if your favorite tb, rtwp,or rts tactical battle game is not listed, let me know and I'll add it. Obviously I can't list ALL the great tactics games, there's too many.

Voted for UFO: Enemy Unknown, but the fuck is wrong with that poll.
Includes Warcrafts and Starcrafts, but no Close Combats or Myths from RTT genre.
edit.
Or any games from that series Men of War belonged to.

Is this bait?
There are only 6 legitimate choices in all honesty, and that's generous.
That's mainly because you mix strategy games with tactics. (Since both are abstractions from what really happens that's only natural with lots grey area between them)
https://www.strategyskills.com/difference-strategy-tactics/

How are games where you move stacks of thousands of men (HoM, Ultimate General) squad level tactics games?
Why not include Total Wars if those two former series are ok?
WHERE THE HELL ARE STEEL PANTHERS?

I would put Steel Panthers but I can't put it above Panzer General and sequels, and vice versa

Strategy games are like Civ, EU 3, Vicky 2 or HoI. There is no "battlefield" "chess" map where martial conflicts are resolved by units and unit tactics. Builders and Tycoon games like City Skylines and KOEI games are also considered strategy games.

Also tactics games typically follow a linear progression of battles and maps, while a strategy game is typically non-linear.

Also I discounted games where you control literally hundreds of units like War in the East

So you left operational level games out of your squad level tactics games poll.

Strategy games are like Civ, EU 3 or HoI. There is no "battlefield" map where martial conflicts are resolved by units and unit tactics.
Then why not to include MoO(2), MoM, Eador or aforementioned Total Wars into poll? Those are obviously better games than some that were included.

Yes I was just thinking that both MoO and Stellaris would technically qualify but even though they have battle control those are clearly not the best features of the game. Also my impression was that Total War games are not terribly tactical. Also while I have not played most of them, just listening to 3ma I can tell there's a pretty huge variance between the great Total Wars and the rest.

I did forget Gettysburg though. That's shamefur.

Not sure what games I have on the poll that you are judging as inferior. Starcraft and Warcraft 3 are RTS landmarks. By Starcraft I'm including Brood War, obviously.

Starcraft and Warcraft 3 are RTS landmarks.
RTS (where you gather resources and build buildings/units) is different genre from squad based tactics. Besides you can get better than Blizzard or Microsoft stuff in there too.
RTT games for example Mechcommander, Close Combats or Ultimate Generals are the sort of games where in tactical level you just have combat units, no base building or resource gathering.
My fucking personal trigger when people mix those 2.

Jason's definition of strategy here seems to "no direct control of combat" while tactics means "having direct control of combat."

Yes originally I wasn't planning on putting RTS games on the poll because that's a shitty pandora's box but I had to include them to include rt games like Ultimate General, Shadow Tactics/ Commandos and Close Combat.

OTOH RTS games tend to support head 2 head play which for me is very important in tactics games. If a tactics game doesn't have stellar AI then it better have multiplayer.

Should fit just fine among people whose definition of RPGs is "muh choices and consequences".

I don't mind adding Total Wars or Close Combats but which titles from the series would you vote for? Shogun and Rome?

Until a game actually does large space battles in a good way let's just leave the space battle games out.

It's just a poll for fun guys. The fanbois are going to circlejerk JA2 to first place anyway.

Searching for my kidnapped sister
Hammer & Sickle where?

Silent Storm is a good choice for 6man party versus a big map, but some players just cant adjust to the introduction of human-sized tank, aka Panzerklein.
Hammer & Sickle remove that entirely so you got a Cold War gunporn game.

Jagged Alliance 2 is great, but if I have only one vote, it would be either Fallout Tactics over SS, SSS, or HS. One simply has to take graphic into consideration.

Imo, one of these: Jagged Alliance 2, Silent Storm, X-COM: UFO Defense, X-COM: Apocalypse (should be on that list, great game, my favourite entry in the series)

I voted ja2, because the set of characters is just so good, Ace

While i can't see why you put IWD 1 & 2 in there (because you played them ?), you're missing some of the best ones like :
  • Fantasy General (my bad, didn't see it in the list)
  • Heroes of Might & Magic V
  • King's Bounty reboot series
As a HoMM 2 fan, i replayed some HoMM V campaigns "recently" and it's very good.

Fantasy General, well, let's say if you didn't play it, you shouldn't be allowed to create a new thread in this sub-forum.

And the king's bounty reboot add a lot of tactical options to the HoMM recipe with the dragon/talking sword skills.

Well, i voted for UFO but really, FG is as much one of my favorite games of all times as HoMM2 was (HoMM2 didn't aged as well as FG though )
