I'm going to call bullshit on this one. They made her a lithe elf. Generally regarded as the epitome of feminine youth and beauty. Do you think it's a coincidence that the character isn't a half-orc, dwarf, or other burly and unsightly race? This is Aerie 2.0 with troubling undertones.

 

Whatever it is, it still is an abomination. Very hard to do right.

 

It's hard to do it right, true, but that goes for all kinds of art.

Most works of fiction are terrible. I mean, go to any bookstore of your choice and search for fantasy books, and see what you find. But "because magic" is undoubtedly one of the first signs that it's a bad work of fantasy. Any good work of fiction has to have a minimum of verisimilitude, and that comes from a universe with consistent rules and laws. If the answer to any question is "because magic," that's not much different from the terrible books of sci-fi where the answer is "because [inexplicable] science."

 

some like brandon sanderson do explain and even when he cant explain it, he does fit his magic into a certain consistent logic.

 

Sanderson doesn't just pull stuff out of his ass and say "because magic" though, he tends to do quite a good job establishing the rules and laying groundwork before any major plot problems, not just pull some miraculous solution out of his ass like the Flaz Gaz Heat Ray: https://amazingstories.com/2014/05/...ific-profligacy-r-lionel-fanthorpe-sf-author/

 

Yeah you can criticize Sanderson's books for whatever reason but establishing world and magical rule isn't one of them. His magic has fairly established rule and exceptions are usually set up before they are relevant to avoid some ass pull deus ex machina later.

This is exactly Aerie 2.0 because the same aspects were present with her as well.

 

Elfs suck because they live for 1000 years and the best they can achieve is a fucking tree house, bows and useless magic. Every time elf becomes something more than a dendrophile, they turn into evil asshole that want to rule or kill everything, yet for some reason they look down on every other race and don't mind backstabbing everyone for their own gain. Tolkien-esque elfs suck so much, turning them into flesh eating hive-mind worshippers makes them more likeable.

Being a bit more likeable doesn't help when they are in the Mariana Trench of likability.

Arcanum dwarves are more Scottish, not just the accents but also the mining and being a tech hotbed during the industrial revolution. The Scots also have similar stereotypes of being cheapskates as the Jews though I guess so there is that.

 

Not every sci-fi is hard sci-fi.

In fact most sci-fi out there isn't hard sci-fi, because making hard sci-fi is... hard. It's not easy to come up with a plausible idea that uses "our" reality (even if it happens in the future) and it's a challenge to tell it in an interesting fashion to people who treat books like [mindless] entertainment. Fantasy is much easier to do in comparison and that includes space fantasy as well.

This reminded me about an analysis someone made when pointing out why Eragon's fantasy world - presented in a book - was pure bullshit from logical standpoint. It was a really fun to read.

In actual mythology dwarfs(and elfs) are seen as malevolent earth spirits/creatures. They are small,greedy,deformed creatures that rape women and kill/eat/kidnap children/babies. It really makes you think how fantasy and D&D twisted the nature of those dark creatures. Hmmmm maybe all that shit about those people being satanists and shit,holds some truth in it.

 

What is that "actual" mythology you are talking about? As far I am aware, in the earliest ones they caused illnesses, not kidnappings and rapes.
