Modern "crpgs" mate, you either go for the short-haired, not-a-dyke or the bi-racial, pansexual (bonus points if secretly trans) degenerate to virtue signal how progressive you are.

It's certainly weird info to put out there pre-release, "oh for two of our romances, you have to break them up or have a threesome with em to experience that content." That's a weird enough framing by itself never mind spoiling any surprise that setup might have elicited.

 

I bet that the corresponding rage in the Codex post-release would have been glorious. How mean to do this.

 

I agree they didn't need to go into detail about the love triangle/whatever, but in this day and age, it feels like some limited spoilage is a necessity. As soon as romance is mentioned in an RPG, players want to know who the options are, what their sexual preferences will be, and exactly how hard they should rage about underrepresentation.

If that were true then the game would resemble a harem anime, or something like The Witcher; banging your way across the realm collecting notches like playing cards, choosing between two sexy sorceresses, etc.

I'd like to say I am above romance in games, and I mostly am. But I really enjoyed having a virtual girlfriend in ME 1 and 3 with Ashley Williams. She is my pretend game girlfriend and I've never pretend cheated on her in any game, including ME 2, and never will unless someone makes a character as sensible and reasonable as she was. But, to this day, besides Scotchmo and Chisel, she is probably the only companion I ever liked in any game (and that was because they genuinely said funny shit). I hate ridiculous characters like Minsc, I don't mind low-key and subtle characters like the blond haired beard farmer guy in PoE. But most of them are written as zany and super-quirky-cute nonsensical characters by lowbrow sycophantic writers to specifically appeal to little kids.

 

Eder carries PoE, the games would be a lot less enjoyable without him.

She was in concept art showing companions in previous updates, but never mentioned. I'd assume it's a portrait for the PC and/or custom companions.

Yes, I'm in my 40s and talking about romances in niche rpg games on a site filled with teenage acne-ridden low-T basement virgins. Did this cross some sort of dork line with people who love having romances in games when I don't - but once did? I'm old, like dorky stuff, and don't mind admitting to it or talking about it when its applicable.

To admit to being even gayer than was previously imagined - I've never watched a lovemaking scene between my Shepard and Ashley, since I didn't want to dirty the true and pure love we had with filthy smut that objectified her. Their joining of bodies with physically expressed love was a private affair that no one has seen - not even me.

 

I prefer RPG romances skip the courtship phase and go straight into marriage and kids and they make the kids either part of the story or party members or something, and that the marriage-alliance plays into the story as well and isn't just a little side thing that happens. You know, like when JRPGs do it.
