CD Projekt Red has called an Extraordinary General Meeting later this month and the meeting schedule is suggesting that the developers behind The Witcher series might be preparing to fight off a hostile takeover.

According to the meeting schedule (via NeoGaf/RP.pl), CD Projekt Red is going to be addressing a number of things, including on what right shareholders have. According to a summary on the meeting schedule, there will be three votes during the meeting:

  1. Vote on whether or not to allow the company to buy back part of its own shares for 250 million PLN ($64 million)
  2. Vote on whether to merge CD Projekt Brands (fully owned subsidiary that holds trademarks to the Witcher and Cyberpunk games) into the holding company
  3. Vote on the change of the company's statue.
These votes suggest that CD Projekt Red might be preparing for a hostile takeover or be protecting themselves against one should it come

Share buyback is probably the most effective of the three options. But the other 2 seem kind of meh to me, but no telling what #3 is. What statute would it change?

My theory is that Cyberpunk would've been so great (and no DRM) that no more shitty AAA tittles would ever sell. AAA companies built a timemachine to take over CDPR to prevent Cyberpunk from ever being created.

I don't really get the impact of number 2. Would that affect anything tangible?

We’ve reached out to CD Projekt for comment and they provided the following statement.

"As for the rumor, it emerged after the Board suggested introducing a voting cap during the upcoming shareholder meeting. However, the proposal is not a reaction to any current events affecting CD PROJEKT. Rather, it is meant as insurance against future hypothetical scenarios which may never materialize. We wish to safeguard the interests of minority shareholders in a hypothetical case where a major shareholder emerges professing a business and strategic vision which conflicts with ours."

The Witcher 3 cost was ~ 70 mln $. They sold 10 mln copies. If they got 20 $ for one copy, they got 200 mln $ for all and earned ~ 130 mln.

That should explain why they are preparing against a hostile takeover.

Thank fucking christ. CDPR and Larian are the only 2 developers I really hold dear anymore. I can't even imagine the pain of a Cyberpunk 2077 being designed by outside interests rather than CDPR themselves

Meh, CDPR showed that they didn't have what it takes to improve or make good combat in Twitch3r, and that it was more important to them to create an open wuurl walking simulator for storyfags.
