  1. Welcome to rpgcodex.net, a site dedicated to discussing computer based role-playing games in a free and open fashion. We're less strict than other forums, but please refer to the rules.

"This message is awaiting moderator approval": All new users must pass through our moderation queue before they will be able to post normally. Until your account has "passed" your posts will only be visible to yourself (and moderators) until they are approved. Give us a week to get around to approving / deleting / ignoring your mundane opinion on crap before hassling us about it. Once you have passed the moderation period (think of it as a test), you will be able to post normally, just like all the other retards.

When I first registered, I couldn't believe a website I always appreciated for its liberalism and freedom of opinion uses such a restriction for new users. I understand you're all cool and gang with each other and don't care about new users, but you must understand that old users can accompany a website to a certain point. They eventually die ( especially in Codex's case, since some people here are old ) or their interest moves on. After that, new ones should replace. It's a sad truth, but it can't be avoided. But right now, this feature is a big turn-off for any new user and prevents them to feel right at home. Therefore prevents them to stay longer. Yes, the posts get approved fast. Yes, the duration is not very long. But still, it's very annoying. I know there are trouble makers. But as far as I know, there is always at least one moderator online who can make short work of the urchin very fast. Also this feature won't help very much if someone really intends to make trouble. Since they can come along until they get totally approved and start to make trouble. Internet trolls are armed with the weapon of patience lately. I went through this, but since I am caring, I don't want other people to suffer the same thing. So I'm making this request on their behalf.

You can also use this catchy and threatening slogan in the registration page instead to make the situation clear for new users.

We give you a chance, make it count/ you fuck it up, we'll nuke your account

So pretty please, with sugar on top, do something about it.

    It's 5 posts.

If someone desperately wants to get through the process quickly, it's really not hard for anyone with a functioning brain to shit out 5 acceptable posts in under 10 minutes. Do that, wait a short while for them all to be improved, and you never have to deal with it again. That really doesn't seem like a turn-off, except to someone with the attention span of a mayfly.

What it does do is make alt-spamming a little bit more inconvenient. Which is almost always a good thing.

I didn't know it was just 5 posts. The notification ( which you guys can't probably see ) says something about a week of moderation. I kinda wondered why I came out of it so fast, but I thought mods manually did it since I wasn't suspecious.
In that case, it's not very bad. But I still think it would have been if it didn't exist. Since it's not very effective and it's just a minor annoyance. ( Like a mosqito or whatever )

Always find it funny when new people join a forum and immediately have ideas on how to make it better.

We get about 5 or 6 new registrations a day, which is roughly the same as before we implemented the new system (compares to about 4 - 5 per day). The old system also had a proxy check which would capture a lot of false positives too. And also completely block entire continents from registering. :smug:

Not really. Once you're in, you're in. I don't think that prevents you from staying longer.

We've got better things to do than to be making short work of urchins though. Especially when that urchin can instantly register a new account and return to his previous behaviour (even with the proxy check).

A myth, mostly. True urchins can't manage it. They have to really work hard on those first five but then, once they're through, we can nuke them and they have to work really hard again. Trust me, there's been a lot of shit we've nuked right off the bat for shit posters that never got through. And then there are things like prosper and Andhaira, who've had almost 500 posts deleted by the system without them ever getting through. You take this system out and you would be wading through their shit everywhere. This way, they know that no matter how many accounts they make, we'll recognise their style and nuke it.

They will simply never get through. A ban threat is also much more serious now, because the user would have to work incredibly hard to disguise not just their IP address, but their posting style as well. It's something that's a lot harder than people realise. Especially for the shitposters who just can't help themselves.

A nuked account doesn't mean anything if you can simply re-register and keep posting though. Your shit then gets through, it gets responded to. For as potentially long as a few hours your shit sits around and gets the reaction they desire. This way, they don't get shit. They get one of the mods looking at their crap and choosing the "delete" option. Nothing gets through. No reaction and if they do try hard and get through, we nuke them.

And the key here is, as I said, they have to work awful hard to get through again. We already recognise a pattern of new accounts starting off by "posting nicely in certain forums" that we tag as potential shitposters to keep an eye on - which we can put in the system for a bit longer if we want, just to see if they really are genuine.

So far I think it's worked. The people who are really genuine don't mind that it takes a few days or whatever to get through. Those that don't care, well, do we really want them posting here anyway? I'd rather have a forum of quality posters who care a bit more than your average forum, as opposed to every piece of shit that wants to spurt two words. Yes, it's a quality thing anf I recognise there's an amount of "freedom of speech" that suffers. But that's freedom of speech, not freedom to gargle two words and a "lol".

Besides, why are you mad Chuck Norris?

oh come on.what the fuck. just because i can post more posts than the rest of you doesn't mean they are shit. most of them are good. i guarantee half of those 500 posts that are mine were good but were declined on the account of miserable shitcock moderators who DU trusts blindly. which is why he picked them. he felt he could trust them blindly. it doesn't prove they have a good record when they must hurt me so dearly. I could really fuck this site up. I make good posts but if you continue to decline them to support an evil system of approval i will simply bring down rpgcodex.

furthermore you must setup a pizza charity. pay me when my posts are inevitably decline. one dollar per declined post. I won't be aroudn forever if you keep this decline up. we are in over our head from moderator decline, that inexcusable and is abomination of visibility.

Keep it up. It's better to be jerk and responsive rather than nice and unresponsive. ( like Microsoft's support team )

BTW, I was Chuck Norris. But that was me in a disguise. This is my true form which is very different from my Chuck Norris form.
