut in clerical garb, tortured leader over past failure, abused boy...)
3. Write each interaction lines very well.
4. profit!

See the difference from this format to the above? It's the writers, biatch!

 

Writers are biggest influence but your #1 i #2 are already more interesting and complex than what standard fantasy offers.

 

Where/why did the dev say that? I'm interested in this and Black Geyser because they kinda look like BG, so it's a weird claim to make.

 

14 classes plus 3 arch types per class plus prestige classes? That is fucking incline as hell.

 

Honestly if Pathfinder simply delivers well written standard fantasy characters, then it would still be a better game then Deadfire.

Jesus fucking christ shut the fuck up you complaining ass cunts, the game already looks better than near any isometric CPRG ever released. my god the endless bitching about graphics, not to mention that its often about shadows and shit is tiresome as hell.

Judging by their reviews, playtimes and groups they seem to be a hardcore incel gamer with a taste for hardcore adventure games and inclined rpg preferences (might be too incline for rpgcodex).
