Dues Ex 2 swipes the show, at least according to the chaps over at PC.IGN in thier E3 Awards article. Here's a bit on why they picked it over Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Temple of Elemental Evil, and Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines. I'm pretty sure Golden Land was there as well, but PC.IGN didn't mention it. Okay, the rationale:

Now here was a difficult category to come to a consensus on. Troika's Vampire incorporates an innovative conversational system and a quite amazing graphics engine (Source), while Greyhawk, also from Troika, is a solid RPG to core. Of course, BioWare is never to be outdone in the genre it does best, so Knights, though still more of an Xbox game than a PC title, came in strong. Of course, in the end there can only be one and when the Invisible War erupted around us, we could not deny it.

Oh boy, where to even begin with this paragraph. If BioWare is never outdone, then why did they give this to Deus Ex 2? Obviously they were outdone in some way if they didn't get the award.

Also, I'm not sure the dialogue for Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines is innovative, it's just that Troika games strongly excels in that field. They definitely outdo BioWare there.

Sometimes when I read mainstream online gaming press I wonder why I even bother. They all gave NWN top score and all the awards it could carry - a game that is at best mediocre when it comes to gameplay, story, dialog, graphics, stabilty and God knows what.

Dammit, this poor site has seen one too many NWN-bashings, but can someone explain to me why NWN so COMPLETELY mesmerized the entire gaming press? I write "gaming press" because I have failed to find a single real world gamer I know that actually likes the game half as much as Baldur's Gate, Diablo or Dungeon Siege.

So, how did they do it?

Do you need to wonder about that when the nickname of the company is "BioWhore"?

Deary me. Its interesting that they comment on KOTOR's console leanings, when I've read previews that have levelled the exact same criticism at Invisible War (which is also on X-Box.) Its bewildering that, presented with a pure example of what role-play-gaming is in ToEE (assuming its good,) they've still chosen a hybrid game. Did Ivan "Gnary Dude Of Doom" Sulic write that? --- spoke too soon - he did!

In the X-Box awards, Fable won the RPG "prize."

IGN is like some fucking twilight zone without logic, common sense, or reason.

Innovative conversation system? Don't you mean "dialogues"? BioWare is never to be outdone in the genre it does best? Out of curiosity, what genre is that? DX2: looks better, runs better, "so technologically advanced it hurts" - all the good qualities people are looking for in a CRPG.

Deusex the most promising RPG? nah, from all the previews I've read the roleplaying is still based on choosing between the small gun and the big gun. they did away with the last vestiges of character development when they ditched the stat system in an effort to port it over to X-box. but this 'genre redefining' crossover crap seems to be the big thing nowdays what with Dungeon Siege and KOTOR... sadly very few crpg titles this year... :( there were like 50 MMORPGs though. still they mentioned TOEE at least as impressive.

good point, I knew there was a silver lining. :D I'm glad Troika is getting so much spotlight with TOEE and Vampire. I hope the publishing suits don't get carried away and try to make the devs compromise too much in the future with the crpg aspect of it, a lot of respect for these guys is riding on their ability (past and present) to make a deep crpg out of pretty much anything, IMHO. ooooh, I'm so tired of anticipating, somebody release something for us
