Good lord, where did I say that? I said you can have an RPG with AND without it.

By calling them LARPers, I mean utterly ignorant in the topic at hand, and all those that keep spouting the 'C&C = RPG!!!!!' bullshit fully deserve to be called that. I like both dungeon crawlers and story-driven ones, but these folks apparently never played anything else other than Fallout or PS:T.

    PST was a so-so RPG.
Proof: RPG is a role playing game. PST was a so-so game due to lack of challenge and therefore a so-so RPG.
    Here, I said it.
It was also artsy-fartsy and childish, kind of like Crime and Punishment For Pretentious Teenagers.
Admittedly the role playing part of it was good.

Russian roulette is a game. You play the role of a man holding a gun in his hand , thus it's a role playing game.
Russian roulette is a great game due to the fact that it's very challenging, and therefore it's a great RPG.
    There, I said it.
It's also a very mature and gritty game, kind of like The Old Dark Tea-Time of the Soul for suicidal elderly women behind counters in small towns.
Admittedly the role playing part kinda sucks.

2/10 for the pretentious trolling attempt.

I am inclined to believe that this is Tyrax Lightning that has signed up to troll us, as an act of revenge.

Tyrax Lightning would have the cerebral capability to at least make his trolling name an anagram or a word-play of some sorts. So sadly Obongo is just random Biowhore/ESF'er.

It's not a vital mechanic in a sense that a game that has other defining features of a RPG is still a RPG without it.

However, it is a vital mechanic in a sense that it:

    a) increases player involvement and interactivity

    b) is a unique feature of RPGs (which is important, as unique features, that distinguish RPGs from other genres, like tactical games and adventure games, are the ones that define them)

    c) increases replayability

So, it is a unique feature of RPGs that enhances gameplay. Can we agree on that?

A conclusion that follows is that a RPG with C&C is better than a RPG without C&C, all other elements being the same. Hence, any RPG needs to be evaluated by quality of its C&C or lack thereof, as well as when other RPG features are concerned.

Hahaha, oh wow. RPGs are defined by C&C. At the very least, the choice of your race/class/stats/skills and consequences of picking them and not picking them.

    Go back to Escapist, polack.

"A conclusion that follows is that a RPG with C&C is better than a RPG without C&C, all other elements being the same."

And i don't really think anyone discussed, like, that thingie. If we add...

"It's not a vital mechanic in a sense that a game that has other defining features of a RPG is still a RPG without it."

We have that a game may be a role playing game even if it has, like, no choices and consequence. So, like, choices and consequences aren't an obligatory element of role playing games, so a game having or lacking choices and consequences doesn't made it a better or worse role playing game, while a game lacking a character development, and i mean that in a mechanical way and not a let's roleplay we are nice and cuddly, system isn't.

Storytelling-based choices and consequences thingies may be cool, but they aren't needed to be a role playing game. So, like, they aren't part of what makes a game a good role playing game. So, like, it follows the discussion we were having before about, like, Torment maybe being a good and unique game thingie, but not one of the best role playing games ever since, in comparison to what came before, all other elements were not, like, the same.

    Ninja edit: Nya!

Real edit: Ooopsies, i let the thingie about storytelling-based choices and consequences being unique to role playing games, sorry. Have you never played visual interactive novels? You should, because that kind of choice and consequence is not unique to role playing games, like, at all. Many genres have played with the idea of altering the plot via dialogue choices and, like, story events that prompted you to pick between, like, nya and meow.

When I hear C&C I don't think of the consequences of having increased STR last level up, I also don't think of the consequences of my weapon choices. Don't be silly EV.
C&C obv refers to story elements/quests/game world/npcs and so on.

    yes

yes, but it's only one of the unique features

yes but it is not required to provide replayability

largely yes, but it is not THE defining aspect of a RPG. It's the icing on the cake, exactly like a good story, multisolution quests etc.
The defining aspects of a RPG are character system and combat, if those suck the whole game will suck or be mediocre at best, no amount of C&C will change that.
If character system and combat are satisfactory or - ideally - excelent then C&C is of course preferable to no C&C. Exactly like a good story is preferable to a shitty one.

You should really look up earlier 'what's a RPG' discussions.
First of all, RPGs have their origin in tactical war games and in adventure games. So, they have many elements common to these types of games. Essential, defining elements, of any genre, including RPG, are the ones unique to the genre, that distinguish it from other genres, especially the ones they are similar to. Choices and consequences feature fits right into that category.

Any feature that significantly increases the player involvement, i.e. enhances gameplay and is an unique feature of a genre must be an element of evaluation of a game belonging to that genre.

    Anyway:

Yes (I've never argued otherwise), but it is one of a few defining aspects of a RPG.

They don't. I already mentioned a genre of games that is fully, completely based around nothing more than choices and consequences affecting the story. And, like, that genre has been doing it since way before Torment and Fallout brought the choices and consequences thingie in western role playing games to the spotlight and stuff.

And then you have, like, TWilight INSanity, a manic shooter thingie offering both storyline and gameplay consequences based on what options do you pick during dialogues with the bosses and between the characters, as well as how good your skills are. I mentioned other examples of manic shooters with meaningful choices and consequences in my first post in this thread.
