I guess time-units got the boot :(

Sure Fireaxis X-com was pretty fun, but it is so damn limiting compared. Hopefully he won't restrict it too much, but I'm afraid he will.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Bad choice.
Instead of doing Sci-fi stuff he could just go on on fantasy settings, considering that THERE IS NOT an Xcom like game in fantasy universe, while there are lot of mercenaries\soldiers\scifi stuff.

A fantasy Xcom like would be fresh.

Also, when the game will be released, Xcom 2 will be full of mods, Dlcs and expansions and maybe Xcom 3 announced, not the best spot for releasing a similar game

Again, bad choice going on Scifi
Do you want me to go bankrupt? I'm glad he stuck with aliens :)
There has been a fantasy XCOM btw!

Avenger=Castle

Commander=King

Bradford=Knight

Tygan=Alchemist

Shen=Blacksmith

Geoscape= Old paper world map

Alien invasion=Undead\Demons invasion

Yeah, i'm pretty sure i'll buy it but it's just a dream, every developers do 4x fantasy stuff, noone follow the Xcom path. Would be really fresh

Gollop had the chance..but he preferred to go with Scifi-Already boring-brown palette

PS: Massive Chalice has horribad art direction, it's so confusing that can be even scifi

How would you do progression in a fantasy xcom? In the scifi setting it fits well since you capture the alien weapons and research them, and technological progress is fast in the modern era. A little more tricky with fantasy, which mostly are static settings or progress over long time periods.

classic swords / magic development, capture demon souls for energy / crafting etc

there a lot fiction around this theme like rome empire with demon rulers and some human mage riots

Motherfucker!

Fantasy XCOM~ Such triggering words! I am investigating this right now~

EDIT: dat kotaku review is pretty good~ I am continueing triggered.

EDIT: dat steam guide is pretty gud~ It pointed out many delicious points that triggered me to try this game once my Bloodlines urge is past. HOwever, it also show why people might not like it, at first glance: FREAKING ugly female model. And no way to mod it. No wonder it's hard as hell to market it, even with "fantasy xcom" as a lure

EDIT: WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT!
:shunthenonbeliever:
massive chalice cant run on 32b windows xp.
No wonder nobody ever heard anything about this game.
They shoot themselves off at the knees.

Duh, you'd find scrolls and copy them into your spellbooks.

I hope there's more emphasis on character development and other rpg mechanics. xcom was fun, but all the dudes played the same way but with different stats.

In Zodiac Legion, the way we plan to do it is to have magic return to the world. I know it is a bit cliched, but it would be an easy way to have "tech" improvement in a short period of time.
The player would then send his heroes looking for artifacts and tomes of magic to help him unlock ancient magic arcane, and get new spells and enchanted equipment.
So basically, as it is a rediscovery, it allows us to change the "tech level" pretty fast.
The tecnology itself would of course be fixed, as it would make no sense otherwise, but with the improvement of magic crafting technique, a previously unaffordable high end suit of plate armor might become trivially easy to craft.

I hope there's more emphasis on character development and other rpg mechanics. xcom was fun, but all the dudes played the same way but with different stats.

Character development would be quite tricky, as we would also need a lot of characters to throw to the meat grinder, so we cannot do anything approaching any RPG when it comes to heroes development :
Even picking perks and raising stats for characters would become terribly boring with a casualty rate that would approach what it was in X-COM.

We plan to do it by having very little decisions to make during the first few levels, where characters are considered expendable, and many more lately.

Fantasy xcom? lol

I never really liked his game where you have simultaneous turns. I hope he makes somethign that's basically xcom remade, not some bizarre shit this time.

Originality not always is a good thing, expecially when there are few examples of the same genre out there

I think your looking for this game called 'Nu Xcom', it has lots of RPG skill tree stuff to 'level up' your guys.

Personally Im a big fan of the old style, redone in xenonauts were you dont have magical abilities and 'win button' skills, your guys just slowly get better at shooting and running etc.

As long as there is a great combat system, interesting and diverse weapons and enemies we dont need that shit in xcom style games.

I don't agree, characters don't need to be as complex as in proper RPG but something more than xcom 1994 would be welcome. And you can avoid nu Xcom problems of high level characters being so much more powerful by not letting them get so powerful skills but making sure the real power is in the items you make and spells you acquire and those would not be directly tied to character levels (although the rate of successful use of those would climb with character levels).

I prefere the nu X-com "rpg" soldiers, new abilities are fun and the guys feel more unique once powered, the downside of being too powerful in late could be avoided by introducing late game super difficult (with lot of crazy abilites) enemies

Come on guys, both approaches are fun in their own way.
The one is more realistic and cannon-foddery the other one creates more attachment and "story" creation.
But since we do have XCOM, I'd preffer Gollop to go with the old school approach in some way.
Xenonauts is nice and all but it is in the end a remake and not something "new"

The cannon fodder "total war" approach feels weird for a tactic-turnbased...almost any good tactic game had little crews, silent storm, ja2, you feel more involved in characters, maybe is a bit rpgey

Maybe in X com had sense beacause international earth agency with thousand of soldiers

Btw i hope the art for phoenix point will be good, i see too much brown post apocalyptic boring stuff

I prefer them forgetting that FiraXCOM exists since it's a simplistic piece of shit in every single way.

Next you'll say you prefer the two "action point" system because it makes you feel alive or something.

Next you'll say every title released after 2000 or from a medium-big budget developer is crap for the rest of your life, or something.

And to be honest, while Gollop was chilling with Nintendo Ds stuff and Assassin's creed craps, Firaxis at least managed to invest money in a pc turn based.

Now that they had success and he convinced himself that xcom like game can sell nowadays, he's trying to do what he should've done years and years ago

too late Julian, unless your game will be a masterpiece

True I like both old xcom and 'Firaxcom'. But really to capture the spirit of alien terror and overwhelming technology you have to have the cannon fodder method, at least for a good chunk of the game.

X-COM Apocalypse seems to be the mid-way, but too bad psi was useless and the game generally had some wonky mechanics.

Apocalypse is my favourite Xcom game (ok bring on the hate...)

I think it was hugely ambitious and probably had to many failed systems because of this. And some fairly odd design choices for the graphics, it works ok with the retro sci fi style for the buildings and human vehicles but the 'play dough' aliens were kind of terrible.

But what they were attempting to do was awsome. Its a shame game designers dont have the balls nowadays to try crazy stuff like this.

too late Julian, unless your game will be a masterpiece

So yea, this. He should have stuck to his guns and kept making the game he loves.
