Cutting right to the chase: the game installed and starts up fine, but as soon as I click on 'Start a new game', I get an error message saying that 'the program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down' and the game then exits. I know that the minimum system requirements include an 800mHz processor, and I only have a 550mHz processor, but I don't see how a slow processor can cause an illegal operation error. Anyone have any suggestions for me?

The causes of illegal operations are never easy to find. I'd suggest ensuring:
  • Your not running anything in the background.
That you have the most up to date drivers for all your hardware - eg Sound card, Video card.
I'm not sure if there are any patches out for POTC, but i'd suggest you check.

If none of those things work, try emailing Bethesda about it.
